Just checked and yes it is easily the best. Really not a vintage year for chart toppers.

Terrible.

'Let Me Be Your Fantasy' is one of my mum's favourite songs so it's practically injected into my veins  a fab chart-topper indeed!

Yeh ‘Let Me Be Your Fantasy’ is a great number one!

Love all the versions of ‘True Faith’ fantastic song. Think by the early 90s the general public realised how fab New Order were! Remember hearing the original on TOTP 1987 and think it sounded so modern for the time like Brit pop!

I have been in love with True Faith since 1987. I think it is the song I have in the most places in my collection. I think I have it in 13 different places over cd , cassette and vinyl.

love True Faith too, I still remember seeing the video in 87 as a kid

much better than the over.rated Blue Monday :o ;) :)

I would say that it's better but the first 60 seconds of Blue Monday is my favourite opening 60 seconds of any song.

Proud owners of the Real McCoy album unite!!! ;)
I bought it! I remember it being firmly in the 'not bad considering it's a euro dance album' kind of effort

3RD DECEMBER

It sped out of the starting blocks topping the midweek charts but in the end the new Stone Roses faded too fast allowing Baby D’s “Let Me Be Your Fantasy” to score a second week at No 1. Its sales were up by 14% to 84,000 bringing its total to just under 200,000 in 21 days, not bad for a song that flopped the first time around.

Onto that new Stone Roses single then, as noted it easily moved into an early lead when the week began but “Love Spreads” ended up trailing in at No 2 (58,000) which must be a disappointment for them. The much heralded second album “Second Coming” is out in a fortnight so we’ll see if it lives up to that rather grandiose title. At any rate the single becomes their highest placed yet so it can be considered a success for the band.

Louis Armstrong improves 97% week on week to surge 5-3 (55,000) and may challenge Baby D next week, his rise means that (MC Sar &) The Real McCoy fall 3-4 (53,000), and Pato Banton trips 2-5 (43,000).

Written by Tony Mortimer about his late brother, East 17 sees them stray into ballad territory for the first time as a single. “Stay Another Day” powers in at No 7 (38,000) the third time in a row that they’ve arrived at that position, apparently they only added sleigh bells as a last minute decision for the festive market, wise boys. The album “Steam” only made No 4 and has fallen week on week but now steadies at No 32 in response. This is the boys 6th top 10 single in just over 2 years, a record that means they really are the only challengers to the boyband crown currently held by Take That who aren’t going for the No 1 spot this year after the disappointment of 1993.

Jimmy Nail climbs 8-6 (43,000) as his album slides in at No 17, but all heading south are Sheryl Crow 4-8 (29,000), M People 6-9 (23,000) and Bon Jovi 9-10 (18,000). This week sees Cliff Richard & Phil Everly, Mariah Carey, and Whigfield will be welcomed to the charts next week as the race heats up!

10TH DECEMBER

20110515-033145-689111.jpg

The story of the charts this week isn’t really who’s No 1 it’s the monumental error that occurred at Millward Brown in relation to data received from Woolworths. Every day the computer at Woolworths HQ dials the stores electronically and downloads info from all stores, collates, then sends onto Millward Brown, in this particular instances the HQ computer called each store twice and on occasion three times which resulted in triple counting sales in some instances which all became clear when Millward Brown returned to the office on Monday. The computer at MB is trained to spot duplicate sales if they are sent in twice by an individual chain but has no facility to double check chain store collations before it receives them hence the wrong chart being announced on Sunday. It doesn’t result in many changes in the top 10 thankfully but the effects were much greater further down when the chart was re-run on Tuesday.

East 17 claim their first UK chart topper this week as “Stay Another Day” shoots 7-1 and pushes album “Steam” up even more impressively from 32-10 which could prove troublesome for them if they want to stay the course until Christmas. Sales of the single leapt by an incredible 156% to a mighty 97,000 which sends out a clear warning to other Xmas contenders, it also signals their move into the major league of acts and means that in the battle of the boybands they can finally boast a chart topper! The boys have reshot the promo for the song as they are apparently rather unhappy with the original one!

Moving from 58-55 this week on the album charts is “Merry Christmas” by Mariah Carey, it’s rather low key sales and chart position might mean that the project won’t be a roaring success but then Christmas albums tend not to be, the single pulled from it however is! “All I Want For Christmas Is You” debuts at No 5 (35,000) her 7th top 10 on the trot. It was one of two records in the top 10 to change their chart position when the chart was re-run as this was announced at No 6 on Sunday and ends up gaining a position and swapping places with “Another Night”. It comes with two different promo’s to cover all angles and shows that the record label is pulling out the stops to enable Carey to score the Xmas day No 1 and she co-writes the song should ensure Carey royalties for years to come.

From one big voiced diva to another, Celine Dion smashed earlier this year with “Power Of Love” which made No 4 but follow up “Misled” scraped into the top 40 and her UK chart career looked to fade especially when the parent album “Colour Of My Love” went in at No 10 but was out of the charts 6 weeks later. It will be getting re-promoted for Christmas after a third single “Think Twice” has proved quite the slow burner having moved 53-42-52-30-28-22-20 so far, it comes from the pen of Andy Hill and Pete Sinfield who are most famous for their Bucks Fizz compositions though they were last in the top flight as writers on Cliff Richard’s “Peace In Our Time” last year, Dion’s climb 20-9 (23,000) gives her a third top 10 single and comes with an ice sculpture featured promo.

Formed as an “Irish Take That” the boyband war hots up with new comers Boyzone, a five piece from the emerald isle whose first release, a cover of the Detroit Spinners 1980 No 1 “Working My Way Back To You” made No 3 in their native country, have now been unleashed on this country with yet another cover, this time the Osmonds 1974 chart topper “Love Me For A Reason”. The song was written by Johnny Bristol who’s big hit “Hang On In There” was remade into a top 5 hit by Curiosity two years ago, as for Boyzone they are apparently heading into the studio to record a debut album early next year, “Love Me For A Reason” however gets off to an excellent start debuting at No 10 (22,000) beating a rival version by As We Speak into the charts. Their star turn on the Smash Hits roadshow saw them voted best up and coming band a few weeks ago which can only have helped.

Baby D fall 1-2 (64,000) while Louis Armstrong continues to improve in sales if not position as he holds at No 3 (62,000) and almost overtook the outgoing chart topper at the death. Jimmy Nail has a third top 5 single with “Crocodile Shoes” lifting 6-4 (55,000) and (MC Sar &) The Real McCoy continue their slow descent 4-6 (31,000), Pato Banton’s former No 1 drops 5-7 (28,000) and Stone Roses prove to be a one week wonder sinking 2-8 (28,000). Anyway next week the chart compilation will be less eventful hopefully and more about the records themselves with bookies favourites Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, Madonna, Rednex, Black Duck and Bon Jovi all entering the fray!

1- STAY ANOTHER DAY- East 17 (97,000)

2- LET ME BE YOUR FANTASY- Baby D (64,000)

3- WE HAVE ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD- Louis Armstrong (62,000)

4- CROCODILE SHOES- Jimmy Nail (55,000)

5- ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU- Mariah Carey (35,000)

6- ANOTHER NIGHT- (MC Sar &) The Real McCoy (31,000)

7- BABY COME BACK- Pato Banton Ft Robin & Ali Campbell (28,000)

8- LOVE SPREADS- Stone Roses (28,000)

9- THINK TWICE- Celine Dion (23,000)

10- LOVE ME FOR A REASON- Boyzone (22,000)

i was the biggest Stone Roses fan with their first singles and their debut album

songs like Made of stone, I wanna be adored, Fools gold, She bangs the drums, I am the resurrection

but Love Spreads was such a let down and the album was even worst

This is Sirius! Think Twice is very good and nostalgic especially the iconic NO NO NO NO! bit

I suppose 'Love Me For A Reason' is a bit nostalgic too!

Edited by TheSnake

didn't know Boyzone had a hit in Ireland prior to Love me for a reason, surprised they didn't release it in the UK
Watched that TOTP double yesterday, lol hearing 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' twice during a sweltering day

I had the windows open while watching Fri night and wondered if my neighbours might think I’d gone insane

2x Mariah, 2x Stay Another Day, Power Rangers, Cliff…what a couple of episodes! That’s the pre-Christmas 90s charts for you.
