September 9, 20222 yr I know Words Are Not Enough is going to be near the bottom A bit harsh! I have always loved it but the other rates for it were baaaaaad
September 9, 20222 yr Author rhXpDLhqlaA 40. Words Are Not Enough | 6.031 Highest Scores: 10: (Herbs), Lowest Scores: 3: (Feel The Fever) 39. Baby Don't Dance | 6.062 Highest Scores: 8: (Aaron, spiceboy, Jay), Lowest Scores: -1: (LM Fan) 38. I Know Him So Well | 6.125 Highest Scores: 10: (Yobnedor), Lowest Scores: 2: (Jessie Where) 37. Dancing With A Broken Heart | 6.156 Highest Scores: 8.5/8: (gooddelta, Aaron, Herbs, Jay), Lowest Scores: 3: (Run For Cover) 36. When I Said Goodbye | 6.343 Highest Scores: 9: (gooddelta), Lowest Scores: 3: (Feel The Fever, Jessie Where) Kicking things off with the bottom ranking Steps single Words Are Not Enough, which was released in December 2001 as the 2nd & final single from their first compilation album Gold - Greatest Hits, alongside 'I Know Him So Well' (which is also in this bunch), making this the group's 5th double a-side release. This in-fact turned out to be Step's final release as they split up on Boxing Day & therefore breaking mine & the nation's hearts. The song is a rather lovely mid-tempo pop ballad, but doesn't quite have the magic that the rest of their ballads have & many including myself felt that this was a rather tepid way to end the imperial phase of the group's careers. At #39 is Baby Don't Dance, the first of the non-single tracks to appear here. This was originally featured on Gold - Greatest Hits & was due to be released as the 3rd single in early 2002, but was scrapped due to the split. The song was again featured on the The Last Dance compilation in November 2002 & given a remix titled the W.I.P. remix & again due to be released as a single to promote said album with the 'Gold - Greatest Hits' tour performance used as the music video, without the group's involvement, but again was scrapped. If this was the original 'GGH' version, then I would have marked this a lot higher, but the 'W.I.P' that was included here, I've never been keen on, with too much going on in the production & the vocals don't feel mixed properly. It would have been interesting to see how this would have fared as a single in early 2002, this would have certainly continued their run of top 10 hits. #38 is I Know Him So Well, the other half of 'WANE'. This spent most of the rate in the bottom position, until it was saved by a 10 score towards the end. The song is a cover of a 1984 song by Elanie Paige & Barbara Dickinson from the Musical 'Chess' written by Benny & Bjorn from ABBA. Steps's version originally featured on the 1999 ABBA tribute album ABBAMania. This is a really decent cover with stunning vocals by Claire, Faye & Lisa and the harmonies are incredible, but overall its a rather dull retread of an already fantastic song & wasn't really needed. Both this & 'Words Are Not Enough' are a rather lacklustre farewell to their glorious heyday & seriously wasn't there anything better they could have paired the original song with. #37 yet another cover drops Dancing With A Broken Heart, which was originally sung by Delta Goodrem in 2012 & released only in Australia. Steps recorded their version in 2017 for the re-release of their comeback album Tears On The Dancefloor - Crying At The Disco, where it was released in September 2017 as the album's 4th and final single. Honestly this isn't a terrible song by any means, but when compared to the previous singles & original album tracks it comes across as rather uninspiring & killed the momentum set up by the first 3 singles. A fun yet very throwaway pop track. At #36 & rounding off this bunch is yet another ballad When I Said Goodbye, released in July 2000 as the 5th and final single from the group's 2nd album Steptacular, as a double a-side alongside a brand new track 'Summer of Love' which would later feature on their 3rd studio album 'Buzz' a few months later. During this time every pop band released at least 1 ballad from an album cycle, (even if no-one wanted it) & Steps were no different. when this was announced as a single the response from fans was pretty muted, but pairing it with an uptempo colourful banger was a smart move as this may have really struggled on its own. However I always thought this was an obvious single choice ever since I heard it on their 'Next Step Live' tour, where it sounded beautiful. I do feel that its far too low on here as I've always found it underrated with its gorgeous stripped back orchestra, stunning vocal harmonies & classy production. This may not be up there with their classics, but its a nice little addition to their discography and shows how diverse they can be. Edited September 25, 20222 yr by Nina West
September 9, 20222 yr Author How have 16.5 voters took part? Excited for the results! Liam.k only rated the first half of the disc and didn't get around to rating the other half.
September 9, 20222 yr Loving the results so far! Words are not enough is a deserving last place it was a tepid way for them to go out I agree.
September 9, 20222 yr I don’t know whether it’s intentional or accidental but I noticed that Loves Got A Hold On My Heart is missing from the list in the first post.
September 9, 20222 yr Baby Don't Dance was due to be released as the 3rd single in early 2002, but was scrapped due to the split. I don’t remember this being confirmed? Baby Don’t Dance being second last feels a bit harsh! I suppose it was unavoidable with that -1. Dancing with a Broken Heart wouldn’t be in my bottom 5 either. I’m fine with those ballads crashing out already though!
September 9, 20222 yr No surprises for me so far, but I expected When I Said Goodbye and Words Are Not Enough to swap places however.
September 9, 20222 yr Dancing With a Broken Heart suffers because all the comeback material up until that point had been pretty much perfect and Dancing is… not. But it isn’t terrible either. Just out of interest, if it hadn’t have been for my 10, would IKHSW have been last/second to last?
September 9, 20222 yr It’s pretty much gone as expected so far. Dancing With A Broken Heart is one of if not my least favourite singles from them so it’s good to see it out early. Also whilst their ballads aren’t as good as their uptempo numbers it’s a shame to see them all out so early. Not unexpected though. No big surprises so far! Surprised that the #40 starts with that score btw. I’m expecting a big jump I. Averages soon.
September 9, 20222 yr Ya I can def see the averages jumping very soon as most of the songs coming are great.
September 10, 20222 yr Dancing With a Broken Heart suffers because all the comeback material up until that point had been pretty much perfect and Dancing is… not. But it isn’t terrible either. I agree with this!
September 10, 20222 yr Author I don’t know whether it’s intentional or accidental but I noticed that Loves Got A Hold On My Heart is missing from the list in the first post. Whoops just noticed that & has now been edited, thanks...
