January 8, 20232 yr @1612174652763426817 Yep, very worrying, one thing I learnt recently was that apparently the biggest supporters of Bolsonaro are millennial males 😞
January 8, 20232 yr Bolsonaro and Trump really are two peas from the same pod (even though peas aren't usually orange).
January 8, 20232 yr It's almost like electing populist, far-right fascists is dangerous as it will appeal to and empower those hateful beings in society that don't believe in democracy who have no problem resorting to violence to actually take action, if only we knew this... Horrible scenes, can only hope he can disappear quickly so this can be put to bed.
January 8, 20232 yr Well at least security forces have appeared to stop the situation for now which is a relief. Not at all surprised this happened though - and the fact Bolsanoro is in the US currently all sounds fishy. Hope these rioters get long jail time.
January 9, 20232 yr :') I was relieved the other day to realise I had completely missed the news that Lula had been sworn in as I assumed that meant we had avoided something like this happening. Nevermind, too good to be true...
January 9, 20232 yr Bolsonaro needs to be extradited from the US and stand trial in Brazil for sedition. Hardly surprised, more needs to be done to keep people from supporting these kinds of leaders. Yep, very worrying, one thing I learnt recently was that apparently the biggest supporters of Bolsonaro are millennial males 😞 Also not entirely surprised, that group is quite prone to believe narratives of a 'promised prosperity' being stolen from them with apparently nefarious to blame.

Agreed although wonder what just can be done - presumably these supporters (and their kindred spirits in other countries) get a lot of their information from the internet especially dodgy social media. Other than wholesale censorship of the internet which would cause major issues in itself, the brainwashing of many of the population by actual fascists, chaos agents, divide and rule media figureheads is a problem which is only going to increase. Proper punishment for these figures like Trump and Bolsanoro would be a start - yes it may encourage martyrdom but I think one of the reasons the far right is so strong is that no one has the guts to stand up to them.
January 9, 20232 yr Lovely narrative. Violence and chaos in the name of freedom of speech and democracy. Now recount those votes goddamnit, this time democracy was wrong, let's fix that real quick with some violence because we cishet males think that all issues can be resolved by destruction and intimidation as it's the only thing we are good at. Or better, let's wreak havoc and get it out of our system and have nothing fixed in the slightest. In fact, we're making it worse for both us and everyone else. But who cares, as long as we can destroy some government official's desk - this'll show 'em!!1 Edited January 9, 20232 yr by כן

Punishment seems like a very short-term solution. Trump and Bolsonaro will just get their martyr status and it will even further convince many that they were right and are now being silenced, etc. etc. The left needs much better charismatic representation, they should call Trudeau and ask for some advice.
January 9, 20232 yr A lot of this spreads also in mediums that are beyond the reach of social media such as WhatsApp (a huge platform in places like Brazil and India) and on services such as Telegram/Signal. That makes it considerably tougher to try and formulate any form of crackdown on misinformation as these services kinda exist beyond the scope of the national legislations designed to control social media. And of course some are controlled by figures that have shown they don’t particularly care about regulators and are generally supportive of the aims of these people as they’re backed by hostile state actors (eg Twitter and Telegraph and arguably to some extent Meta). The true irony here for me is that there is actually a shadowy organisation trying to control and manipulate elections, these people are just too thick to see they’re the pawns and they’re the ones being used by a network of fascists seeking to overthrow democratic government in the „west“. Brexit-Trump2020-Bolnasario-Orban-Querdenker/Reichsbürger they’re all deeply interconnected and flush with money from hostile state actors. They all have the same aim to permanently tilt the scales in their favour and will use whatever willing idiots they can find to do so. Any minor grievance is overblown to such an extent that it becomes a social issue and they hijack anything and everything to further their illegitimate aims. (See the Young NFL player Damar Hamlin who had antivax f***faces crawling all over any coverage of his Cardiac Arrest within seconds) The only way to really start tackling this that i see is through de-radicalisation pathways. There does have to be some investigation into some of the social media algorithms as Facebook, TikTok, and especially YouTube, are known to have massive issues when it comes to algorithmic radicalisation. Ultimately the deplatforming of misinformation and the altering of these algorithms is helpful in my mind as you have to stop the flow firstly of new people into the radicalisation pathways. Target the disaffected before they have a chance to truly start buying into what these people offer them as the „solution“ to all their issues. This also has an offline element too, ensuring people have good quality jobs and living standards that remove the economic situations in which these charlatans flourish It’s a very challenging issue I think, with no one silver bullet and a long long and tough road ahead to a solution.
January 10, 20232 yr Punishment seems like a very short-term solution. Trump and Bolsonaro will just get their martyr status and it will even further convince many that they were right and are now being silenced, etc. etc. The left needs much better charismatic representation, they should call Trudeau and ask for some advice. No, I do think there needs to be crackdowns, the Americans missed their chance to throw anyone involved with the coup out of political life. The 'election stolen' narrative isn't good electorally long-term, as we saw in the 2022 midterms, but that it wasn't truly punished among the elites who washed their hands of their involvement has led to it to become the norm for right-wing leaders to do this. I think that Lula and his base across Brazil are probably in a better position to do all of this than Biden was though, and the right within Brazil will also be strongly encouraged to dump Bolsonaro, especially since he's fled the country. I think Musk's tweet 'The woke mind virus must be defeated or nothing else matters' is a great encapsulation of how these people are thinking - that it causes them to reject democracy, reject trust in institutions, all for the wrong cause, targeting societal changes rather than wealth inequality. Also, the thing is, Lula is the charismatic representation for Brazil - he's one of the country's most popular politicians in history, probably the only person who could have beaten Bolsonaro's cult. But, speaking broadly as I'm not as familiar as I'd like with how Bolsonaro's popularity spread, misinformation and media biases, conservative society (Lula is opening up society to 'undesirables'), you have a lot of people who are radicalised to see what should be their saviour as the devil that Brazil needs to be saved from.
