I actually sent Victoria’s Secret and I won’t lie, I’m miffed by this. There is not a concrete rule that states that entries HAVE to be unknown - it is just stated as being “encouraged.”

 

Edit: I also don’t count a song that isn’t currently Top 40 in the UK as being currently well known. The midweeks hadn’t been revealed when I submitted my entry.

 

There are no other reasons for the song to be vetoed in my view.

The Basics

Every edition of BJSC commences with a confirmation thread. This is when you must submit your desired entry to the host of that edition via the provided link to a Google form.

You may submit any artist/song of your choice, providing it fits the following criteria:

The song must not have been entered into a previous edition of BJSC or a BJSC spin off. A complete list of previous entries can be found HERE.

The artist must not have finished in the top 3 of the previous edition of BJSC.

The song must not be a former entry of the Eurovision Song Contest, or currently be in the running to represent a country at the forthcoming contest. Covers of former Eurovision entries are also not allowed.

Your desired artist must not have been submitted by yourself in the previous contest (i.e. You can't send the same artist twice in a row).

Artists may not be entered more than 7 times to BJSC.

The Details

It is encouraged that you enter songs that are unlikely to be well known to other participants.

Songs can be in any language and can have been released at any time.

Cover versions of previous BJSC entries are permitted if moderators judge the cover to be significantly different to the version that was entered previously.

Songs which sample previous BJSC entries are allowed, but songs which heavily sample previous BJSC entries may be vetoed.

The paragraph just below where you cut that off says that all entries are subject to the veto framework so it is already in those rules.

 

We don't require songs to be completely obscure to the point that no one else will know them but there are limits and I think avoiding songs that are literally currently charting is one of the most reasonable limits of them all!

So an entry needs to fit the entry criteria and escape the veto framework, which, to be clear, isn’t on the big information thread itself?

 

Phew indeed!

All of the relevant stuff is always included in the OP of the confirmations threads (including a link to, or in this case a verbal mention of, the Veto Framework thread) - it may look like a lot of things to remember but at the end of the day as long as you send something that has not already been sent and is reasonably likely to be new to most people / not likely to catch people's eyes independently of the contest you should be fine 99% of the time, the veto framework is just set up to be a quantifiable measure of what kind of songs may be deemed unsuitable for the contest, it's not to try and catch you out on technicalities.

 

(Perhaps the wording of the part you were citing is a little bit misleading but that rules thread was written over 6 years ago and you're probably the first person who's read it in the last 6 years :kink:)

Open question:

 

I know mp3 packs aren’t really a thing now. But does anyone have any MP3 packs from past contests they’d be able to send me? They’d come in VERY useful for an exciting plan I’m currently working on~

 

I always listen to MP3s, so I should still have MP3 files of a lot of songs from since I started. Most of the songs, actually. Although ever since the MP3 pack thing ended, I only keep the songs I like :D So it depends what you want.
