Err well i bought it in 1984  and my aunty norma loves it and loves stevie wonder. A plodding entirely self made singalong long overdue chart topper is in no way the equal of the chicken song a track designed to be incredibly annoying.
If IJCTSILY gets added then it becomes a different rate and you'd have to include Jennifer Rush, Bryan Adams, Whitney - IWALY, Celine Dion, etc. - these may not be to everyone's taste, but they are not objectively bad songs and they are still popular with large swathes of the general public - unlike, say, Robson & Jerome whom no one in their right mind listens to anymore.
I wouldn't be trying to include those others... they may be overplayed but I don't think they're awful. The Stevie one however I think is lyrically vomit inducing - I'm also not convinced it is any more listened to these days than said Robson & Jerome songs.
292 million Spotify streams compared to just shy of 1.8 million for the top R&J track?
Yeah the Stevie Wonder is terrible but is it amongst the 100 worst #1s of all time terrible - just look at what’s made the list so far

I started totting up the totals of the many many youtube videos and got to 208 million before giving up as they just kept coming and coming 😁 i think its fair to say its hugely popular :)

Superstition, Stevies greatest single, is on 188 million on Youtube. So more popular than his greatest record. Its not right that a karaoke singalong is more popular but there you go. :o

I am genuinely gobsmacked! I haven’t heard the song played in decades and I’ve only ever heard people refer to it as saccharine drivel or similar statements.

I’ve made a couple of edits:

- Removed the Jason and Sonia tracks as while they’re fairly rubbish I’m not convinced anyone really feels that strongly about them.

- Added Goombay Dance Band

Not convinced on the case for Stevie yet. Could yet be persuaded on Shaky’s Green Door or Lionel’s Hello.

Try Radio 2 or any commercial greatest hits radio station : ) i used to love it then i got sick of hearing it as an oldie and tend to avoid it these days. Id rather hear Neiked's rewrite I Just Called :o

I'd support Dandy in adding I Just Called to the list :o Nothing to do with overplay but rather this being a bad song with the worst lyrics ever

I personally like Hello even if people often ridicule it

Yes, ‘I just called’ is so saccharine and really not in a good way that others are. Hello isn’t any where near as bad.

ewww Hello is creepy, the lyrics rabbit on about he can see it in her eyes and the video laughably shows she is blind and troublingly has a teacher/student vibe to it. The entire song is basically about being a stalker in love with someone he's never met. At best that's just shallow, at worst it shows obsession!

Kissed her a thousand times in his dreams? That's obsession!

I Just Called To Say I Love is listing all of the cliched song lyrics and occasions one buys chocs, cards, blah blah blah, that there are and saying NO to them all, all Stevie needs is a telephone and just ringing up to say I Love You on an ordinary day. That's way more wholesome and sincere. The lyrics are deliberately cliched and sugar sweet cos ol Stevie is saying he dont need none of that crap to just be with Mrs Stevie....
