Posted September 3, 20222 yr This thread is a list of albums released in 2022 that made it into the Top 10 (including reissues of old albums, such as George Michael - Older), with a comparison of their first and second weeks in the chart. It's a way of seeing which albums held up well, and which went into freefall! Note: I've not included old albums that have re-entered or moved up the chart for other reasons (for instance the effect of an artist's death like Meat Loaf's, or a career revival like N-Dubz). September 3, 20222 yr Author It's pretty bleak how most new albums experience very short chart runs. Well over half of Top 10 peaking albums fell straight out of the Top 40 in week 2. Of the 26 #1 albums, only 7 are in this week's Top 100: Harry Styles - Harry's House (This week: #2 / 15 weeks in the chart) Beyoncé - Renaissance (This week: #5 / 5 weeks in the chart) Steps - Platinum Collection (This week: #21 / 2 weeks in the chart) George Ezra - Gold Rush Kid (This week: #24 / 12 weeks in the chart) Bastille - Give Me the Future (This week: #29 / 4 weeks in the chart, 30 weeks old) Paolo Nutini - Last Night in the Bittersweet (This week: #59 / 9 weeks in the chart) The Weeknd - Dawn FM (This week: #99 / 33 weeks in the chart, 34 weeks old) Including the most recent chart, there's been 122 albums that have reached the Top 10 in 2022. If I've counted it up correctly, only 16 of those albums are in this week's Top 100. Only smallll correction is that it’s The Smile! Thanks! I'll edit it. Official Charts Company only have them down as Smile!
September 3, 20222 yr Same could be said for several others where the OCC removes 'The' (The Wombats, The Shires, The Black Keys, The Divine Comedy, The Sherlocks and The Mysterines) :kink: Thanks for putting this together though, very interesting to see these stats after so much discussion about it recently!
September 3, 20222 yr Such a shame albums are this way now and not given a chance to breathe. Not many new artists hanging around either.
September 3, 20222 yr I would be kind of interested to see these stats just for the sales-only chart - I imagine they would be a little bit better but not really that much? It is quite alarming that it's statistically the norm for top 10 albums to drop directly out of the top 40!

September 23, 20222 yr Thanks for these stats Jay! Surprised there are so few top 10 albums that didn't also go top 10 on sales actually (and of the few that did, the majority went to the extreme of not even being top 100). None of the sales #1s of the year beating the old benchmark drop of 'Bionic' then  although oof at Digga D going 2-x (though it's more surprising he got as high as #2 on sales than anything else). Looked it up and Kendrick, like The Weeknd, got a new sales peak with the release of his vinyls and went 3-50. He also went 9-50 in the first and second weeks of CD availability so 3 separate big drops from the top 10 lol (although surprisingly he actually held up pretty well in the weeks between the CD and vinyl releases and is in fact still hanging onto the album sales chart now, currently #80 with 14 weeks on the chart!)
October 3, 20222 yr Author Updated both lists! BLACKPINK have the dubious honour of having the worst collapse for a #1 in the sales chart in 2022, down to #29!
October 3, 20222 yr Such a shame that most albums now are fanbase products and - aside from a few big hitters, usually from long established artists - so few albums now genuinely capture the attention of the general public for a prolonged period to rack up decent sales over time.
October 3, 20222 yr That’s mad how many lower top 10 albums just fall straight out of the charts the next week We are in a culture now where most albums are 1 week wonders. Tbh though I have more of an issue with 1 and our albums. That’s not something to celebrate!
October 3, 20222 yr I wonder how far back we'd have to go to find an album that actually climbed on its second week on the chart!
October 3, 20222 yr November/December 2019 saw those Robbie and Rod Stewart albums released the same week as Coldplay was climb to No.1 in subsequent weeks. There must be a more recent example than that though, perhaps something lower down that's taken off on streams gradually.
