Will Bobby Helms or Michael Buble end up top 5 officially -on Friday's chart - both are tedious but that's the way streaming is going...

Interesting thoughts - but the media and OCC portray AIWFCIY as the UK’s favourite Christmas song constantly, ignoring Last Christmas completely, and therefore are surprised each time Last Christmas performs better than AIWFCIY - despite the fact that it has done so two years in a row now.

As for sexism - have you checked the OCC website? They adore female singers, and Mariah in particular.

Then explain why they gave HER RECORD to Wham and purposefully took her video streamed away and sabotaged her attempts at #1 EVERY YEAR, until Wham were built up as an Easter rival?!

I don't think Mariah being almost 500k above last year shows a decline at all...! (for the record, she's actually up about 40k more than Wham! are year-on-year)

Good point. Comparing with last year, Mariah has closed on Wham! slightly - she had a great start on November 1st - and this was evident in the fact that she reached number 1 in the OC at a point when Wham! were ahead last year. But compared with years 2020 and before, she has lost her shine compared with Wham! On many days, if you compared 2022 with 2020, Wham! are up and Mariah down.

The majority of her 500k year on year increase in streaming appears to be a result of increased (Christmas) streaming on Spotify in general.

It’s notable that in the Official Christmas Chart, Wham!’s lead over Mariah has increased from 2,000 to 3,000 from last year. But the fact that Mariah has dropped 57,000 to 51,000 year on year could be a number of factors - including the potential fact that streaming sales from Amazon may have dropped significantly.

The main point is that for many years it was assumed that Mariah has, and probably would always have the top classic Christmas song. That situation has clearly changed though the media doesn’t seem to have noticed.

And I don’t think many of us thought we’d see the day that Brenda Lee would overtake Mariah. That said, Brenda may well overtake Wham! on Spotify next year.

Did anyone finally receive any answers about this? I e-mailed the OCC and got no response. However, I did look through all sets of figures provided (including YouTube’s data) and calculated that in the Official Chart, correct data would have narrowed Ellie Goulding’s lead from 1000s to 100s, but wouldn’t have changed the number 1 position.

I don’t think any of us were hugely excited by the streaming record set that week (and didn’t someone, maybe Ariana Grande? beat it since)?

It will be nice if Brenda Lee gets a UK no1 eventually if those trends are proven right and it shows that Xmas songs change slowly but do change!

Anyway we all know Let It Snow combined is the most popular Xmas song in the UK 😜

Talk of the Charts on Twitter are suggesting Brenda Lee might finally challenge Mariah for the US #1 next week - I really hope she can get there, feels like she's been on the cusp of it for years now (she's established a pretty big advantage over Mariah on Spotify) but never quite manages it.

I wouldn't mind seeing her eventually leapfrog Mariah and Wham! in the UK as well x

The video streaming chart is frequently full of obvious glitches, it's just a very incompetently run aspect of the OCC. Usually doesn't really make much difference as the overall numbers are fairly low though.

But Mariah had a yuuge new video she was actively promoting!!

Also, Rockin Around The Christmas Tree is a very feel good ssng, but very VERY Americanised. Most Europeans have trees in thr corner or in front of their windows. We don't generally have the yuge houses with space all around the trees. We don't have space to rock sround the entire tree, just like a 1/4 of it

So I asked Alexa to play Xmas songs this evening and it played Wham, Stormzy, Brenda, Mariah and Dean Martin!
Yup!! About right. Aaalways olays Brenda. But ehr song doesn't make sense here! It doesn't make sense!

I thought Mariah didn’t actively promote it??

Omfg THIS!!! Preach Michel Bubre!!! :cheer:

Despite it being in Home Alone it was Mel and Kim's I was more familiar with growing up  I'm glad Brenda has taken the attention back to the better version (Justin's is bad though, soz Joseph :kink: )

Its of course not the same Mel and Kim that did 'Respectable' and 'Showing Out (Get Fresh For The Weekend)' but credited to:

COMIC RELIEF PRESENTS MEL AND KIM PERFORMED BY KIM WILDE AND MEL SMITH

It must have been a parody of the other Mel and Kim. Anyway, I remember encountering it a while ago on the late 80s OCC Chart archives.

Justin's is inoffensive at worst, talk to the wall

The Mel & Kim one is dreadful indeed, I've had the misfortune of hearing it on the radio a couple of times and it makes me shudder

That’s a tune I hear once a year when I watch the cartoon on ch4!
