I guess turning a #2 into a #1 with CDs like with Before You Go, or turning a Too 20 into a Top 10 like with Celestial, felt on a different scale to turning something that would be nowhere near #1 into a #1 like with Pointless. That’s why it felt a bit unprecedented, not that there was necessarily anything wrong with it.

I do think the record company being able to roll up CDs ordered over several weeks while a single is already available and then have them all credited in 1 week is slightly unsatisfactory as the chart is meant to reflect sales / consumption within 1 week and the man on the street would say those sales weren’t all in the same week. But hey ho.

but actually that was 100% what itunes was doing with pre-orders back in the day, you would accumulate pre-orders for weeks even months and then all counted for week 1.
RAYE is ahead combined.

I do think Miley could continue to increase and snatch it though!

Such an exciting week, mainly because I love all songs in contention for the top spot. I am rooting moreso for Miley - what a beautifully triumphant return <3 I too think she's only going to grow (excuse the pun) and get it this week or next!

Fingers crossed she does. She ain’t had a #1 for 10 years

Almost an all female top 6 (give or take a goddard.) in this First Look!

Miley definitely looks to have a lot of momentum on her side with the big 2nd day rise on Spotify and rising to #1 on Apple today so would not surprise me if she does snatch #1 by the end of the week at this rate. Oops SZA looking destined to end up with a #3 peak again now though - even if it never really had much hope of #1, I was really hoping for #2 so it'd at least outpeak 'Kiss Me More', ah well.

Yay at Metro Boomin being top 10 today albeit not nearly comfortably enough.

Surprised you all like the Metro Boomin track, what's the point of doing a nearly identical cover of the Mario Winans track

without adding a thing? at least Enya gets more $$$ for her pension fund.

Similar, but not exactly the same. In these cases, the song wasn't (usually, especially pre-streaming era) available elsewhere. In a 'sales' model, it's completely fair game, in a 'consumption' model, probably less so.

(ok, maybe not completely fair, having all songs OA/OS would leave the least room for manipulation)

This is where it gets messy though: if pre-orders should count when the person orders the CD, what happens if they cancel their order in a later week? What would be the point in ACR if OCC are trying to measure exactly how popular a song was each week?

The fact is, OCC will never discourage dubious loss leading single releases in this era. They like a fresh looking number one. More number ones makes the chart more marketable, and if someone has to release 22,500 CDs that may or may not have been sold to achieve that, all the better (in their eyes)!

More reasons why I don't think the current hybrid consumption/purchasing model really works... But I won't go into that again. 🤣

I loved going into HMV or Virgin in Oxford Street London, used to sell the imported cds and have big stickers over them. Spent most my money on cds back then.
I’m expecting RAYE to still be #1 in todays update but with Miley close behind

I think it's a lot better than the original (better production, better singer, better rap feature) but even if it was identical what exactly is wrong with enjoying covers?
