Biography

Sometime around the end of 2010, Sia Furler hit bottom. She was exhausted, numb, self-medicating. She’d had some success, but the trade-off—touring, promotion, life without privacy—felt too steep. She thought about suicide. Then an idea came along: Why put so much of herself on the line when she could just try writing for someone else? Even after coming back to the stage as a solo artist, Furler maintained a degree of playful detachment: The big wigs, the reluctance to show her face. But the music was real, empathetic, even heroic—anthems of vulnerability and self-empowerment that handled huge feelings with a lightness that made it seem like she was dancing slightly above the ground. Pop songs are fantasies, she seemed to say. But they also get us through.

Born in Adelaide, Australia, in 1975, Furler started out singing in a local acid-jazz band called Crisp before moving to London, joining the trip-hop group Zero 7 while starting a solo career. Her early albums—off-kilter pop with hints of folk, electronica and jazz—did fine, but it wasn’t until she started writing for other artists that her career took off. Beyoncé (“Pretty Hurts”), Britney Spears (“Perfume”), Katy Perry (“Double Rainbow“), Rihanna (“Diamonds”): Furler’s writing made for some of the most bright-lined, all-caps pop of the 2010s, while her own tracks (“Chandelier”, “The Greatest”, “Alive”, “Unstoppable”) set new standards for playacting in pop performance, making her—a queer woman whose self-professed higher power is a surfing, Santa Claus-like figure called Whatever Dude—not just a songwriter, but also a kind of oddball role model for anyone who’s ever felt like they didn’t quite fit in. She said a producer once claimed that it wasn’t fair for her to be able to turn out a song in 20 minutes and get the royalty split she did. Maybe so, Furler clapped back—but getting to those 20 minutes took her 15 years. - Apple Music

it was a fun battle last week with the sidemen going up against ladbaby, but doesnt stop it being quite an annoying song

Nice new peak for Snowman but a shame it was skipped!

The Sidemen song is the most tolerable of the 4 Top 10 new entries from last week for me! :P

Edited by JulianT

Are the only changes to the top 40 songs since Wednesday that the 3 lowest Amazon songs were replaced by SZA, Rema and Bugzy then? (Was predicting maybe Taylor instead of Rema but otherwise as expected pretty much). Pleasantly surprised at Rema being ahead of Bugzy, hopefully top 5 next week!

Pleased that Nat King Cole and Coldplay indeed both held on (forgot Coldplay were so far off last year! back to business this time), and nice to see Bing and The Jackson 5 sneaking in too, plus a good new peak for Kelly/Ariana.

Sidemen were the Christmas Number 1 on the commercial radio Big Top 40.
i like darlenes version (ik shes the og) but i prefer michael bubles version. its the only one of his christmas songs i actually like

I prefer the U2 version.

Anti-Hero definitely isn't here then - can't see how it would have fallen behind Calm Down and Out Of Nowhere if not on ACR.

Biography

Slade are an English rock band formed in Wolverhampton in 1966. They rose to prominence during the glam rock era in the early 1970s, achieving 17 consecutive top 20 hits and six number ones on the UK Singles Chart. The British Hit Singles & Albums names them the most successful British group of the 1970s based on sales of singles. They were the first act to have three singles enter the charts at number one; all six of the band's chart-toppers were penned by Noddy Holder and Jim Lea. As of 2006, total UK sales stand at 6,520,171, and their best-selling single, "Merry Xmas Everybody", has sold in excess of one million copies. According to the 1999 BBC documentary It's Slade, the band have sold over 50 million records worldwide.

Following an unsuccessful move to the U.S. in 1975, Slade's popularity in the UK waned, but was unexpectedly revived in 1980 when they were last-minute replacements for Ozzy Osbourne at the Reading Rock Festival. The band later acknowledged this to have been one of the highlights of their career. The original line-up split in 1992, but reformed later in the year as Slade II. The band have continued, with a number of line-up changes, to the present day. They have also shortened the group name back to Slade.

A number of artists from diverse genres have cited Slade as an influence, including Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Undertones, The Runaways, The Clash, Kiss, Mötley Crüe, Poison, Def Leppard, Twisted Sister, The Replacements, Cheap Trick, Oasis, Quiet Riot (who covered Slade songs for two of their three biggest hits) and Britny Fox. The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Music tells of Holder's powerful vocals, guitarist Dave Hill's equally arresting dress sense, and the deliberate misspelling of their song titles (such as "Cum On Feel the Noize" and "Mama Weer All Crazee Now") for which they became well known. - Wikipedia

Sidemen were the Christmas Number 1 on the commercial radio Big Top 40.

the big top 40? yeah its not exactly an accurate chart :kink:

Are the only changes to the top 40 songs since Wednesday that the 3 lowest Amazon songs were replaced by SZA, Rema and Bugzy then?
Yep!
Anti-Hero definitely isn't here then - can't see how it would have fallen behind Calm Down and Out Of Nowhere if not on ACR.

Yeah I thought someone had 100% confirmed it avoided but maybe they didn’t and if its downloads increased last week its streams could have fallen.

Coming for a 12-87-4 run then or something!

2025 is the next time Xmas falls on a Thursday. It hasn’t fallen on a Thursday since the charts moved to Friday. As Thursdays streams normally go missing, it will be interesting to see the chart then

The missing Thursday streams issue may have been resolved by then.
