Not particularly a fan of that TTD song on first listen, it's no Sign Your Name- sorry dandy.

U Got 2 Let The Music is a tune! Definitely on the good side of Eurodance.

The Captain Hollywood Project song is a new discovery me and sounding pretty good.

The PM Dawn song just makes me want to listen to Father Figure  Liking the Tasmin Archer song though.

Praise You is of course fantastic!

I feel like the Lightning Seeds are largely seen as a bit NAFF, and the constant titting around with Frank Skinner probably doesn't help

But "Marvellous" is as uplifting as 90s pop got. They really did have some fabulous moments - "Sense" and "You Showed Me" are up there too

Erasure in the early 90s - AMAZING. Erasure in the late 90s - MUCH MUCH LESS SO

"Run To The Sun" and "Fingers And Thumbs" are definitely the post-"Pop!.." highlights

Praise You is great but When You're Gone is a big big favourite!
Looking forwards to this, suspect there will be some I'm unfamiliar with which I will definitely give a listen to.

It's actually a very mainstream list on the whole, my knowledge of music didn't extend too far past the weekly top 40. I'll be trying to note the songs that were kept from #1 as I go along though as there are many classics that I love now that I just didn't appreciate at the time.

Despite this I'm aware of knowing very few of these so far, so have added 10 songs onto my playlist of random stuff to listen to whilst working today!

Praise You is a fab record, though my preference was always Right Here Right Now (that topped my chart) - When You're Gone topped my chart at the time, though, and I still prefer it to Praise You, though both are top notch.
I was never a fan of Praise You. The piano reminds me of something off a Primal Scream.

Some more of these songs that I need to check out but whaaat at 'Praise You' ranking this lowly! Well at least it was a #1 for you but that's probably up there with my favourite dance songs of the 90s.

I don't think I've heard any of the other songs since my last post (maybe Cappella but I don't immediately recognise from the title) but the Bobby Brown and Mory Kanté songs are both tunes, and of course 'Informer' is a classic so that PM Dawn song better be good if it kept it off. (Their one big hit is a song that I kind of respect for being unique but I don't really love it)

I am starting to wonder if anyone did already know about the Afrika Bambaataa thing before me ruining him oops! I think it was me that brought it up when he was in Club Bizarre too

I knew :) I thought everybody knew too :D

250 | Madonna - I'll Remember

Another artist who was bound to crop up at somewhere... and I'm pretty sure this will be a track that nobody hoped would appear... HOWEVER I don't care as this is a song that has so many special memories attached to it for me. My girlfriend (back in the days when girls were a viable option) and I met in 1990 and we used to listen to Crazy For You at exactly 9pm together so that we both knew what the other was doing and we would think about each other every night. Well this song replaced Crazy For You when we decided this could be a new romantic song to listen to in our mid teens to continue the trend without it getting too repetitive. Adorable eh?

So now is probably the time to confess that I only listened to Crazy For You about twice at 9pm because, y'know, it was more of a girl thing to do and I quickly figured out that as long as she thought I was doing it that it didn't matter if I did or not. Yep, as unbelievable as it sounds I was actually kinda blokey back at the age of 11. However by 1994 I was totally a modern man and I listened to I'll Remember at 9pm at least 3 or 4 times. And, more romantically for a chart geek, I placed it at #1. True love guys, true love.

249 | Kim Appleby - Don't Worry

A trip back to 1990 is up next and therefore we're going back to songs I used to like as a 10-11 year old. Don't Worry was the debut single from Kim Appleby, one half of the PWL iconic act Mel & Kim. Sadly it was Mel's death (RIP) at the ridiculously young age of 23 that forced Kim to go solo and, within the context of production values of the time, this was a pretty catchy debut single and one that I loved enough to make it rule my chart for a week in 1990. I'm listening to it now for the first time in a VERY long time and I can see why I enjoyed it, it's catchy and really upbeat... indeed it would be suitable as a London Boys single!!

always liked I'll Remember to from Madonna, Don't Worry is nice enough, very SAW-esque without being a SAW song, agree kinda sounds like a London Boys lost song :D

Don’t Worry is gorgeous  . Unjustly forgotten.

Very cute relationship story Dandy. :)

awww how sweet :) I've never done anything like that in my life :o I have, however, rather rated I'll Remember way more than Crazy For You (and bought it) and Don't Worry is a terrific pop classic of 1990 and it should be much higher up the list. I was 32 in 1990 and not influenced by being 10 or 11 years old. I was, however, feeling immensely sorry and melancholy for Kim over the loss of Mel and the song still makes me sad-upbeat at the situation she was in, losing your younger sister is just devastating and to come out of it so positive is uplifting. Also, co-written by the forgotten Bros (husband Craig Logan) and better than any Bros song and half the SAW tracks of that period.

(PS Being Boring was the best new record around, though, along with Wicked Game, till Sadeness and Crazy popped out, with Dont Worry and Step back In Time slotting in just behind. All great! )

That's interesting PCF, I'd not really considered before that it was such a cheery and uplifting way to come back from her sister passing away. I don't think I was old enough to fully appreciate how traumatic it would have been for her. Either way, I'm pleased to see a few people appreciating the song as I really wasn't sure how well Don't Worry would be received on here.

248 | James - Born of Frustration

Next up it is the only song from James to top my chart and I think it was the lead single from the Seven album. This is one of the earliest examples of a guitar based indie song that really connected with me and it is arguably the first one to make #1 for me... there was one song in 1990 that could be counted but it's more of a remix. At the time this reminded me of Alive and Kicking by Simple Minds, one of my favourites from the 80s, and that undoubtedly helped it on its way here. They had managed to chart previously with Sit Down but that really didn't connect with me anywhere near as much and indeed it's still a track that I think is quite overrated. I don't have a great deal to say about this one, it's good but not a huge fave in retrospect. The cover art to the single is lovely though, my favourite one so far.

The Dixie Narco EP by Primal Scream is the primary new entry in the UK this week that I didn't know existed at the time. Movin' On Up was the lead from it and of course everyone knows that these days so I've linked you to the track 'Screamadelica' which oddly didn't feature on the album of the same title. It's a 10 minute jam and is very much of the style of the album, I can only assume they decided they had enough long jams on there already.

247 | Erasure - Am I Right? (Remix EP)

Moving a few weeks earlier than Born of Frustration and we find Erasure yet again topping my chart. This was solely a remix EP of tracks from their Chorus album but I was obsessed enough with them that even a remix single spent a couple of weeks at the top for me. I particularly loved both the remixes of Am I Right? and Love To Hate You, with The Grid and LFO respectively taking them on to represent the current dance movement. This is the only time that a remix EP topped my charts, not allowing for new versions of tracks that were released in entirely different sections of the decade. I still think the Grid's remix is one of the very best mixes of an Erasure song, although it doesn't quite match the bleak synths of the original version.

Unlucky to run up against Erasure at the peak of my love for them, we had Old Red Eyes Is Back entering one spot behind at #2 for The Beautiful South. It's rare that the return of a bands I loved were up against each other like this and it was the #2 single that finished higher on the end of year chart but sadly it never quite toppled either this (or a returning #1 that we'll see much later on) during January 1992.

246 | Stereo MCs - Step It Up

Third #1 in a row to fall from 1992. This was their biggest hit by far on my chart but ends up pretty low down here primarily because I've barely listened to it since... I would be saying that I hadn't listened in decades however it was played in one of the recent album chart rundown sessions in the chart forum so I heard it on the synctube session then. The band were considered pretty cool at the time and were being really hyped, I did buy the album but I never really cared for it outside of the 3 main singles.

Talking of tracks that have been discussed recently, looking back through the OCC site reveals this was the week that Leftfield's Song of Life entered the chart and it is of course these days my favourite song from the chart. Interestingly both the #2s that were stopped by it did better in the end too and I listen to and enjoy both of those more these days also.

James is a band i like but don’t love, never bought a single or album

I think I prefer their other leads like Sit Down, Sometimes or Shes a Star

Am I Right I kinda liked it, the 4 singles from Chorus were all great

This is not really @1 material though

Step it Up is a big favourite, loved it back in the day, easily their best single

Loved Moving in Up from Primal Scream too
