April 22Apr 22 Netflix have announced that the final chapter of Heartstopper will be a movie, based on the upcoming volume 6 of the books!Intriguing, wasn’t expecting a film but I feel like this definitely allows for a good send off in a way that they maybe wouldn’t have been able to cram into however many episodes of a final season.
April 22Apr 22 I am pleased they are bringing it back to finish it off, as I had feared they might have just stopped after S3.A movie, I guess, will be in line with around 3 or 4 episodes, so around half of what we usually get.Hasn't each series covered more than one book each? Which would suggest why the final book is cut down to a movie. Edited April 22Apr 22 by ChrisJK
April 22Apr 22 I'm happy that they will get to wrap this up! The lack of news over the last 6 months has started to make me feel uneasy about its future, so that's a relief!I agree a movie is probably the best way to go to conclude Heartstopper. As well as Volume 6, this season will also draw from the novella "Nick and Charlie".Interestingly Kit Connor and Joe Locke will be Executive Producers, and Wash Westmoreland is the director.Film logline:SpoilerNick and Charlie are inseparable, but with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet. Meanwhile, their friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on. April 29Apr 29 Why Heartstopper Creator Alice Oseman Is “So Excited” About the Upcoming MovieKit Connor and Joe Locke will star in the YA romance’s “memorable, sophisticated, and atmospheric” conclusion.https://www.netflix.com/tudum/articles/heartstopper-movie-alice-oseman-plot-newsBy Ariana RomeroApril 28, 2025Prepare to say “hi” to Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) and Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) one last time. Fan-favorite romance Heartstopper will conclude with an upcoming Heartstopper feature film. The film will star Connor and Locke (who will also serve as executive producers), and is written by Heartstopper creator, executive producer, and graphic novelist Alice Oseman. “I’m so excited to embark on this journey together now that it’s no longer a secret!” the writer tells Tudum. The movie picks up after the swoony Season 3 finale, which saw Nick, Charlie, and many of their friends take their relationships to a new level. Although the Heartstopper team will begin production this summer, Oseman confirms they’ve been working on the script for months. "The movie will be an exploration of time, memory, love, pain, the changing of the seasons, endings and beginnings, and the core element of Heartstopper: the ordinary magic of our everyday lives," she tells Tudum. Can first loves really last forever? Keep reading as Oseman previews what lies in store. What does Alice Oseman say about the Heartstopper movie? How does it feel to finally be able to tell the fans that Heartstopper is coming back with a movie? It’s a huge sigh of relief! We’ve been working towards and hoping for this moment since we wrapped production of Season 3 at the end of 2023. There has been a huge amount of dedication and determination behind the scenes to get to this point. I’ve seen how frustrated and worried fans have been about whether we’d get to tell the end of the story — I’ve had messages asking about it every single day since Season 3 dropped! So I’m incredibly relieved that the answer is YES. Nick, Charlie, and all their friends’ stories are about to come to an end on-screen. What do you hope to accomplish with the movie? On a basic level, of course, I want the movie to be a beautiful and emotional send-off for the Heartstopper story — celebrating what Heartstopper means to people, a chance to say goodbye to our beloved characters, and many hints of what’s to come in the characters’ future lives. On a slightly deeper level, I think this movie will explore what makes love survive, or what elevates it, or deepens it. At 18 and 17, Nick and Charlie are hurtling towards their adult lives. Many teenage relationships don’t survive that pivotal moment of change. Are Nick and Charlie a forever love? If they are, why? I want the movie to capture this transitional moment for them as a couple — from teens to adults, from teen romance to forever love, from past to future. And in doing so, get to the heart of what teenage love can become as adolescence becomes a memory, and what teenage love can mean for people in the overall picture of their lives. An exploration of time, memory, love, pain, the changing of the seasons, endings and beginnings, and the core element of Heartstopper: the ordinary magic of our everyday lives. The Heartstopper movie starts filming this summer. How far into the writing process are you? It’s already gone through several drafts, and I’m now working closely with our director Wash Westmoreland and the production team to iron out some final tweaks. As we officially head into pre-production, we’ll be organizing and discussing all aspects of the movie from costume to locations to music and more. It’s a lot of fun. What does it mean to you to see all the positive fan responses to the news? The excitement and joy from Heartstopper fans is such a huge part of why we are still able to tell this story, years later. I’m so grateful to have such a passionate, supportive audience. I always have so much fun interacting with the Heartstopper community. I was pretty nervous about this announcement, but I shouldn’t have been, because the response has been amazing! I’ve always felt so much warmth and positivity from the Heartstopper community, and I’m so, so thankful for that. What do you have to say to fans who are surprised Heartstopper is ending with a movie instead of another season? I totally understand if fans are a little apprehensive. It’s a big change from what we know. It’s something totally new and unknown, and yes, the runtime will be less than a TV season. Even I needed some time to process and come to terms with the change. But once I began to see the entire vision, I knew it would be something even more beautiful than a regular season could achieve. We are feeling very ambitious about what is possible in a movie format. With no need for end-of-episode cliff-hangers or a new twist every episode, every part of Heartstopper can be elevated to a higher quality to create something memorable, sophisticated, and atmospheric.Kit Connor and Joe Locke are executive producers for the movie. What are you most excited about when it comes to working with them in this expanded role? I’m very excited to work with Kit and Joe on solving the creative and logistical problems that always arise throughout production. I’ve always enjoyed hearing their thoughts and ideas about Heartstopper, and I’m hoping that we’ll have many more of those conversations now that we’re an exec team. We all want to work together to make the best movie we can, and hopefully, with their insights and experience, we’re even better suited to making that possible. The last time we saw the characters, they were all taking new steps in their relationships and lives, from exploring physical intimacy to university prep. What can you say is ahead for them as they mature? The most pressing issue for Nick and Charlie, as we know from the end of Season 3, is that Nick will soon be leaving for university, effectively making Nick and Charlie a long-distance couple. For a teenage relationship, this is a pretty huge hurdle to overcome. Each of them has some conflicting feelings about this development. Nick isn’t sure who he is without Charlie, and Charlie is nervous about being left behind. They have some work to do — both on their relationship and individually. Heartstopper’s other protagonists are facing similar conundrums about their futures. Because it’s not just the relationships that are being pulled in different directions, but the friendships too. I don’t want to tease too much more yet … The movie will be based on your upcoming sixth and final Heartstopper graphic novel. What can you tell us about that yet-to-be-released book? I spent the first few months of 2024 writing the story and dialogue for Heartstopper Volume 6, and I’ve been drawing the pages since last June. I’m currently just over halfway through drawing the book. I hope to finish drawing it by the end of the year … though I’m not sure if I’ll be successful. But I’ll try my best. When I started planning this final book, I told myself I was allowed to include anything and everything I’d always wanted to explore with these characters. I’m proud to say that’s what I’ve been doing. Among many things, it explores Charlie finding a new sense of confidence and independence, and healing from some of his old demons. Meanwhile, Nick has a bit of a crisis about his future, influenced by memories of his past. Are there any characters or storylines you want to tease for now? I’ve been uploading the Heartstopper Volume 6 comics free-to-read on their usual web-comic platform, if you’d rather not wait for the book publication. So, if you’re looking for hints about what might happen in the movie, I’d recommend checking those out. Of course, there will be some tweaks for the movie, as there always are in adaptations … But I’ll leave those a surprise for now.
April 30Apr 30 Great article - that's got me very excited and optimistic about the film. You just know there are going to be so many critics that won't be able to praise the escapism, hope and joy of what I assume is going to end up being a turbulent storyline with lots of doubts and ups and downs in between that ends on a bright, positive note for all of the characters and their relationships with one another.
