Do we think Britney stands a good chance of going top 40 this year with 'My Only Wish (This Year)'??? I really, really hope so!

Also love seeing Kelly x Ari so high quite early too!

To survive the saturday stream flop is one thing, to also survive a christmas influx and reach a new peak is incredible. Creepin is maybe a future no . 1 ? It is no. 3 wit. no christmas songs. Would love to see the Weeknd as not just "that guy who had one megahit" instead adda second no . 1 (Just for looks - he's hadtons of hits).

real top 10 (With ACR)

1) Raye

2) Mariah

3) Wham

4) Brenda Lee

5) Taylor Swift

6) Shakin Stevens

7) Ed Sheeran & Elton John

8) Metro Boomin, The Weeknd & 21 Savage

surely at this point The Weeknd has had five megahits? alongside BL - Starboy, Save Your Tears, The Hills, Can't Feel My Face were all massive top 3 hits.

Sure this sounds decent, wouldn't be mad at it going to #1 but only if Raye can get a go there first.

(Also why doesn't Enya get a credit like she usually does )

Metro Boomin's whole album really holding up quite shockingly well on Spotify, these small drops would be impressive even without the fact that they're largely because of surging Christmas songs! 'Creepin'' has also risen to #1 on US Spotify today (it was #2 behind 'Superhero (Heroes & Villains)' yesterday), that certainly seems like it's already shaping up to be a potential big hit in the coming weeks indeed. That Enya sample really does get around.
Fairytale of New York up to #3 on Apple. Obviously #4 when you combine Wham! But still good to see it’s holding up well on at least one platform

if we want to avoid having the same xmas charts every year until the end of time, maybe it's time for oldies to have their own chart? The concept of "sales" is dead these days and playlists are no different from Radio playing xmas songs (and they don't count towards the chart, even though I'd put a large amount of money on more people listening to Elton singing Step Into Xmas on radio 2 right now than the xmas playlists, 8.4 million listeners, err hello!).

Doing this would keep new stuff in the chart and we'd actually get new xmas number ones instead of Mariah and Wham! each year... and end of the day it's no different from deciding to exclude compilations from the artist album chart and give them their own chart. That decision was taken after the invasion of K-Tel and Arcade and Ronco albums dominated the entire top 10 from 1972 and later on in the Now era. Rules are changed all the time in the chart world...

that’s what I’m thinking

anything on permanent acr - plonk it in a “catalogue chart”

if an old song gets a revival from tiktok or whatever then a manual reset can be granted

and then it returns to the main chart

given how the dates fall this year there is a non zero chance that

we have 40/40 christmas songs in the top 40 on the last chart of the year

which would probably incentivise the occ to do something

A lot of people don't like change when it comes to Christmas music. The popular songs are classic because they are tried and true over a period of time and passed down to the next generation. It takes a while for a new Christmas song to be appreciated and recognised as a classic and record companies know it's cheaper to repackage existing classics than to create new ones that will take years to become established, if ever. I don't think LadBaby are there with their 4 x #1. I don't think that will change because most listeners are not interested in seeking out anything new and the OCC shouldn't change beyond ACR because some people don't like what people are listening to. At the same time Mariah and Wham don't block modern artists getting Christmas #1.

This is what last year's 31 Dec chart would have looked like with all permanent ACR songs removed:

01 Ed Sheeran and Elton John ~ Merry Christmas 🎄

02 George Ezra ~ Come On Home For Christmas 🎄

03 Gayle ~ ABCDEFU

04 Olivia Dean ~ The Christmas Song 🎄

05 Camila Cabello ~ I'll Be Home For Christmas 🎄

So that's 3 Amazon exclusive songs that few people even listened to, and for most of those did, not out of choice. At least the current setup is representative of what's actually popular at this time of year.

I don't think the Amazon exclusive songs should be chart eligible either but that's a separate issue
Nice to see Wham! have overtaken Mariah on Spotify. I hope they can also overtake her next week
