I suspect Happy Xmas lost a few votes because it's an older song, maybe one day we'll need a rate of all the songs which peaked in a later decade so they get a fair crack :kink: The overplay thing as per all good Christmas songs doesn't help. Anyway it's the first loss from my top 15, but I'm guaranteed at least 20 songs in the final 40 so yay.

It's one of my all-time fave records, but it's 1972 for me not 1980, so no 80s votes. If I ever re-start my All-Time Top 800 Chart Performers (now 932) list it'll be ages and ages till it features :D

ah that's better creeping up the board a bit now :)

Love Cyndi lauper's though her greatest moment was the Jean-Michel Jarre collab I entered into BJSC and few voted for. Bah humbug!

Song For Whoever, like a lot of Beautiful South, is pleasantly innoffensive. I tend to go more for their lesser hits like Ol Red Eyes Is Back, but A Little Time is fab, Rotterdam is fun.

Phil's Paradise is solid enough, but his classic gem is yet to come. Now, if we could just have Bonnie & Alice up next it'd be a wonderful top 38...

While I agree his other one remaining is truly his best song.. I do like 'Another Day In Paradise'. Very heartfelt and powerful ballad.

and 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' is classic too although again not my top song of hers, that would be 'Time After Time'!

Pleasantly surprised so many of mine are still to come, I was worried a lot of them might be a bit niche. I'm expecting loads to drop in the 21-40 section though and have barely any left by the top 10, seems to happen to me in these polls

sad with Cyndi leaving :/ she's such an under-rated artist, especially in the UK... Girls Just Wanna Have Fun should definitely be higher :/

always had mixed feeling about Another Day in Paradise, the lyrics are so patronising :/ really not a fan of multi millionaires writing songs about social injustice...

Well it'll be interesting to see how Kate Bush fares in a #2s (or possibly #1s) of the 2020s, whenever that happens...

Anyhow I'm happy to have given an average of just over 10 points to each song in this top 40, including the ones I didn't vote for!

Ullman’s cover of the Kirsty MacColl track was her second single and the biggest getting lodged behind a million seller and the best seller of that year.

A whooping 9 of us gave points to this Madonna track which still ends up as our third favourite 80s No 2 as far as we are concerned. It allowed her to become the first female solo act to occupy the top 2 positions in the singles chart ever, all of that and it was a re-release of a single which was itself under 2 years old.

Not massively keen on any of those - Top 37 already an improvement on the Top 40! ^_^ They Don’t Know is sweet though.

I'd go along with Je Ne Sais... being Kylie's best 80s #2.

Tracey's version of They Don't Know is almost up there with Kirsty's original, which didn't chart but is possibly the best song she wrote.

Holiday is an essential song of Madonna's journey to superstardom, but not really one I'd specifically choose to listen to. MC Miker G & Deejay Sven's 'Holiday Rap' on the other hand... :cheeseblock:

Great start to the top 40 for me, two of my higher votes out.

I've heard quite a few covers of They Don't Know and they're all good - just a great song.

In perspective, Holiday is not Madonna's bestest so surprised it did so well

a hit 3 times in the UK!

Forgot to add......Another 30 pointer to leave tomorrow!

Hope it's not me! :gaga:

Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi is Kylie's best 80s number 2 single definitely! The video is so cute.

Still in its infancy this was an early dance hit that contained around 30 samples. This is our 3rd Favourite No 2 of 1988.
