Anyhow, definitely looks like Lauren Spencer-Smith has a good chance at #1 this week then, especially with her getting off to a really strong start on Amazon as well which is much harder to do than on other platforms. I can't say I'm that excited to hear the song if the Mimi Webb comparison is anything to go by but I remember 'drivers license' got pretty mixed reviews on BuzzJack when it first dropped too and I ended up loving that so shall not judge until I hear it x Interesting that this is two years in a row kicking off with a massive hit by a previously little known female singer (I know Olivia was more well-known than Lauren is but still both largely newcomers as far as mainstream music goes).

 

Vocals are somewhat in the vein of Mimi Webb and Gayle but better than both and the song is far stronger. Gets the 'Daddy Issues' meme into the chorus too! Nowhere near as good as Olivia though.

Lauren's song is good, nothing remarkable or something I saw as being a big hit when I first heard drivers license, good without or abcdefu though! It's just a pleasant song, I don't think it'll sustain its success but we will see!

Not that surprising, this wave of trap artists (Lil Baby, Polo G, Rod Wave, post-Drake collab Lil Durk etc.) have a massive demographic advantage on Apple Music especially in the US for some reason, they typically don't do anywhere near as well on Spotify. I would expect The Weeknd will still comfortably outperform him there tomorrow. The last Gunna album only got 3 songs in the US Spotify top 20 on day 1 (#8, #10 and #15). His top 3 songs on UK Spotify entered at #94, #99 and #105, assuming he's likely to do a bit better than that this time but still probably not as well as he's doing on Apple.

Well even Driver's License didn't sustain its success as well as it should have. I know it of course did really, really well, but given how big it was at its peak, the time of year it was released, and the fact that it was relatively unknown (both artist and song) when it first got to #1 (meaning that it had the vast majority of the rest of the population able to discover it later on giving it in theory huge longevity). Basically Driver's License should have been an easy year-end #1 but Good 4 U and Bad Habits ended up outdoing it in less time because they had more sustained success compared to Driver's Licence. It was a bit similar with Wellerman too on a smaller/larger scale (depending on how you look at it, but basically its anothe massive hit didn't sustain as well compared to others with similar-sized peaks). I would not have expected Drivers License to be out of the Spotify top 50 by autumn given how it started out and the circumstances (and yeah, I know its back now, who knows, maybe it will have more sustained success in the future but last year it was sort of frontloaded). But its nice to see that all massive hit songs don't have to hang around forever.

Trying to downplay the incredible success of Driver's Licence is a weird take.

It did appear to really drop off a cliff once it had left #1 to be fair, spending only as long in the remainder of the OCC top 40 as it did at #1
