I am sorry to come across a bit negative, it wasn’t my intention at all! I just expected something significantly higher, given how Padam and Tension performed and with the overall hype, but I’ll manage my expectations. Everything regardless is a fantastic result, maybe I expected a little bit too much!

 

Tension’ debuts with 3,312,725 streams on Spotify in its first full day surpassing ‘Disco’ (2.6M) with less songs!

 

The market overall grew significantly too though. Album streaming sales in the UK:

W/E 12/11/2020: 1 389 944

W/E 28/09/2023: 1 886 343 (+36%).

 

And Tension streaming grew by 26% compared to DISCO (if we take out the 15th and 16th track of DISCO, the growth would have been 37%, which is pretty much in line with the market growth). This is why I projected and expected higher streams.

But at the same time the physical overall sales slumped from 480,880 to 261,365 copies. So yeah, you are right regarding the physicals — the percentage of Kylie sales among overall weekly sales is going to be huge and incredibly impressive!

I'm not crazy about the synth-heavy tracks. She is several years late to jump on the 80's bandwagon just now. Everyone (and their mother) has done this sound in recent years.

 

The 80s synth style is a classic Kylie sound. This ain't a bandwagon jump, it's her damn bandwagon!

 

She is doing incredible numbers.

Interesting comments on tension thank god it made the album and also a single. I wonder if hadnt what would the album have been called.

Everyone saying she has all these variants. Many are probably quite limited in volume, like the vinyls? I mean 3 or 4 vinyls are sold out. I don't think 200 huge Kylie fans around the world buying a copy of everything is making her UK sales big lol. It obviously helps but lots of UK fans will buy one copy or just stream the album or buy a copy for a friend for Xmas etc.

The "So many variants" argument really annoys me.

 

"They have loads of variants." So?

"They want the number 1 so bad!" well... DUH.

"They're exploiting their fans!!!" no one is forcing their fans to buy every version of the album... lmao :\

 

It's just a major gripe for me atm. The more variants the better! I (personally) will only choose one variant of any album unless I get an incentive to buy another one. Like if they come in a really cheap bundle (like I did with Busted) or if there is a difference in the tracklisting or something (like '1989 (Taylor's Version)' where I ordered the pink one but then the tangerine was on sale soon after and that has an extra track - although tbf had I known the tangerine was coming I wouldn't have bothered with the pink, but I still ordered it as there was enough of an incentive for me to do so.)

So very true. Not like they’re selling 1 track per variant and you have to buy all 12! It’s like clothing - your favourite tee shirt is in 5 diff colours and you pick whichever one(s) you want.

 

Also, it seems ok when some artists do it but gets called out and highlighted when some others do

Have to say the lack of stock on her store and Townsend is pretty poor for release week.

 

Literally a black vinyl, some cassettes and a £10 CD.

 

Amazon has deluxe, standard cds + black vinyl

 

HMV has deluxe, standard, hmv exclusive CD and green and black vinyls

 

I know they limit stuff to sell out but really should be more options

 

I am guessing we may get signed vinyl and deluxe CD still? Maybe deluxe vinyl? Picture disc?

It’ll be very interesting to see her total vinyl sales this week…perhaps they’ve produced the same amount as Disco because Taylor Swift aside, the market generally hasn’t exploded.

 

Adele 30 obviously sold well but they totally over estimated her vinyl and been left with huge amounts. Casual fans stream these days, they don’t even buy the massively reduced CDs and reduced vinyl usually sells in trickle amounts over time.

 

The fact that new CD albums are the same price as 30 years ago says it all really.

The vinyl I hope will remain available for the casual buyer.

As the number 1 is guaranteed already I think if they have anything else to offer keep it for week 2 to help prop up sales.

On eBay you can see they are numbered up to 4000. At the store yesterday they said they were nearing the end of stock. If any appear on her online store I'll be shocked.

 

We definitely need a new one on her store though.

I mean she said in an interview that the length of album pre-order was to get the vinyls produced so they can't just make lots more i guess. Hopefully they have a deluxe otherwise its only the black vinyl and hmv green vinyl left.........
