Michael Andrews and Gary Jules - Mad World in 2003

Rockabye and Perfect (imho) are genuinely good songs too, but had been out for a while before Christmas.

Not worthy contenders for the accolade.

I whole-heartedly disagree :P

If we're going explicitly by the criteria specified then for me it would be Ed Sheeran's Perfect. One of his better ballads.

I think I would have to agree that is a harrowing song that I distinctly remember for being a genuine Christmas #1. It was one of a kind at the time and if I remember rightly managed to throw off some stiff opposition for Christmas #1 too. Wasn’t The Darkness close that week with their Christmas song?

Of the last 20 years...

Rockabye was probably the last one that was in the regions of being good

Mad World was a great Christmas Number 1 and great song/ version in general.

Shout out to Sound of the Underground - bop!

Pre that... 2 Become 1, Always on My Mind, Don't You Want Me and Bohemian Rhapsidy are all great too

Oh ok sorry, so please Dobbo tell me what you would choose to include as your last decent Christmas #1!

I like Rockabye but I want to give a shoutout to RATM because without that rebellion in 2009 we would still be subjected to the hellish The X Factor.
'Rockabye' out of recent years and then 'Mad World' before all that. I don't mind Rage but I didn't love that one or anything it was just iconic for the battle.

Yup big sellers that week -

Mad World 227k and The Darkness 222k!

Always forget it was that close. I was fully team Darkness at the time but both are great tracks.

I discounted Killing In The Name as a "re-release", although technically speaking it wasn't. That and the three I mentioned above are the only ones I've particularly cared for this century.
