It does seem like Jax Jones is losing a bit of his selling power on me. However, he did manage one sizeable hit this year in 'Where Did You Go', assisted by its eurodance influenced pluck and MNEK's vocal ability. It had a rather lengthy UK chart stay, but fell off fairly quickly for me after a fair bit of initial excitement.

Folk duo First Aid Kit did have a new album out this year, however it is their 2014 song 'My Silver Lining' that belatedly got them their first hit single here. Already having been their biggest streaming hit, it was brought to my attention through its use in The Umbrella Academy. It's a very lovely song with its vocals and strings and uplifting lyrics.

The main sellers here for me are Sultan + Shepard, who put out an album last year and are expected to bring another next year.

Former big room producers Firebeatz had an unexpected big hit in 2020 by going fully down the commercial house route with a cover of 'Bad Habit'. They've now recycled the winning formula for a cover version of 'Don't Stop Moving', originally by Living Joy. It's just what you'd want and expect from a modern version of the song staying faithful to the original.

Another older track now, this one actually dating from 2013 but it sounds as fresh as anything put out today, it belatedly became the first hit for electronic producer Emancipator, following its BJSC appearance. An instrumental track, with a great soundscape and strings alongside its trip hop esque beat, it became one of my top discoveries out of the contest during the year.

Discovered as the perfect find for this year's Halloween themed BJSC spin-off (the song won!), it became the second hit in my chart for synthwave producer Hollywood Burns. Complete with a terrifying music video and more screaming than the few rock songs yet to come, it is a brilliantly produced track keeping the high energy and spookiness throughout.

Now this track is widely considered a techno classic and originally dates from 2006 although it hadn't appeared on my radar until now when it got a new lease of life thanks to remixes of it being dropped from Alok/Vintage Culture and David Guetta. It is however the re-mastered version from 2017 that makes it onto this countdown tonight. With a very infectious groove and riff it's easy to see why it would work so well in the club, it's certainly one of the more interesting techno productions I have heard in recent times.

Giving Fever a listen now, sounding pretty nice! It's been a while since I've listened to either Hugel or Quarterhead so nice to give this a listen, a pretty chilled out track.

I don't think I've heard anything off Quarterhead besides their two tracks with Hugel that made my chart - meanwhile Hugel has had a fair few hits for me (mostly the ones featuring Cumbiafrica) - glad you like 'Fever' anyhow.

Making an unexpected official chart comeback this year was house DJ James Hype, five years since having broke with 'More Than Friends'. 'Ferrari' wasn't quite as instant a hit with me, and ultimately never even made my weekly top 50. Its sampled instrumental hook and vocal melody are certainly catchy however helping the song hold up on repeated listens.

A reworking of the 1998 Astrotrax club hit "The Energy" by tech house DJ Martin Ikin, it unsurprisingly managed to far-usurp the stream count of the original version. Despite the title change it certainly has a lot more energy to it in this version, just what we needed to modernise the track. The bassline is particularly meaty and the updated production suits the power vocals well.

Assisting the grand vocals and the storytelling lyrics from country veteran Reba, Dave Audé only went and delivered, keeping all the essential original elements with just giving the production an uplift/update. It also went on to be one of my biggest ever hits in BJSC which was also great to see.

It's been a great year for Purple Disco Machine, having four entries in the Hottest 200. The first of these is an uplifting funky nu-disco tune literally telling you to "Wake Up!". The song is actually a re-working of a 2020 track by Boston-based DJ Bosq, assisted by vocalist Kaleta who is likely to be the first performer from Benin to reach this chart. PDM does little to change the essence of the song but that clearly wasn't needed, the simple energy uplift certainly works here.

Clearly inspired by 'Do It To It's huge success, Tiësto teamed up with Charli XCX for 'Hot In It', a bassy commercial tech house effort. Charli shows again she can work very well on a dance track having had 'Out Out' last year, and the subject matter of having fun on a night out is the focus of the lyrics once more. Whilst it was a very short tune, it didn't feel to me like the runtime needed to be any longer as it said all it needed to in those 2 minutes. Whilst being a fun song, like 'The Motto' it did have a rather quick drop once it finished peaking. Neither performer has any more songs in the Hottest 200.

Haliene has one of the loveliest voices in dance music, which I'm sure helped 'Saving Light' become my biggest BJSC winner back in 2017. Five years later she released her debut album, from which this was taken... kind-of. This is actually a mash-up of her two album tracks 'Butterfly' and 'Metamorphosis', the former a ballad and the latter an instrumental trance piece assisted by Markus Schulz. The track for me works a lot better with the trance backing throughout and the song leading into the two euphoric trance drops. It is the sole entry for both performers in the Hottest 200.

Monocule is the progressive house alias of Nicky Romero, and the new direction here is much more suited to my current music taste as it scored him his first top five hit since 2014. If you like CamelPhat, then I'd recommend giving this a listen. It's also much-helped by the vocal of Leo Stannard who is becoming somewhat prominent in dance music guest vocals now.

It is almost-exactly what you'd expect to hear looking at its song title - indeed being a cover version of 'Sing It Back' over the backing track of 'I Feel Love', given a modern house update of course by Glaswegian producer Kevin McKay. It's a mash up idea that certainly works very well and it deserved a fair bit more attention than it ended up getting. He has been going since the 90s but this ended up as his first real hit here.

The first of three entries for French trio Bon Entendeur. This was their biggest hit from their 2019 album 'Aller-retour', however I only discovered it following a chance find of "Alba" (this will appear much higher up the list) and a scour through their back-catalogue. As you'd expect this is sang entirely in French and in fact samples a 1971 recording by Isabelle Pierre. The old-timey feel of it is left in so it's a rather unique track in terms of modern dance music.

What a year it was for French composer/producer Worakls. If getting two #1 hits last year seemed impressive, this year he managed three consecutive #1 hits. The most recent, and hence lowest, of these in the rundown is 'Sparkle'. If all you recall from him is 'Storm' from BJSC, well this is rather different to that, being faster in tempo, about the speed of a DnB record. Right from the start with the drum pounding it has a real sense of urgency. It's very classical/orchestral-based too, continuing to make his work sound very unique in the context of my chart. This also really sounded great live, with the Worakls Orchestra being the most recent concert I attended.

Another rock-adjacent song now, this time from Texan instrumental band Polyphia. It was taken as the lead to their fourth album however I hadn't heard of them beforehand. It's got a bit of an electronic/trap influence to it however the main focus is on the expertly played guitar solos and drumming. Certainly an interesting piece and one I reckon would've done better than "ABC", the song later sent to BJSC where it DNQed.

It's a fun dance track with a bit of a cheeky vocal, and he'd clearly been taking some production tips from Purple Disco Machine too.

Hot In It and Cold Heart are big faves :wub: the former is my favourite that I've heard from this Tiesto era, though I do like 10:35 and The Motto too (and I think I heard Don't Be Shy once and quite liked that)
