I think they could do a revenue type chart, weighting of streaming to be changed etc. But these things are mentioned all the time and nothing gets done.
I think the biggest shock for me is that in the last 6 months (maybe more?) streaming seems to have really accelerated its impact on the album chart.

In terms of chart weeks Kylie had 27 (Golden), 20 (SBIT), 17 (Disco) and is now struggling for a 5th week with Tension.

Rick Astley 42 weeks (50), Beautiful Life (19), Best Of Me (10) and is likely to be out after 2 weeks with his new album.

There seems to be no chance for artists that have dominance in physicals and downloads to complete and the bottom end of the charts feels more clogged up than normal with collections by Phil Collins, Pitbull, Killers, Billy Joel, Smiths and old albums by the likes of Bruno Mars, 50 Cent and Rihanna.

As has been mentioned there are so many albums that I doubt many are listening to all the way through or seeking out but contain multiple big hits that are playlisted (not convinced large numbers of people are searching for Pitbulls Greatest Hits in 2023).

Not sure what the OCC can do to rectify as ultimately the album is fast becoming a defunct format and they want sales to look as good as possible which is why they turn a blind eye to 20+ formats being released for albums every week and double counting of streams etc.,

The album chart just feels like it doesnt reflect what people are actually buying, there are many albums on the chart that are there because maybe 3 songs are getting streamed and outside of that nothing else, Pitbull is a good example and i would doubt the album has actually sold much physically or paid downloads. Leaving the sales aspects aside i think whats annoying is that album tracks dont get listened to anymore as people arent buying the actual album or streaming the full album in many cases and people dont know any songs apart from singles that do well.

Maroon 5 singles album bombed when released and again another album which probably doesnt sell hardly anything but is been propped up by a couple of songs doing well on streams. I understand this is how it all works now and its not going to change but an album that sells say 1k albums a week in paid for sales makes more money than album gaining say 5k on streams but the chart in no way reflects that.

For new acts it must be so hard to make money when it works like this especially when they are not an established touring act either so it must be very difficult for record companies to make money.

Maybe the album chart should be all sales-based and the singles chart all streaming? That way one reflects what people are actually buying and what people are streaming/listening to?
^^ Love the idea but the OCC need to keep the album chart sales inflated to maintain its relevance, without streaming we’d probably have albums selling 400-500 physicals appearing in the Top 75 which they would never go for.
The album as a format is essentially dying, that's the problem. Throwing everything towards week 1 with multi-formats is the only way to generate any real revenue now for most artists.

They just need to exclude playlisting streams from the album chart. It is such a simple solution, they can wait streams for albums however they like then to keep sales 'high'.

Record labels would soon invest in albums and getting them properly streamed as a whole then.

They don’t want to admit how much impact it actually has because it shows how easily manipulated the charts can be. I’d love it but it’s never gonna happen

With the current chart rules you might as well release 4 singles before an album, even if they aren't chart smashes will end up on smaller playlists and people's own personal playlists. Also to then spread those singles out on the tracklist to try and force people to stream it all not just the first 4 songs on the album.

Kylie could have done that but I think her main focus or the labels/management was Vegas. The album felt more like promotion for that than to try and increase her streaming sales.

^^ Agree that Vegas has superseded everything - however, I don’t think they expected PP to take off and demand for Kylie to be everywhere.

Well I mean the Album was originally going to be called Vegas High so yes it was meant for her Vegas Stint.

PS. Did anything ever happen about what she did with Gaby Rosyln while at the BBC ?

It was all hush hush. Gaby said it wasn't to do with Children In Need so wondered what it was..... maybe it was already shown?

As expected out of the Top 100 today :nocheer:

I'll post the position when I get hold of it, unless someone beats me to it, but I'm hopeful it's not too far from the Top 100. Kylie is #27 on the sales chart and Katy Perry's 'Teenage Dream' is #32 and sold 900-1,000 (judging by how it climbed in the official chart thanks to the vinyl release), plus we know Kylie already did 200 on streaming on the Monday update. At a guess, Kylie did about 1.4k last week and Rick Astley is #109 overall with 1,470 chart sales.

Not a complaint but what a weird chart era so far.

We’re used to singles missing the Top 50/75 and albums hanging around for weeks and weeks, now we have Top 10 and 20 singles and the album (for now - it’ll be back) out after a month.

Totally reverse to what we have become accustomed to

All that being said though I’ll happily take hit singles in exchange for album chart weeks.

I always thought they should count complete standard album streams towards the album chart & anything extra for individual tracks goes to singles chart.

Definitely would take singles chart positions ahead of album low chart positions, esepecially as it will always be called a number 1 album. PP run was so much fun and it getting on to playlists that Kylie has never been on, all new to us all that 19 week run! Even Tension single has been exciting!!!!

I mean she will probably sell 4k of each vinyl? thats 12k x £10 = £120,000 generated just from that lol

Exactly lol if you would’ve told me even a few weeks ago that Tension (the song) will outlast Tension (the album) on the charts I wouldn’t have believed it!
