Neil, no discounts.

Its probably made more $$ than Disco which was heavily discounted from week 1.

Yes, £15.99 for deluxe is a lot. I’ve just bought Joel Corey’s deluxe and that was only £10.99. It’s obviously connected well with the fan base but not the wider public yet.

if BMG were worried they would have dropped the CDs to 7.99 and 11.99, the itunes to 4.99 and 6.99 and LPs to 19.99

They must have a plan and promo

Well it’s dropping a lot more quickly than last two albums even in a low sales climate. Two weeks in T20 is really poor.

Unfortunately, this is the nature of the album chart these days which is really different to 2018 and 2020.

I think it’s a bit over the top to say people were having meltdowns. I guess some fans are starting to realise this era won’t be as big as we all hoped following the success of Padam. Tension is very unlikely to sell anywhere near the last two albums. It did well in the first week but that was due to big pre-orders and fans buying multiple copies. It’s dropped off massively this week (a much bigger drop in %) than compared to both disco & golden. It’s also quite a bit down compared to disco at the same stage. If you look at the trends of her last two albums, both albums sold the bulk of their total output in the first 6-8 weeks with trickle sales afterwards. Of course it will continue to sell but it’s unlikely to be in high amounts unless there is major promotion. The reality is the album market has shrank further since disco and most artists aren’t selling very well. Look at Ed Sheeran and Lewis Capaldi who are both more contemporary so why would Kylie suddenly buck this trend when she appeals to more of a niche market?

Hi my hun

Yes I have seen many meltdowns over the Kylie forum with people not fully understanding the album market or having unrealistic expectations (see the comment about this album being a fever 2.0 further up the thread)

This album will outsell golden and disco in the long run. This album currently has 2 singles, both doing great streaming wise for Kylie. She will have at least another 2 singles, which one may be a feature? If they can get 2 more singles at least to sell more each week than her previous albums, then she will start collecting more album sales. Padam and Tension will be downweighted (not sure if its the highest 2 or 3 songs that get downweighted) if it is 2 then single 3 and 4 will start pulling in some extra streaming sales.

Lets look back in 2 years time and Tension will be close to outselling Disco in the UK (IF it has not happened by that point). This album will be a much bigger trickle seller than her previous BMG albums.

Agree my hun

Even ed is number 8 in the mids, I wonder if he will hold number 8 this week.

Tension will trickle sell more than Disco or Golden has done even beyond the campaign.

And if it doesnt hun, I will buy 100k CDs 😂😂😂

On a serious note, it is scary how much the album market reduces year on year

Maybe they will do some discounts for week 4 or maybe they are happy snatching sales at full prices

Exactly! Even they have been amazed by the sales of Tension in this climate and would rather make more money per record sale than drop the price down for a longer run in the charts.

So I presume Kylie is back in MEL now after a weekend in LA?

I hope you’re right about tension selling more but personally I can’t see it. Week 3 and it’s already out of the T20 and will barely reach 60k by the end of this week. I’m sure BMG will push 2-3 more singles but they’re unlikely to have any massive impact as Kylie isn’t really a singles artist anymore (Padam was the exception of course). As I said before, the album will continue to sell but in low amounts unless there is any promotion like the audience show which will give it a temporary boost. Long term, its highly unlikely to reach the sales of disco or golden even with a reissue due to a reflection of the declining market.

We’re acting like DISCO and Golden were million sellers, 180,000 copies is not unachievable. It just takes A LOT longer to get there now. As Carol says, let’s see where we are in two years. I also believe Tension will have higher trickle sales than DISCO and Golden.

It’s week 3 of the album being out, let’s just enjoy that and see what BMG & Kylie have planned. There is a lot to celebrate with the Tension era.

Yes it is early days for Tension, but I think it's going to be a really tall order for it to catch up to Disco, let alone overtake it. Even in a couple of years from now. Although I'm happy for people to bookmark me and let me know in the future that I was wrong!

Disco

3 weeks:

1. #1 - 54,919 (including 14 copies sold before release week)

2. #5 - 15,183

3. #10 - 8,885

= 78,987

Tension

2 weeks and 3 days:

1. #1 - 53,237

2. #8 - 5,516

3. Mid #23 - 1,347 (so far) [i can maybe see somewhere between 3,000 to 3,100 being achievable?]

= 60,100 (so far) [i think this could grow to maybe 61,800 by the end of the week]

So by the end of week 3, Tension could be around 17,000 copies behind where Disco was at after 3 weeks. Which is a significant gap! As things stand, it's only going to fall further behind:

Disco

4. #7 - 10,903 (89,890)

5. #19 - 8,267 (98,157)

6. #19 - 6,717 (104,874)

7. #23 - 5,632 (110,506)

8. #33 - 2,410 (112,916) - That was up to the end of 2020 (week 8 = 1st January 2021 chart)

Who knows what weeks 4-8 will hold for Tension. I can imagine by week 8 it'll be 70,000+, but under 75,000. And around 40,000 behind Disco's sales at the same stage.

We didn't get to know Tension's second week streaming figure to compare it with Disco, but Disco was on course to do quite a bit better:

Wednesday 18th Nov 2020 midweek: Disco - 1,450 streaming sales

Wednesday 4th Oct 2023 midweek: Tension - 1,147 streaming sales (79.1% of Disco)

So with its streaming already behind Disco, and the physicals well below, I do wonder about the assertion that Tension's trickle sales will end up better than Disco. We'll see, of course.

Anyway. It's totally fine if Tension never manages to catch up to/outsell Disco, or even Golden. It is what it is, the market is ever-changing.

Thanks for that - love a good stat!

I guess it highlights the shift in market away from physical?

Also Amazon Prime deals started at midnight and I was hoping we’d see Tension part of it but it doesn’t appear so.

Well Disco was released to an Xmas market in lockdown and as i keep saying was very heavily discounted from day 1 and don'y quote me on this, but less album releases due to Covid? + it had an extended mixes vinyl and a Guest List edition

Tension still has to have its Xmas sales, Price reductions, promo and more singles etc,, possible tour, possible new variants plus 3 more years of trickling streaming sales etc behind Disco

Edited by SmileyKylie

Just saw Drakes album sales (I know it’s only on streaming and download) but Tension would’ve beat both that and Ed had they gone head to head!.

Sne will probably be part of black Friday amazon deals buy not this 2 day event

Disco wasn’t heavily discounted from day 1 was it….I have no recollection, what was discounted?

Standard and deluxe CDs were available cheaper later on 2020, HMV etc had pre Christmas sales.

GLE standard CD definitely available for a £5 or whatever early on.

Bigger discounts on the surplus GLE, Extended and ID vinyl came fairly early but don’t ever remember the original Disco vinyl ever being reduced much or at all, most of the variants sold out except the black one. We had the cassette bundle and those signed bundles dropping through the Disco debut week…that’s what drove Disco’s week one sales, not discounts.

Thank you for the stats Jay….the physical market past week 1 is evaporating…..last weeks number 2 out of the top 80 in the midweek, Jorja out of the top 40 from 3 (thought she had streaming fans).

Looking at yesterday’s midweeks there are hardly any new studio albums post debut week, it’s either Taylor, classic albums with multiple streaming hits, or Best Ofs.

I think in week 1 the standard CD was £4.99 on Amazon to match the Little Mix reduction - I don’t remember anything else being reduced.

Love all your facts ❤️

My assumption that trickle sales will be more than disco amd golden, is that I feel single 3 and 4 (and whatever else comes) will be bigger than Discos single 3 and 4. At the moment we have padam and tension but those singles are weaighed down to the album average. Once single 3 and 4 are released, this will bring up the album average, as well as gaining more album sales through streaming. As I think single 3 and 4 will be bigger than Discos, this should then provide higher trickle sales further down the line.

I guess we will see how the streaming is for single 3 and 4 but Tension seems to be holding up better than Discos second single?

All very exciting.

I know my hun

The album market is crumbling in terms of physical and digital. It is such a shame but it is a sign of the times hun.

I am shocked at Jorja and DojaCat though as they were more streaming artists or so I thought but maybe they dont have enough hits from the album yet to counter the downweighting of the 2 or 3 highest streamed songs.

I can never remember if its 2 or 3.
