A report card for Robyn Rihanna Fenty, first issued by a school back in Barbados’ Saint Michael parish and later reprinted in a giant coffee-table book called RIHANNA, stated, in part, that the young Fenty was positive, sure of herself. She took a leading role in group activities. Most of all, she had ideas and seemed comfortable expressing them. It’s hard to think of many artists in 21st-century pop who could match the vulnerability of Sam Smith. “I’ve never shied away from telling the truth in my music,” the singer told Apple Music in 2020. “Music is literally my best friend; it’s a release, a form of diary and therapy.”

 

Born in London in 1992 and raised in Cambridge, Smith first began gaining significant traction in 2012 with a pair of dance hits—Disclosure’s “Latch,” and Naughty Boy’s “La La La” the following year. They revealed that elastic falsetto, but didn’t quite hint at the sadness that would define the outrageous success to come. That arrived with 2014’s Grammy-winning In the Midnight Hour, an exquisite meditation on unrequited love, and its followup, the heartbreak-inspired The Thrill of It All. This second album saw Smith—by then an Oscar winner for 2015’s Bond theme “Writing’s on the Wall”—open up about instant fame and embrace their status as a gay role model, against a backdrop of stirring, gospel-infused balladry. It has always been clear that Smith’s power lies as much in that voice as in an unwavering bravery to put their innermost feelings—loneliness, confusion, desperation, desire—on full public view.

 

By the run-up to album three, however, Smith was also ready to have a little more fun. The aching melancholy of love, loss, and yearning for someone to spend their days with was still present, but this time, it was all being mined for invigorating music to help dance the blues away. That third LP should have arrived in early 2020 in the form of To Die For, but, amid the global pandemic, it was delayed, reworked, and renamed with the more sensitive title Love Goes. The album, Smith said ahead of its release, allowed them to heal after their first true breakup. But it also heralded freedom. “I felt at one point that I was going to be trapped onstage wearing a suit and singing ballads for the rest of my life,” said Smith. “When I look back at Love Goes, it reminds of the courage it took. A lot of my life, probably because of a lot of internalized queerphobia, and queerphobia around me, I felt ashamed of myself and not being able to fully be myself through my music. Kim Petras

Kim Petras has spawned an entire generation of bunheads (as her fanbase is called) with her brand of hook-heavy, hedonistic synth-pop. Born in Cologne, Germany in 1992, Petras had aspirations of international stardom from an early age, writing her first songs at 13 and inspired by pop stars like Britney Spears and Spice Girls. Though she released minor works in the late 2000s, it was 2017’s “Unlock It,” the singer’s attention-grabbing collaboration with scene queen Charli XCX, that served for many as a gateway into her world. Petras' Era 1 collection of endorphin-popping bangers, elevated by her virtuosic vocal range, solidified her status as pop music royalty. Songs like 2017’s sugar-baby anthem “‎I Don't Want It At All” and 2018’s criminally catchy “Heart to Break” showcased her singer/songwriter prowess through a neon glow of ‘80s-infused dance pop. An indie artist at heart, Petras has released the bulk of her work on her own BunHead Records imprint. Her official full-length debut, Clarity (2019), found her eschewing some of the blithe spirit of her early songs in favor of a greater vulnerability in songs like “Icy” and “Broken,” where materialism becomes an escape from the emotional void of heartbreak. The hyper-sexualized Slut Pop arrived in 2022. There’s a lovely moment a little ways into Apple Music’s Songwriter documentary about Ed Sheeran in which Sheeran, jet-lagged and carrying a cup of tea, straggles out into a yard in Malibu at dawn, sits down at his laptop and begins writing a song about the moment right in front of him: the crisp air, the birdsong, the hot tea, the day ahead. He gets a full verse in, melody and all, then pauses. “Songs are weird things,” he says. “How so?” an interviewer asks. “They just come and go,” Sheeran says, smiling. “And they never give you any warning.” For Sheeran, they seem to come pretty reliably. Born in 1991 in Halifax, England, he started out gigging on the UK pub circuit before releasing his first studio album, +, in 2011, and has since become one of the most unstoppable singer-songwriters in music, forging a light blend of folk, pop, hip-hop and dance that feels slick but lived-in, intimate but universal. Whether on his own (“Sing”, “The A Team”, “Shape of You”, “Perfect”) or in collaboration with artists from Taylor Swift to Eminem to Justin Bieber, Sheeran has a unique ability to strike a chord that feels both bittersweet and redemptive, good-natured and genuine: the hopeless romantic who convinces you he might just be right. Elton John

At the height of the fever dream that was Elton John’s life in the ’70s, the singer-songwriter had the optician Dennis Roberts design a pair of giant, sculptural glasses studded with 57 battery-powered lights in the shape of the name Elton—to the tune of about $5,000. Adjusted for inflation, you’re talking about something more like $25,000. But John had a show to put on, and wouldn’t that be something to talk about?

 

The excess was always apparent: the rhinestones, the costumery, the old Hollywood glamour retrofitted for a new, gender-bending world. But beneath the feathers, John’s music—written with the lyricist Bernie Taupin—was direct and unpretentious, the kind of rock ’n’ roll storytelling that met you where you were. Even if you didn’t know exactly what it meant—who is the dancer, and why are they so tiny?—the feeling was immediate, universal. By 1973’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, John said they were writing a couple of songs at breakfast and recording them before lunch. This was pop music, John argued: You weren’t supposed to think about it too much, and god help you if you did. And yet here we are, singing the songs five decades later.

 

Born Reginald Dwight in Pinner, England, in 1947, John took to the piano young, studying on a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music while obsessively listening to Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard. They were so physical, John marvelled—they didn’t just play the piano, they beat it. He started playing in pubs at 15 and, around 20, met Taupin through a want ad in a music magazine.

 

There were good years and bad ones, highs and lows—that handful of Valium before jumping into the swimming pool in 1975, for example, or the disco album, which John himself described as jumping on a dying bandwagon—but he has always endured, emerging from the debauchery of the ’70s and redefinitions of the ’80s bruised but never beaten, a gay icon, AIDS activist, philanthropist, Knight Bachelor, and father of two. In 2018, nearly 50 years after his debut album, he embarked on a three-year farewell tour, and published his first autobiography, Me, in 2019. Sadly without a featured credit many won’t realise that they’re there!

 

Counting production credits, Jacob Collier already had a Top 40 with ‘Good Days’ btw ;)

I assume Ed & Elton will be on ACR in a couple of years.

Away from all the noise of his various successes – 3 UK top 5 albums incl. the platinum-selling, chart-topping Long Way Down; 2 top 10 singles; a 2013 Brit award for Critic's Choice – there's one thing that's always kept Tom Odell grounded: songwriting. A classic songwriter - awarded a prestigious Ivor Novello for Songwriter of the Year in 2014 – relied on his passion more than ever when it came to crafting his new pop-leaning, emotionally-healing fourth album. The whirlwind around his debut had kickstarted a work ethic that became an obsession that culminated in crippling anxiety, leading to a dark period of mental health that stalked most of Odell’s 2018 and 19. If this doesn’t get a reset after Xmas, it will definitely get one on 3rd February due to the album effect

 

What would be the point of giving a reset to something that has already reached #1 and naturally declined to ACR a month before just because it's a post-Xmas chart?

 

I'm also unsure how big the Sam Smith album effect will be given Unholy relied on TikTok advance promotion for it's initial momentum.
