February 3, 20232 yr Author 5TH FEBRUARY http://www.derrydaily.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Peter-Cunnah-590x350-300x177.jpg The final Gallup produced chart contains nothing much new with D:Ream ending an era which started back in January 1983 with Phil Collins’s “You Can’t Hurry Love” at the top. “Things Can Only Get Better” is now in its third week at the top as it tops the 200,000 mark by selling a very healthy 81,000 copies almost double the 47,000 that Toni Braxton’s “Breathe Again” sold in its charge 7-2, clearly it will have to go some to make that final step. D:Ream’s achievements are all the more impressive as their album is re-issued and debuts at No 5 nearly 40 places higher than it made last year. Z_UlpVX9cLI Bryan Adams/ Rod Stewart and Sting continue atop the US charts but slide here 2-3 (47,000) despite increasing sales again, they almost lost their top 3 placing as Enigma shoot 9-4 (47,000) in a very tight part of the chart where under 500 copies separated numbers 2 to 4, K7 complete the top 5 as they fall 3-5 (35,000). “The Power Of Love” was of course a 5 week chart topper and the best selling single of 1985 in the UK on its way to selling a million copies and becoming one of the top 10 best selling singles of the decade. For all of that it stiffed outside the top 50 in the US where the highest charting version of the song before this year was the No 26 version by Laura Branigan in 1987. That may help to explain the current version by Celine Dion and why it’s doing so well stateside (No 3 at the moment). It has now become top 10 here for a second time in 9 years as it saunters 20-7 (28,000), it simultaneously becomes her biggest UK hit as it goes 2 places better than her only other UK top 10 hit “Beauty & The Beast” in 1992. Dion’s album “The Colour Of My Love” is out next month. j-dqWY29xWI Going strong for ten years, it was Red Hot Chili Peppers decision to sign to Warner Brothers in 1990 that started to generate record sales for the group, their last album “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” provided them with their biggest single, the No 26 hit “Under The Bridge”…until now. Also from the same album “Give It Away” was the lead track from the album but bombed when released in 1991, since then its grown into a fan favourite and gets a second chance becoming their biggest hit debuting at No 9 (23,000) and causes the album to re-enter at the dizzy heights of No 66! Mr_uHJPUlO8 Elsewhere Tori Amos falls 4-6 (31,000), Culture Beat relent 6-8 (24,000) and Haddaway holds at No 10 (22,000). 1- THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER- D: Ream (81,000) 2- BREATHE AGAIN- Toni Braxton (47,000) 3- ALL FOR YOU- Bryan Adams/ Rod Stewart/ Sting (47,000) 4- RETURN TO INNOCENCE- Enigma (47,000) 5- COME BABY COME- K7 (35,000) 6- CORNFLAKE GIRL- Tori Amos (31,000) 7- THE POWER OF LOVE- Celine Dion (28,000) 8- ANYTHING- Culture Beat (24,000) 9- GIVE IT AWAY- Red Hot Chili Peppers (23,000) 10- I MISS YOU- Haddaway (22,000)
February 3, 20232 yr Author 12TH FEBRUARY It loses 24% in sales but D:Ream’s “Things Can Only Get Better” grabs a fourth week at the top as its sales swell to 331,000 proving that the album (which moves 5-7) is eating into sales. It will almost certainly lose its crown next week to Toni Braxton who holds at No 2 (54,000) and is eroding their lead at just the right rate. Enigma also climb 4-3 (45,000) but actually lost sales and seem to have faded at the critical point, Celine Dion is a much better option, she’s up 7-4 (40,000) and should place easily in the top 3 next week, it’s doing even better in the US where it hits the top! V6QhAZckY8w A No 15 single in 1992 for producers Clivilles & Cole they’ve teamed up again to produce a cover (not too dissimilar to the original) for Aretha Franklin whose version of “A Deeper Love” appears on the forthcoming film “Sister Act II”. It’s Franklin’s biggest hit in 7 years and with only her 1968 No 4 track “I Say A Little Prayer” going higher in her solo discography. A new best of will follow from Franklin later this year but her rebirth as a dance star seems to be assured on this evidence with this track asserting itself at No 5 (36,000) P7wCrjuTIyo Coming to attention after singing with Michael Bolton at a benefit concert, Wendy Moten was signed up and produced her debut album which was helped promotion wise by supporting Bolton on his world tour last year. She feels the benefit here with her single “Come In Out Of The Rain” shooting 22-8 (23,000) to launch her career in some style. lzFjZ7McdnY Arriving at No 9 (19,000) are Reel 2 Real which is a recording name for DJ Erick Morillo, and his hit “I Like To Move It” features vocals by The Mad Stuntman (real name Mark Quashie). The song hasn’t overly troubled the airplay charts but is a hit nevertheless and contains a sample of Sylvester’s “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)”. x0GJRFAIGbQ French Duo Deep Forest first promoted “Sweet Lullaby” about 10 months ago and has become an established track in certain ambient circles. Its mix of electronica and world music has now been remixed by (among others) Apollo 440 for chart purposes and is based around a traditional Soloman Island folk song, it’s already been top 20 in France, Australia, and Switzerland over the last 18 months. ATmBOnMJJkE Bryan Adams/ Sting/ Rod Stewart drop 3-6 (25,000), and K7 slide 5-7 (25,000). 1- THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER- D:Ream (61,000) 2- BREATHE AGAIN- Toni Braxton (54,000) 3- RETURN TO INNOCENCE- Enigma (45,000) 4- THE POWER OF LOVE- Celine Dion (40,000) 5- A DEEPER LOVE- Aretha Franklin (36,000) 6- ALL FOR LOVE- Bryan Adams/ Rod Stewart/ Sting (25,000) 7- COME BABY COME- K7 (25,000) 8- COME IN OUT OF THE RAIN- Wendy Moten (23,000) 9- I LIKE TO MOVE IT- Reel 2 Real Ft Mad Stuntman (19,000) 10- SWEET LULLABY- Deep Forest (19,000)
February 3, 20232 yr Give It Away  It seems almost crazy that Celine didn't make a proper huge breakthrough until 94/95, it seems like she's been around as a major force for a lot longer than that.
February 3, 20232 yr The 12th Feb episode was the best TOTP rerun I’ve seen since I’ve been watching these when they were on 1986. For 3 reasons: Elastica at 20 with Line Up - the first Britpop song on TOTP! The wonderful Linger from the Cranberries An exclusive from Suede with the beautiful Stay Together
February 3, 20232 yr Author 19TH FEBRUARY Dramatic happenings in the chart this week as a new entry debuts at No 1 and for the first time in chart history it belongs to a female solo act! Yes Mariah Carey writes herself into UK chart history as her cover of the Badfinger song “Without You” sold an impressive 76,000 last week to sweep all competition aside. It was doubtless helped by the approach of Valentine’s Day in its sales, the single is the third release from her “Music Box” album which is itself back in the top 3 and marks Carey’s first chart topper. Her UK success still lags well behind her US Chart trajectory where 8 of her 11 releases have made number one and this single has now entered the top 10 there, expect it to climb further! The song was of course more famously a chart topper in 1972 for Harry Nilsson who died tragically of heart failure just last month, his version has been re-issued to mark his passing and enters at the less illustrious No 65 this week. cWvcfaUOFxY Everything else in the top 5 drops a place to accommodate the new arrival, D:Ream dip 1-2 (47,000), Toni Braxton suffocates 2-3 (45,000), Enigma dissolve 3-4 (42,000) and Celine Dion is powerless as she falls 4-5 (42,000). The real winner out of those are Enigma who see their album “Cross Of Changes” debut strongly at No 1. Cappella are on a roll at present with a third straight top 10 single, “Move On Baby” appears this week at No 7 (37,000) and will be a big money spinner for the group if only because it is an original composition unlike their previous two sample heavy hits. The album “U Got 2 Know” is out in a fortnight and will evidence whether they can make dance music sell in the album format. 1d2Rva0fFcQ 2 Unlimited’s last single “Let The Beat Control Your Body” is also a new entry at No 9 (22,000) making up for the disappointment of their last hit “Maximum Overdrive” becoming their smallest hit to date when it peaked at No 15. It’s a fifth cut from the “No Limits” album which has established the duo as one of the biggest acts of the last year, the pair have reported almost completed their third album which will be available in the summer. All but two of their 9 singles thus far have made the top flight, an enviable rate by any one’s standards. 67hP99qH-Tg Aretha Franklin ebbs 5-6 (40,000), Bryan Adams/ Rod Stewart & Sting sink 6-8 (26,000) and Reel 2 Reel are down 9-10 (22,000). 1- WITHOUT YOU- Mariah Carey (76,000) 2- THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER- D:Ream (47,000) 3- BREATHE AGAIN- Toni Braxton (45,000) 4- RETURN TO INNOCENCE- Enigma (42,000) 5- THE POWER OF LOVE- Celine Dion (42,000) 6- A DEEPER LOVE- Aretha Franklin (40,000) 7- MOVE ON BABY- Cappella (37,000) 8- ALL FOR LOVE- Bryan Adams/ Rod Stewart/ Sting (26,000) 9- LET THE BEAT CONTROL YOUR BODY- 2 Unlimited (22,000) 10- I LIKE TO MOVE IT- Reel 2 Real Ft Mad Stuntman (22,000)
February 3, 20232 yr Author 26TH FEBRUARY Mariah Carey had an easy week of it helped by the hype of breaking chart records which saw “Without You” sell 109,000 copies a new high for the year. You’d think that the album may be neglected with the single doing so well but on the contrary it leaps 3-1 to top the charts for the first time since it was released last September enabling Carey to be the first female solo act to pull off the double since Madonna 5 years ago. The most famous version of the song by Nilsson meanwhile climbs 65-49. Hat1Hc9SNwE Whilst no-one was anywhere near Carey this week indie darlings Suede’s new single “Stay Together” was making the running in the No 2 position for most of the week before failing at the weekend and entering at No 3 (36,000) after it was overtaken at the death by D:Ream (38,000). The single is not taken from their debut album and has been touted by some sections of the music press as pretty much the best thing in some years and justifies the hype by becoming their biggest single to date. Expect their second album by Christmas. Incidentally the 71,000 that separate the top 2 is the biggest margin since Whitney and Michael Jackson fought it out at Christmas 1992. ywEraPLrXT8 http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JgCcWVWv9_s/TuxL6TZFv3I/AAAAAAAAALQ/FD1SpEWlmHw/s1600/group_hn_32.jpg Ace Of Base have struggled here after the huge success of the 600,000 selling “All That She Wants” last year which made No 1 for 3 weeks, follow up singles have peaked at No 20 and No 42 and the group seemed to be confined to the one hit wonder pot of chart history. They have however managed to become a big hit in the US where the song made No 2 at the end of last year and now have a follow up single “The Sign” reach the same position there this week being held off by Celine Dion. That’s caused another surge of interest here in the song and with a record label smelling sales they’ve withdrawn the album with a view to relaunch it after the giving the single a push and it dutifully debuts at No 7 (29,000). 4Yv1Wt_A6Qw Enigma hold at No 4 (36,000) as Toni Braxton falls 3-5 (30,000) but Bryan Adams/ Rod Stewart & Sting reclimb 8-6 (30,000) as the film hits our cinemas. 2 Unlimited must be unhappy with their modest improvement 9-8 (26,000) and similarly Cappella head straight down 7-10 (24,000) whilst Celine Dion slides 5-9 (25,000) but as noted is the current US chart topper and has her album out this week. 1- WITHOUT YOU- Mariah Carey (109,000) 2- THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER- D: Ream (38,000) 3- STAY TOGETHER- Suede (36,000) 4- RETURN TO INNOCENCE- Enigma (36,000) 5- BREATHE AGAIN- Toni Braxton (30,000) 6- ALL FOR LOVE- Bryan Adams/ Rod Stewart/ Sting (30,000) 7- THE SIGN- Ace Of Base (29,000) 8- LET THE BEAT CONTROL YOUR BODY- 2 Unlimited (26,000) 9- THE POWER OF LOVE- Celine Dion (25,000) 10- MOVE ON BABY- Cappella (24,000)
February 3, 20232 yr I hadn't realised Suede were so close to #2 or even moreso Enigma on that first week at #4, nor that Nilsson had a re-release of Without You to coincide with Mariah Carey's version!
February 3, 20232 yr Things are really moving with classics now - Stay Together and The Sign in the top 10!
February 3, 20232 yr Aretha Franklin, Deep Forest and Suede are big faves from the recent updates
February 4, 20232 yr Wow I never knew that Mariah's version of 'Ken Lee' 'Without You' hit #1 so soon after Nilsson died. I'm assuming that's just a crazy coincidence as I imagine the Mariah release must have been planned more than a few weeks in advance?
February 4, 20232 yr Ken Leeeeeee tulibu dibu douchoo! Didn't realise Suede were so close to #2 either, pity they missed out. :(
February 4, 20232 yr nice to see both Enigma and Deep Forest simultaneously in the top 10 Kinda liked Mariah's cover back in the day, not so much nowadays sure it was a crazy coincidence, in the US it was released as a single much earlier than in the UK, like 1st or 2nd week of Jan I think Edited February 4, 20232 yr by Bjork
February 4, 20232 yr The Sign <3 the year had some big sellers coming very early on here with that, Mariah and D:Ream. Annoying that TOTP haven’t played the wonderful Return to Innocence yet, such a brilliant track and cool to see it top ten at the same time as Deep Forest indeed. The Mariah song is far from one of my favourites from her but kudos to her for getting a No.1 debut. Also weird that the Celine cover did so well in the UK, as it’s so similar to the original that wasn’t even that old really.
February 4, 20232 yr Return To Innocence had a video play the week it entered. Sweet Lullaby didn't get a play though - the higher-placed Give It Away and A Deeper Love had video plays instead on the weeks it entered and climbed.
February 4, 20232 yr I can’t recall Enigma ever being on TOTP. I guess they were a difficult act to have live
February 5, 20232 yr I bought both Enigma and Deep Forest albums, fab they were and I was really into World Music, as it was called, around that era. Ken Lee wasn't so much a cover, more a late night mugging... :teresa: I would forgive her entirely by christmas 1994 though :o
February 5, 20232 yr too bad Enigma never got another top 10 after this Despite releasing many great singles (Gravity of love, Eyes of truth, Beyond the invisible)
February 6, 20232 yr Didn't realise Suede were so close to #2 either, pity they missed out. :( I never knew this either, that really is a bummer!
