Such a fantastic song

Whenever I think of Tasmin Archer, I'm always reminded of when she said she uses her BRIT award to tenderise meat  Legend!

She seemed very nice and talented, great singer and songwriter

too bad she kinda only had this big hit (I know she had some minor hits too but you know what I mean)

Whilst the charts lower down spring into action it’s still all quiet at the top of the charts with the Shamen ruling the roost for a month now though with just 39,000 copies sold it’s the lowest tally required for 21 weeks, it does at least cross the 200,000 mark though. It remains 8,000 copies clear of the nearest rival, that being Dr Alban for a second week, however it still hasn’t made the YTD top 10 which looks like this:

1- RHYTHM IS A DANCER- Snap! 568,000

2- STAY- Shakespears Sister 484,000

3- PLEASE DON’T GO/ GAME BOY- KWS 484,000

4- ABBA-ESQUE EP- Erasure 422,000

5- AIN’T NO DOUBT- Jimmy Nail 383,000

6- GOODNIGHT GIRL- Wet, Wet, Wet 319,000

7- DEEPLY DIPPY- Right Said Fred 284,000

8- HAZARD- Richard Marx 258,000

9- BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY/ THESE ARE THE DAYS OF OUR LIVES- Queen 252,000

10- THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE- Janet Jackson & Luther Vandross 245,000

Back in 1990 Snap’s “The Power” sampled Jocelyn Brown’s “Love’s Gonna Get You” and took it to No 1, now Bizarre Inc have used the same song (albeit it a separate part) on their new single “I’m Gonna Get You” and got Angie Brown to re-record the vocals. Guess what? It’s a hit again this time racing 17-6 (22,000). It’s their second top 10 single and previews their second album “Energique” next month.

For the first time in 7 years Prince has back to back top 10 hits, his last single “Sexy MF/ Strollin” debuted at No 7 and now “My Name Is Prince” smashes in at No 9 (14,000). Both are from his new album “Symbol” which is issued this week and widely tipped to debut at No 1 next week, and the current single is the 12th top 10 hit for the purple one.

Essentially an update of his 70s classic “Tubular Bells”, Mike Oldfield’s “Sentinel” is a shortened version of the album version which you can catch on Oldfield’s new album “Tubular Bells II” which is his first album for Warner Bros after leaving Virgin on bad terms. The album became his first chart topper in 18 years and third in total, the single “Sentinel” rises 16-10 (14,000) and a song you’ll doubtless recall from the film “The Exorcist”, whilst it’s only his 4th hit to make the top 10 they’ve now spanned 3 decades- impressive.

Tasmin Archer continues to edge up 4-3 (28,000) along with Boyz II Men 6-4 (24,000) and making room for them are Undercover 3-5 (24,000), Bob Marley & The Wailers fall 5-7 (21,000) and Lionel Richie reverses 7-8 (19,000). This week sees the release of a new Madonna single- you might have missed that!

1- EBENEEZER GOODE- The Shamen (39,000)

2- IT’S MY LIFE- Dr Alban (31,000)

3- SLEEPING SATELLITE- Tasmin Archer (28,000)

4- END OF THE ROAD- Boyz II Men (28,000)

5- BAKER STREET- Undercover (24,000)

6- I’M GONNA GET YOU- Bizarre Inc/ Angie Brown (22,000)

7- IRON LION ZION- Bob Marley & The Wailers (21,000)

8- MY DESTINY- Lionel Richie (19,000)

9- MY NAME IS PRINCE- Prince/ NPG (14,000)

10- SENTINEL- Mike Oldfield (14,000)

It sold just 33,000 copies but Tasmin Archer takes the top spot this week, the first act from Bradford to claim a chart topper since Kiki Dee in 1976, but that’s the lowest weekly tally in 24 weeks, a sign that the charts have not fully recovered from the slump earlier in the year. Boyz II Men again chase her up the charts but they actually lose sales as they rise 4-2 (26,000) and had to fend off The Shamen who drop 1-3 (25,000) who have chosen to delete their single this week so expect a sharper than usual exit from the charts as stocks dwindle.

Hitting the shops this week is a new best of Simple Minds “Glittering Prize 81/92”, Virgin have coupled together two previous singles “Alive & Kicking” (No 7, 1985) and “Love Song” (No 47, 1981) to promote the album and they see the single shoot 13-6 (22,000). It’s the group 7th top 10 hit and should get the project off to a flying start, the group are currently on a hiatus after years of full on touring.

Indulging in the modern fad of teaming popular children’s figures with dance music comes Dr Spin who are in reality Andrew Lloyd Webber and Nigel Wright who were also responsible for Bombalurina back in 1990. They’ve taken the popular kids Gameboy game of Tetris and updated it to be chart worthy, the tune itself is based on an old Russian folk song called “Korobeiniki”. The single climbs 12-8 (17,000) and have no fear Mario will soon be competing in the charts as his single gets released in a few weeks!

Trying to keep themselves ahead of teen rivals East 17, Take That return with their 6th release “A Million Love Songs” which is an EP spearheaded by the title track. It’s their first ballad and is written by frontman Gary Barlow when he was just 15, the group’s debut album “Take That & Party” did make No 5 on debut before hurtling down the charts but does revive slightly this week 66-49 as the single flies 23-9 (17,000).

Bizarre Inc rise 6-4 (23,000) to equal their previous best and Prince also advances 9-7 (20,000) whilst debut at No 1 on the album charts as expected. Dr Alban drops 2-5 (23,000) as his time is up and Undercover collapse 5-10 (16,000), Madonna incidentally only debuts at No 11 but should climb next week.

1- SLEEPING SATELLITE- Tasmin Archer (33,000)

2- END OF THE ROAD- Boyz II Men (26,000)

3- EBENEEZER GOODE- The Shamen (25,000)

4- I’M GONNA GET YOU- Bizarre Inc/ Angie Brown (23,000)

5- IT’S MY LIFE- Dr Alban (23,000)

6- LOVE SONG/ ALIVE AND KICKING- Simple Minds (22,000)

7- MY NAME IS PRINCE- Prince/ NPG (20,000)

8- TETRIS- Dr Spin (17,000)

9- A MILLION LOVE SONGS- Take That (17,000)

10- BAKER STREET- Undercover (16,000)

What a great little run of #1s at the moment with Tasmin Archer now getting there too

My favourite of the top 10 newies from the last couple of posts is 'I'm Gonna Get You' - what a shame that it's not on Spotify :(

'Tetris' is a bit of a guilty pleasure  so I have both Doctor Spin and Spin Doctors in my 90s playlist!

I'm Gonna Get You is more like early 1991 dance ie. normal piano house, than Bizarre Inc's previous rave hits like PWK and Such A Feeling. No crowd noise in the song either. I'm Gonna Get You almost comes to the charts almost bearing the message 'the rave era is now over'. Also Dr Spin's Tetris also really shows how the rave era was coming to an end too leaving just parody songs like this and Slipstreem's Rod Stewart parody.

Edited by TheSnake

not crazy about any of those newbies

best thing is Tasmin Archer reaching #1 even if on low low sales

but great she kept Boyz II Men off #1

not sure how Take That made it big cos all the songs from album 1 were pretty bad

I get the appeal from Pray on, as the singles became much better

but early singles are terrible to say the least

“Sleeping Satellite” gets a much needed shot in the arm as it increases sales by 37%

To interest 45,000 buyers and it needed that boost as Boyz II Men hold at No 2 but improve sales by a far greater 53% to 39,000 and have gone from being distant no hopers to very real challengers to Archer. The song is still No 1 in the US for a record breaking 11th straight week and will also have to convince buyers to buy the single as their album going head to head with Archer.

Bizarre Inc & Angie Brown nudge 4-3 (28,000) to give the group a new peak, but right behind them is the new Madonna Single. Yes it’s been practically back to back promo for Madonna this week who has been promoting this single, a new album and a new “coffee table” book called “Sex” all which has once more whipped up a media frenzy in a way that only she can. The book is out on Wednesday but has already generated a plethora of headlines and some eye popping exclusive pics of the material girl in not very much at all whilst the album surprisingly only debuts at No 2 behind Simple Minds despite sales that would normally guarantee a No 1. The lead single and title track for the album “Erotica” also bounces 11-4 (27,000) to become her 27th top 10 single, its debut at No 11 last week was partly accounted for by the lack of any 7” version available, that’s now rectified and in becoming her 24th consecutive top tenner she now holds the record, overtaking Cliff Richard in the process, it’s also her 9th top ten hit of the 90s, again more than any other act. The song’s themes of “S & M” have proved too controversial for MTV who have banned the promo with TOTP only playing selected shots from the video which features Naomi Campbell and Isabella Rossellini.

hqdefault.jpg

Bon Jovi are back after Jon Bon Jovi’s little foray into solo work, it’s the group’s first single in 3 years and becomes their highest debuting single ever at No 5 (25,000). Somewhat incredibly it’s just their second top ten single of their long career and comes six years after “Living On A Prayer” made No 4. The album of the same name will be in shops next month but this must already be counted as their most promising start yet.

arrested-development.jpg

Also entering the chart this week is “People Everyday” by Arrested Development. The group have already scored two US top 10 singles including this one and they been launched in the UK with a not inexpensive TV campaign which pays dividends now at No 10 (16,000). The song uses the Sly & The Family Stone single “Everyday People” (No 36, 1969) as its main hook.

Dr Spin moves 8-6 (24,000) whilst Dr Alban falls 5-7 (19,000), The Shamen slide faster 3-8 (17,000) and Take That hold at No 9 (17,000).

1- SLEEPING SATELLITE- Tasmin Archer (45,000)

2- END OF THE ROAD- Boyz II Men (39,000)

3- I’M GONNA GET YOU- Bizarre Inc/ Angie Brown (28,000)

4- EROTICA- Madonna (27,000)

5- KEEP THE FAITH- Bon Jovi (25,000)

6- TETRIS- Dr Spin (24,000)

7- IT’S MY LIFE- Dr Alban (19,000)

8- EBENEEZER GOODE- The Shamen (17,000)

9- A MILLION LOVE SONGS EP- Take That (17,000)

10- PEOPLE EVERYDAY- Arrested Development (16,000)

31ST OCTOBER

hqdefault.jpg

It loses a few hundred sales but Boyz II Men finally ascend to the top spot on sales of just 39,000. It’s the 8th week on the chart which means it has taken longer than any other 90s chart topper to make the top and indeed if you wanted to find a song that took longer in a continuous run then you’d have to go back to the Bangles in 1989 who took an almighty 9 weeks from debut to No 1. It is also still No 1 in the US for a 12th week breaking a 36 year record held by Elvis Presley.

Their album also debuts at No 12 significantly four places lower than the debut album by Tasmin Archer, which may have played a factor in the destination of the top slot, “Sleeping Satellite” falls 1-2 (31,000) sales off 30% week on week. Archer thusly is the only track to spend as little as a fortnight at the top all year, the last year to feature no solitary week chart toppers was way back in 1971. Just below Archer, Madonna and Bizarre Inc trade places selling 28,000 and 26,000 respectively though it looks like neither will now challenge the dominance of Boyz II Men, and Bon Jovi stick it out at No 5 (26,000) with a tiny sales hike.

Erma_Franklin.jpg

The blessing of having your song feature on the “Levi 501” ads strikes again, this time they’ve used Erma Franklin’s “(Take A Little) Piece Of My Heart” which failed to chart here though a cover by Sammy Hager did make No 67 in 1982, 15 years after the original. You might be wondering if she’s related to Aretha? Yes she’s her older sister and had a brief solo career in the late 60s notably providing backing vocals on her more famous sister’s recordings including “Respect”. She can finally celebrate a top 10 UK hit herself now with the song expanding 21-9 (17,000).

hqdefault.jpg

Already a hit across Europe Rage’s version of Bryan Adams’ “Run To You” a No 11 hit 7 year ago. The group have run into trouble over their name as there is also a German heavy metal act recording under the name and have had to release the track as En-Rage in some countries. The song has been produced and updated by Barry Leng who produced Amii Stewart’s “Knock On Wood/ Light My Fire” and remixed them back in 1985. This update immediately betters Adams’ original by powering in at No 10 (15,000).

Arrested Development leap 10-6 (22,000) and right behind them Take That improve 9-7 (20,000) whilst Dr Spin flip 6-8 (20,000). This week sees the release of two follow up to chart toppers going head to head Erasure Vs The Shamen!

1- END OF THE ROAD- Boyz II Men (39,000)

2- SLEEPING SATELLITE- Tasmin Archer (31,000)

3- EROTICA- Madonna (28,000)

4- I’M GONNA GET YOU- Bizarre Inc. Angie Brown (26,000)

5- KEEP THE FAITH- Bon Jovi (26,000)

6- PEOPLE EVERYDAY- Arrested Development (22,000)

7- A MILLION LOVE SONGS- Take That (20,000)

8- TETRIS- Dr Spin (20,000)

9- (TAKE A LITTLE) PIECE OF MY HEART- Erma Franklin (17,000)

10- RUN TO YOU- Rage (15,000)

how much did Madonna's Erotica album sell in week 1?
Absolutely love that version of 'Run To You'.....real stadium house vibes.....one of my favourite charting dance covers ever! But then the original song is my favourite Bryan Adams track, I prefer it to 'Summer of 69'.

7TH NOVEMBER

1423028141.jpg

With a massive 60% increase in sales week on week “End Of The Road” takes firm control of the No 1 spot this week, renewed promotion and the film “Boomerang” getting a general release all contribute to the success of the single. The album climbs 12-7 knocking Tasmin Archer’s album out of the top 10 in the process, her single “Sleeping Satellite” falls 2-4 (27,000) as well, it is overtaken by Arrested Development who soar 6-2 (31,000) and Rage who surge 10-3 (29,000) though are no threat to Boyz II Men.

The_Shamen_1992.jpg

The Shamen win the battle with Erasure for the honours of the highest new entry, the title track of their new album “Boss Drum” starts brightly at No 6 (22,000) as it marks their 4th top 10 hit in a row and a third in just 5 months, an impressive release rate, and hot off the press news that they will have a another single out in time for Christmas!

hqdefault.jpg

Speaking of Christmas Erasure will have their best of called “Pop” out in time for the big day and is widely expected to be a big festive seller. It couples together their first 20 singles and will also include the new mix of “Who Needs Love Like That” which comes in a new “Hamburg Mix” for 1992 courtesy of Dave Bascombe. The original only made No 55 in 1985 but this is of course is the follow up to the chart topping “Abba-Esque” and thusly debuts at No 10 (18,000) as it raises their tally of top 10 singles to thirteen in just six years. It’s also the 50th single to debut in the top 10 during the year beating the record of 43 established last year and a then record of 30 in 1989.

hqdefault.jpg

You might recall back in 1988 a certain Simon Harris who hit No 12 hit with “Bass (How Low Can You Go)”, well he’s been DJing and remixing since but now returns to the chart under the guise of Ambassadors Of Funk. He’s taken the Nintendo character of Mario and build a dance tune around the incidental music used in the game. Whilst “Tetris” peaked at No 6 last month “Super Mario Land” rises 14-9 (19,000), the promo is filmed at Chessington World Of Adventure.

Bizarre Inc slump 4-5 (27,000), Madonna falls 3-7 (20,000) as her album spends a third week at No 2 behind Simple Minds, and Take That fall 7-8 (20,000).

1- END OF THE ROAD- Boyz II Men (62,000)

2- PEOPLE EVERYDAY- Arrested Development (31,000)

3- RUN TO YOU- Rage (29,000)

4- SLEEPING SATELLITE- Tasmin Archer (27,000)

5- I’M GONNA GET YOU- Bizarre Inc/ Angie Brown (27,000)

6- BOSS DRUM- The Shamen (22,000)

7- EROTICA- Madonna (20,000)

8- A MILLION LOVE SONGS- Take That (20,000)

9- SUPERMARIOLAND- Ambassadors of Funk (19,000)

10- WHO NEEDS LOVE LIKE THAT (REMIX)- Erasure (18,000)

14TH NOVEMBER

boyziimen-1992.jpg

It’s bounced off the top in the US after 13 weeks and the “Boomerang” soundtrack enters the compilation charts but “End Of The Road” holds the No 1 spot in the UK for a third week though its sales are off 20% at 49,000. Total sales for the track are now 298,000 and should become the 6th single to break the 300,000 mark this week.

Charles-Eddie.jpg

After meeting on a New York Tube Charles Pettigrew and Eddie Chacon decided to work together and Charles & Eddie were born. The pair didn’t write their debut single “Would I Lie To You” but they’ve scored a hit all over the continent with the track and now find themselves jetting 14-2 (46,000) and were outselling Boyz II Men on some days last week. In the end TOTP helped the Boyz get clear but not by much!

hqdefault.jpg

Since we last met Vanessa Paradis she’s been doing adverts for Chanel, moved to the US and started dating Lenny Kravitz. He’s now produced and co-written “Be My Baby” for his girlfriend and returns her to the top 10 for only the second time as it rises 13-6 (25,000). Paradis previous best was 1988’s “Joe La Taxi” which of course made No 3 but her chart career stopped there.

hqdefault.jpg

The only new entry in the top 10 comes from Undercover who grab a second top 10 hit in just 3 months, their cover of Andrew Gold’s “Never Let Her Slip Away” debuts at No 7 (21,000). Gold wrote the original about his then girlfriend and actress Laraine Newman and had Freddie Mercury on backing vocals, it made No 5 and occupied the top 10 simultaneously with “Baker Street” which was of course their first hit. The album is out in a few weeks if you’re interested.

Arrested Development increase their sales to 35,000 but still slide 2-3 (35,000), they fend off The Shamen 6-4 (32,000) who pass by Rage as they drop 3-5 (25,000). Further down Ambassadors Of Funk inch 9-8 (21,000) as Bizarre Inc regress 5-9 (17,000) and Erasure anchor down at No 10 (16,000).

1- END OF THE ROAD- Boyz II Men (49,000)

2- WOULD I LIE TO YOU- Charles & Eddie (46,000)

3- PEOPLE EVERYDAY- Arrested Development (35,000)

4- BOSS DRUM- The Shamen (32,000)

5- RUN TO YOU- Rage (25,000)

6- BE MY BABY- Vanessa Paradis (25,000)

7- NEVER LET HER SLIP AWAY- Undercover (21,000)

8- SUPERMARIOLAND- Ambassadors of Funk (21,000)

9- I’M GONNA GET YOU- Bizarre Inc/ Angie Brown (17,000)

10- WHO NEEDS LOVE LIKE THAT- Erasure (16,000)
