Posted December 11, 20222 yr Do you think ‘The runner’ should’ve been released as the Platinum Collection second single? I’m going to say no in the end. ‘Hard 2 forget’ wasn’t their strongest release in my opinion and this track is in the same league for me. It also wouldn’t have changed the run of the PC I think.

December 11, 20222 yr I put maybe...meaning that if it got a remix /edit treatment as in its original form, it could do with some work as the track feels very rushed. Now I did like the track upon the album's release, but after a few listens, I went off it & found the production rather lacking. I still find 'The Runner' a better song than 'Hard 2 Forget', however neither of the tracks are up there with most of the other classics on the album.
December 11, 20222 yr I’m not saying Hard 2 Forget is a masterpiece but it’s miles better than The Runner. I doubt I’ll return to the latter at all.

December 11, 20222 yr After months of letting them settle, neither was a vintage Steps song for me. I prefer The Runner but neither that or Hard 2 Forget are anywhere near my personal top 100 songs of the year and Steps rarely miss that with any single.
December 14, 20222 yr I disagree, i thought it was a fairly good cover although i wasn't familiar with the original at all.
December 14, 20222 yr I feel like 'The Runner' is a perfect song for them but the end result of what we got here is really badly executed, it sounds immensely cheap and poorly produced. If it was a bit meatier sounding and more bombastic (like 'To the Beat of My Heart's production for example) it might have been better. Bananarama did a much better version of it a few years ago which is more like what their version should have sounded like: js9R1I_JkcA
December 14, 20222 yr The Bananarama version so have more punch but vocally i prefer the Steps, i always think the vocals by Bananarama are really crokey for some reason as i usually dont find that with them.
February 15, 20232 yr I think the runner fits in very well on the platinum collection, probably a song that will forgotten quickly by many but im still really enjoying it.
