I'd say my signature sound is quite dark, alt and synthy but my winners have been feel-good eurodance and house

so, I guess lightening up and dipping into more accessible corners of the dancebloc in my case :P 'A Neverending Dream' has a fun dance-pop melody and 'Ignis' builds well into a pretty satisfying dancefloor drop. Neither of them were hyped as winners in advance though, or won by much, so I'm still not used to the obvious, runaway winner feeling in the main contest.

Many answers, but a familiar theme. It’s not a secret I guess, but the skill is in finding that one song that many will aspire to send and makes Cody say he wishes he had thought of sending it instead of his chosen entry. :kink:

I’d quite like to see a new debut winner soon, it feels like a while since someone won for the first time. I can see a few countries tipped for some major success in the near future, and I hope they get their moment to shine!

I’ve decided to hype Yobnedorica next contest and see if I can manifest a new peak for them, so their entry better be a good one. ;)

Also I was so close to spending Confidence Man in 2021 but Wow73 beat me to it and won, that’s the only time I came close to confirming a winning entry!

I think Yobnedorica is getting the idea of the contest tbh and would not be surprised to see them take the crown soon. Mae Muller is probably their closest guess as to what the usual BJ crowd likes so it kinda baffles me that it finishes that low, but something similar in the next few contests could hit the right spot I believe.

Kluminican Republic is unlucky with some of their entries in general. No Romeo, Don't Pray For Me and Madeline are pretty close for me. I hope 2023 will be the year for them x

D'yermak'er actually comes close too. I think they had a couple that was hyped to win which didn't happen in the end. I could imagine their BJSC 150 entry winning in other editions, so they are onto something and I hope 2023 will be the year for them too x

I would really love to see an unexpected winner next year. Orihime is probably the proof that if a niche entry is supported by a loud minority, you could challenge for the win. Maybe we are due for a winner like this x I'm thinking of Terra Avium and Cumulonimbia in general actually

It’s been a long time since I won but…emotion has always helped with my entries. RAMelia won and Lost Without You only lost on a tie break. For maybe the only time ever, RAMelia I went in with thinking ‘this is a winner’. The heart and passion and story behind it and the sonic change in the production was so epic that I was certain about that, check my own odds threads from that contest  nothing I heard in the rest of the field persuaded me otherwise.

Freya also had that heart and emotion in a different way. Sometimes standing well out of the field - and not in a vote alienating way like some of my schlager or choral entries! - does pay off but it is riskier than just sending a big, catchy, well produced pop song, which will almost always be eaten up.

My 2011 and earlier winners are from another time so it’s hardly worth mentioning them but Sheelah for example still had that mammoth pop chorus that still does well today. Others would come nowhere near winning in this day and age. Time and trends can help a song on its way, and hype of course! Although that can also have the opposite effect if people feel something has been overhyped.

I mean while I can’t speak from experience, of my five medalists, three of them (Steven Wilson, Highasakite, Thomas Bergersen) all came close/would’ve come close to the veto, granted La Phaze and Owsey were pleasant surprises. I think as much as we’d like to think otherwise, familiarity and coming close to the veto helps a lot. Not that there haven’t been some totally inspired, out of nowhere winners, but I find they’re rare exceptions.

I think pop and dance are so dominant as winners just because they have the biggest core fanbases from our current voters make up, the more ‘indie’ sounding songs and more niche genres tend to be a toss up in terms of appeal so there’s just not enough support to go all the way.

I do think we are probably the most diverse we’ve ever been taste-wise certainly in my time here, but so many different genres can cancel each other out against the familiar ones.

yes come to think of it, being uninspired does help as all my winners had past form for doing well – Gareth Emery had a previous top 5 hit, Two Steps From Hell had a number of past entries and were the closest I ever came to getting vetoed and Worakls had already won another forum contest. although I suspected I was onto a hit with these I've never entered a song expecting to be a viable winning contender.

Yeah with the niche entries every one of its target voters pretty much has to love it to stand a chance. And even then it’s unlikely that would ever take a niche song past 300 points anyway, so they have to rely on close months to maximise their winning potential. On months when there is a big pop song like Holiday or Thunder in the pack, they’ve got no chance.

There are probably around 25 pop dominant countries and 20 more that will frequently feature pop songs high in their votes, compared to maybe not even 15 that rarely vote for the any of the big pop songs. So if you want a win, look for a great big pop song - but don’t do it on the same month everyone else had the same idea or they’ll all cancel each other out. The perils of BJSC, things are often so reliant on other factors to actually achieve a win!

Including me not overhyping a pop entry ;) ;)

Thanks for the hype but remember you lot didn’t vote for it so it’s your own fault it finished low!

I’m not salty I promise xoxo

Altyr‘s winning formula is take a respectably placed Áskorzjan entry and enter their new single 🙃

Given that my winner are both foreign language I feel like I have the opposite formula to success but that I managed to align the planets and strike lucky
