Posted June 6, 20223 yr If it got released? I think a 5-16-37-42-55-52-88-RE 99- kind of run with about 40k sales. Why? -Top 5 because it’s Steps and they were on a high chartwise. -Not an original video/extra tracks on the single. -Lack of promo. Your thoughts?
June 6, 20223 yr I think it would have scraped the top 10 and had something like this chart run: 8-18-26-40-55-75
June 6, 20223 yr Author Well are we basing this on the band still being together or having still broken up? I based it on the band still being together. With the split (and being released) I wonder what it would’ve done?
June 6, 20223 yr I based it on the band still being together. With the split (and being released) I wonder what it would’ve done? I was gonna say maybe low top 10 or #5 on a quiet week would be near enough my estimation as well. Had it still got released after they split I reckon it would have been a different story and it would have struggled.
June 6, 20223 yr On the assumption there would be 2cds and a cassette, I would say it might scrape top five for a week, maybe another week top ten. 6/7 weeks top 40!
June 6, 20223 yr The song was originally planned for a February 2002 release, but scrapped due to their split & was again to be released in November of that same year to promote their 'Last Dance' compilation, but was again cancelled due to lack of interest & plus they were no longer together & it seemed pointless to release something that would have ruined their run of top 10 hits up to that point. However if the song did get released in February 2002, while they were still together & probably still have that W.I.P. remix on the main release, I think it would have definately hit the top 10 at about the #7 spot. Due to a few factors. Firstly it's single #3 of a Million selling 'Greatest Hits' album with the other 2 singles charting at #2 & #5, which already shows a decline & doubt 'BDD' would have charted higher than these even on a quiet week. Plus their last single 'Words Are Not Enough' was their lowest seller with a 115,000 (which isn't that terrible) & that was during the busy X-Mas market, so doubt 'Baby Don't Dance' would have sold more in the early months of '02, which normally have pretty low sales anyway, especially given that its the early 00's. Also I doubt this would have a proper music video, they would have probably used the tour footage performance & don't think this would have gotten a whole lot of promo or attention, but the fans would have certainly secured this with a top 10 placing, but would drop out fast with overall sales of being about 70-80k. *7*-17-26-39-49-63-70-x-62 Also this is what the CD releases may have looked like CD #1 1. Baby Don't Dance (W.I.P. Radio Edit) 2. Baby Don't Dance (W.I.P. Pushing It Mix) 3. Heartbeat (Simon Hill Mix) 4. Baby Don't Dance (Music Video) CD #2 1. Baby Don't Dance (Album Version) 2. Baby Don't Dance (W.I.P. Extended Mix) 3. Only In My Dreams (Remix) 4. Steps W.I.P Megamix Edited June 6, 20223 yr by Nina West
June 6, 20223 yr Author Thanks for your thoughts! I think it’s a good thing this one got cancelled as it might have ruined their top 5/10 streak. Only as a double a with a goodbye song or might had a chance of being a hit with a decent run. Something else..does someone know a place where I can get a copy for a decent price?

Hahaha it’s very rare! Good luck!
June 6, 20223 yr It’s an interesting one as I never understood why this was to be a single. I don’t think it’s good enough quality and I think it would have limped in the charts in the 8-12 region. I’m glad it wasn’t released personally
June 6, 20223 yr Im glad it wasnt a single aswell although it probably would have went Top 10 but i couldnt see it doing much overall.
June 7, 20223 yr Agree with the comments on the songs quality. For me, it would have been their weakest single to date
June 7, 20223 yr I like Baby Don't Dance more than most of you, it seems. The charts in 2002 were still very pop orientated, so I see no reason why it wouldn't have done just as well as they were accustomed to, if they'd stayed together. They managed to get Words Are Not Enough/I Know Him So Well to #5. I don't think they'd have suddenly found themselves struggling for Top 10 with the next single. I've always found it curious that the label endeavoured to release it towards the end of 2002 though, going as far as to actually print copies of it before pulling the plug. Without an active group to promote it, it would have gone so unnoticed. I wish I had a copy of it but it's always so rare and expensive! By the way, if it had actually happened, it would have been this chart week: https://www.officialcharts.com/charts/singl.../20021117/7501/ (totally off topic but good grief at that Blazin' Squad song outcharting Sugababes, Kylie & Coldplay!)
June 7, 20223 yr I'm thinking in that week, with them having split almost a year previously etc it'd have probably been low top 20 at best.
June 7, 20223 yr I was thinking fans may have come out in support buying it trying to show H and Claire how wrong their decision was.
June 7, 20223 yr I was thinking fans may have come out in support buying it trying to show H and Claire how wrong their decision was. Would have been hilarious if it outpeaked their releases 🤣
June 7, 20223 yr A good thing that this never surfaced as a single I think, for me it's not a particularly strong song and would have probably been their lowest peaking hit since 5,6,7,8, particularly if it had been left to late 2002. I doubt in that scenario it would have managed much higher than about No.16. Other than Chain Reaction, I didn't find any of the new songs on Gold to be up to their usual standard. Only In My Dreams was catchy but dated and Baby Don't Dance and Words Are Not Enough were pretty bland for me. It would have been intriguing to see what direction they ended up going in with a 2002 album if they'd stayed together but I feel like the cracks were starting to show musically personally. And the charts were far less welcoming of their brand of pop by this point - something a bit cooler might have worked I guess along the lines of Deeper Shade of Blue, but just look at what happened to poor S Club's 2002 album. I think - in the most devastating way possible of course - they went out on top before they faded out, which meant they could essentially pick up where they left off when they returned, which they did. They are still the only pop act of their era selling out their own headline tours, while the others are all on the legacy circuit touring with loads of other bands of the era.
