Pop-rock band OneRepublic have been consistent hitmakers of the 21st century, without ever sticking to a formula. A lot of that pop intuition and innovation starts with frontman Ryan Tedder, who began playing coffeehouses in Colorado in the late ’90s with high school buddies including guitarist Zach Filkins. When Tedder moved to Los Angeles a few years later, he reconnected with Filkins and together they formed OneRepublic in 2002. At the same time, Tedder was building his career as a songwriter, eventually writing and producing singles for artists like Leona Lewis, Hilary Duff, and Jennifer Lopez. But when it came to his own band, he’s said his goal has never been to write a hit, only to create genuine works of art: “It has to be a hundred-percent authentic and visceral to my human experience. From his early days playing Chicago house in French discotheques to his long reign atop the pop charts, David Guetta has revolutionised dance music multiple times. Interplanetary Criminal

Interplanetary Criminal’s contribution to the sound of UK garage has not gone unnoticed since his big breakthrough over lockdown. The producer first emerged in the 2010s, releasing a string of bangers merging shuffling beats with rough-edged melodies on labels such as E-Beamz and Kalahari Oyster Cult. Over time he's honed in on the UKG sound, turning heads in even the furthest corners of the globe. The Manchester-born DJ, producer and ATW Records label co-head is helping to further the resurgence of a genre that carries the weight of the UK on its back — a tribute to ‘90s dance music and some of the most prevalent club bangers that had Britain uniting on the dancefloor with its distinctive sound. In a new strain of UK garage, Interplanetary Criminal - real name Zach Bruce - brings that nostalgia back to club dwellers all over the UK, most notably in the city he was born and raised. “I feel like Manchester has always had an amazing scene with so many advocates for UK bass music,” says Zach when we chat to him from his home city. “There’s such an abundance of good music and producers. When One Direction went on hiatus at the beginning of 2016, Louis Tomlinson wasn’t totally sure what he was going to do. Yes, he had his reputation as Sassy Louis, the prankish, arched-eyebrow, smack-talking one, but when it came to the actual business of the band, Tomlinson always felt like the kid at the back. Never mind that he’d co-written more of their songs than any other member, including several of their biggest (“Perfect,” “Night Changes,” “Story of My Life,” “No Control,” “Home”)—the thought of him being out on his own was daunting. So he just jumped in. “It wasn’t as if I’d gone into sessions thinking ‘Who am I gonna be’ at that stage,” he told Apple Music in mid-2020. “I kinda had to learn on the job.”

 

Born on Christmas Eve, 1991, Tomlinson was raised in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, one of seven kids from a Northern, working-class family. As a kid, he did a little acting and had joined a band, but he auditioned for The X Factor in large part because of the encouragement of his mother—a bond Tomlinson held with fierce pride until her passing in 2016. His standout solo singles—“Kill My Mind,” “We Made It,” “Walls”—have all the polish and optimism of 1D, but also reflect Tomlinson’s lifelong love of big, guitar-based music like Oasis and Arctic Monkeys. Before the thumping club hit "Sweet but Psycho" shot up charts around the world in 2018, Albanian-American artist Ava Max almost quit the music industry: "I was like, if this doesn't do it, then I think I'm going to have to pick another career, because I've been at this for 15 years," she told Apple Music. But her perseverance finally paid off thanks to her slinky hooks and sweet-salty delivery that can both sting and seduce with just one syllable. Born Amanda Koci in 1994, the singer/songwriter grew up in Wisconsin and Virginia before trying her hand in L.A., first at age 14 and then again at 17. She spent the next several years handing out demos and getting rejected by a number of labels and producers. But in 2014, she met producer/songwriter Cirkut, who helped her find her voice. Biography

 

“I never really think, ‘OK, I’m going to write a song,’” Lewis Capaldi told Apple Music. “My creative process is basically: I sit down with a guitar and or at the piano, and I just start to write.” But the amazing thing about Capaldi is that he’s become one of the most popular young artists of his generation by preserving his songs in that raw, unvarnished state, to provide the purest representation of the pain and longing coursing through his lyrics.
