August 6, 20231 yr I agree re Imogen she really came into her role this series I liked her a lot. I don’t like the whole calling her a “token ally” in it.
August 7, 20231 yr This was good, however I did prefer season one. The plot felt quite lacking in parts. I have to applaud the diversity and authenticity of the cast though, fantastic representation for the queer community. I found myself more drawn to Isaac and Imogen's stories so I hope there are big plans to develope those in future seasons.
August 17, 20231 yr I binged all of season 1 and season 2 thsi week. Don’t know how I missed it last year. This is possibly one of the best shows I’ve ever watched. I felt so emotionally invested and it’s been on my mind all week. I think I’m comparing my own experiences as a gay teenager years ago and the show really makes you reflect on your friendship circle and what relationships could have been. I absolutely loved Mr Farouk and Charlie’s sister. But I have to say every single character was superbly cast and they all play their role so well. Cannot wait for season 3. I hope it continues after that too.
March 17, 20241 yr Hopefully good news! I didnt think we'd be getting it until August again We probably wont get Series 3 until then or later i'd imagine. Be good to get a date though!
March 20, 20241 yr October! Well, I'm sure it'll be worth the wait. Probably doesn't mean anything, but interesting that Season 1 premiered in spring, Season 2 in the summer and now Season 3 will be in autumn. So perhaps Season 4 will be out in winter 2025? I haven't actually read Volume 5 of the graphic novel yet, so I'd better get on with that!
March 20, 20241 yr I thought that Season 3 would basically cover the 4th volume, given what goes on in it and its fairly long compared to a lot of the other volumes. But judging by that Insta vid, looks like some of Volume 5 is in there too. I guess some of Volume 4 was changed and in with Season 2 - so maybe some of it has just changed around again. I guess Volume 5 was kind of slight compared to 4.
October 3, 2024Oct 3 Binged the 3rd series this morning really enjoyed it! Did feel more adult and mature. Tom Odell also doing well out of the soundtrack too with 2 songs featured!
October 3, 2024Oct 3 I'm up to episode 3 and the ending has me in bits. I'm not ready for 5 more episodes of emotional turmoil
October 4, 2024Oct 4 Watched first four episodes last night and I loved it And I 100% approve of the use of Tom Odell (twice), particularly the song chosen for the ‘I Love You’ moment I still feel a little nostalgia for my sixth form group watching this and wish I’d been as open with them as they all are. Still shows the progress the world has made, particularly around conversations on mental health and identity
October 4, 2024Oct 4 Oh and I still feel inappropriate crushing on Kit Connor. He’s like 20 here right and now looks like one of those 25 actors playing a 15 year old…
October 5, 2024Oct 5 Author SPOILER WARNING - the post below contains MAJOR SPOILERS for season 3 I binged this last night with Jay and Harry (and Maz for part of it), as is tradition for us with a new Heartstopper season now, and it was another spectacular season. It felt like seasons 1 and 2 had put in a lot of the groundwork that allowed season 3 to be so powerful. The optimism and light of those seasons was still present here, but this was heavier viewing for sure (and, without having read more than the first couple of books, I knew darker stuff was coming), and the pay-off was massive. Some of the best performances the cast have given so far, with a particular highlight being the experimental narrative approach to episode 4. Will forever baffle me how a loud minority love to slate this show, for being unrealistic, or too positive, when it's providing such positive examples of healthy relationships on a *major* platform, that can hopefully continue to have a major influence like it already has, particularly amongst young people (it's the TV show I've heard my students talk about the most over the last few years, would never have imagined before its release that a show so LGBTQ+ friendly would become so mainstream!). Obviously, Nick and Charlie were centre stage as usual, but it felt like they stepped back into being the real main focus, much like season 1, whereas season 2 felt a bit more emsemble-like. Whilst the likes of Tao, Elle, Tara, Darcy and Isaac continue to get development, Nick and Charlie receive much of the focus, for obvious reasons. Charlie's eating disorder was portrayed delicately, without romanticising it or preaching to the audience, but instead providing a realistic yet optimistic approach to a mental illness and how it affects not just the person who has it, but those immediately around them. Joe Locke and Kit Connor both gave their best performances yet, and a major shoutout to Jenny Walser, who majorly stepped up as Tori this season to become one of the most essential characters, and a key part of Charlie's story. Charlie's mum was difficult to watch at many points but good on the show for exploring the nuances and complexities of her relationship with both of her children. Episode 4 was a tough watch in particular, and it made me cry (a rarity for a TV show) on a few occasions. Showing that there's a light at the end of a tunnel, whilst also not hiding that relapses happen and there's no quick-fix, is vital for something like anorexia which we don't see covered in drama very often - a positive message to send out. It hits harder given the groundwork of Nick and Charlie's relationship in seasons 1 and 2 as well, and how deeply they care for each other. Darcy's gender identity journey was heartwarming to watch unfold as well as Tara (and everyone else)'s unquestioned support of this. I loved them touching on Tao and Elle taking the next step, and how Elle in particular feels about that, as well as the discussion around how trans people are represented in the media - horrible to watch Elle ambushed in that interview, but we know it's the sad reality of what's happening at the moment. Isaac coming out and subsequently re-finding his place within the friendship group was touching, he was a ray of sunshine throughout the season! I loved Imogen's story too, even if it wasn't the top priority of the season, but I assume we'll see more of that next time. I did miss Olivia Colman's presence, but Hayley Atwell did a great job at stepping in and delivering the "love can't cure a mental illness" scene, which was very powerful. Would've loved a little more of Mr Ajayi, Mr Farouk and Coach Singh! Annette Badland was ICONIC casting as Darcy's gran *.* The finale felt a little more understated this time round, but that's okay - I like that they didn't minimise the discussion and how both Nick and Charlie feel around having sex for the first time, particularly in relation to Charlie's mental health and self esteem. I feel like the show probably has one more season left in it, going by what Alice has said before, and I'd be okay with that - it's continued to deliver and deliver so far, and I'd love it to wrap the story up in an appropriate way and go out on a high. Season 4 renewal immediately pls x PS: major bonus points for not one but two Tom Odell songs - the inspired choice of Best Day of My Life was perfect, and the juxtaposition of the Black Friday lyrics and Charlie's situation in that moment was great.
October 5, 2024Oct 5 I finished season 3 earlier today but genuinely didn't realise I'd finished it... I'm gonna be honest, I didn't enjoy this and I don't see me continuing with any future seasons. It just felt really cringey and that it was a whole bunch of barely baked storylines. The potential was there but it fell flat for me but then again, I definitely felt like this season was more geared towards highschoolers. The first seasons were too but there was an element of nostalgia for older queer people who didn't have this sort of media growing up. I do think they did a good job tackling a difficult storyline with Charlie and also highlighting how that impacted Nick as well. I did really like Tori this season, I'd like to have seen more of her story arc. They could have handled Darcey's storyline better too, it felt like a bunch of stereotypes were put upon them and that was that, "I'm wearing trousers now, I don't like being called lady, finally got my dream mullet" etc. I think making them non-binary did make sense and it's nice to have that representation it would have just been nicer to see more of how Darcey's brain was processing it until they got to that decision etc, it just felt flung in and rushed, same for Imogen and Isaac although we at least got a bit more behind Isaac last season. They really didn't do much with Elle either but they set it up like they were going to. Maybe they'll pick those storylines up again next season but that feels too far away, I honestly think they need a part 2 for this season as it all felt pretty incomplete imo.
October 6, 2024Oct 6 For me it's another very strong season! It's very faithful to the source material (with the non-book characters being that extra little sprinkling for the TV show). I feel like if I went into more depth about the season, I'd only be repeating Joseph's great write up, which I agree with word for word! Heartstopper Season 3 currently holds 100% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 18 reviews :cheeseblock:
