December 6, 20223 yr Sam Ryder would’ve been a contender for Xmas #1 if he pushes his album back a week. Even if he does get #1, he won’t hold on to get Xmas #1. So many albums released this Friday but no major albums being released next Friday There are Xmas postal dates and it’s not a big deal to have Xmas #1 album…

December 6, 20223 yr It's not just the iTunes reviewers but the music critics have also been (rightfully) critical of Olly's album The Arts Desk - 1/5 The Telegraph - 1/5 The Irish Times - 2/5 Clash - 4/10 This quip from The Arts Desk is my fave "The lyrics are so utterly at odds with the giddy, lightweight music, it’s as if an AI pop song generator has malfunctioned." I've only heard one song, think it was called hate you when you're drunk or something like that, it was so jarring the upbeat music with lyrics you might throw at a partner during a fight. Very odd.

December 6, 20223 yr Olly struggling is a shock. It is a reflection of being away from the pop game for four years - you lose your place. Yes he's been in rehab etc. but he has clearly prioritised The Voice over his music career! so a reflection on that, both singles are OK not anywhere near his best most catchy and have struggled to gain momentum.
December 6, 20223 yr Olly Murs is trending on my twitter but not for anything good  The press are still talking about the song lyrics and people are complaining about unsigned albums. HMV have dropped the price and added 4 more signings “because he’s so popular” (which go live tomorrow?) so maybe he is super popular or maybe things aren’t looking great… you decide :D Everything Sam Ryder and Warner Music have done since June 15th is for album pre-orders so it’s just another thing. Sam said he won’t play the streaming game but he manages to connect with his fans in other ways. I have a feeling George Ezra will gain a little on albums this week.
December 6, 20223 yr Really happy to see Amazon working its magic for once with Lizzo's "Someday At Christmas" - really enjoy the song. Hopefully it'll manage to go top 10 or even top 5 in the coming weeks.
December 6, 20223 yr I don't get the hate for Olly's song lyrics. I don't think they come across as misogynistic at all. I'm sure we all know people that act like idiots when they're drunk, and I know I can definitely relate to a lot of the things he says in the song  Anyway I wonder if the negative publicity will actually get people to seek out the song and give it a few extra streams? December 7, 20223 yr It all seems a very 2020s thing to be constantly outraged at everything and this is especially the perfect example with this Olly Murs song. Even his fiancé comes onto defend him and tell people to chill out! If only we all had the high standards of anonymous people on social media Edited December 7, 20223 yr by Christmasteve201
December 7, 20223 yr I don't think it's the most problematic song in the world but I also don't think you can just throw a song out that can be perceived as demeaning to a woman and expect it to be immune to criticism. Most people are simply criticising the lyrics and not cancelling Olly himself so it's not that big a deal, the song's not going to be a hit so it'll fizzle out in no time. It's not being "outraged at everything", it's just expecting better of someone who's put out a questionable track. (I've not heard the song myself but have read the lyrics and I think we've seen much worse lyrics in the chart this year *cough* Central Cee *cough* but can completely see why people don't like them, they're not exactly complimentary of the subject of the song)
December 7, 20223 yr Thousands of songs are not complimentary of their subject. I've not even heard the song but I looked up the lyrics and with the minorest of alterations you could feasibly have a woman singing the same song about a man. Another Twitter generated story about nothing for the tabloids it seems.

December 7, 20223 yr I think it's all a publicity stunt nobody is interested so creating a bit of controversy helps
December 7, 20223 yr Nothing would have been said about Olly if Self Esteem hadn’t publicly criticised him.
December 7, 20223 yr It goes back to the ‘Baby it’s Cold Outside’ issue - art will create criticism which of course is fine but what’s the point in ‘cancelling’ people. Those who want to cancel just want to censor. As Bjork said it’s probably been done on purpose to create talk about an album campaign which isn’t going well!

December 7, 20223 yr Wham still No.1 on Spotify yesterday. I think Ed Sheeran/Ed will overtake for No.1 by Friday.
