January 16, 20232 yr thanks for filling in bre. does my entry count as an obvious sample then I wonder or are there some even more blatant samplings here? (the drum beat is an almost-copy of “Teardrop” if anyones wondering, but the rest of the song is entirely original) glad you’re already a fan of it anyhow, I found the song whilst looking for club bizarre entries funny enough but the artists don’t fit the brief of that contest.
January 16, 20232 yr Interesting how an “I Will Survive” sample doesn’t get vetoed… There quite literally was a song a few contests back that sampled the entire acapella of My Neck My Back (just pitched down) and didn't get vetoed! I don't quite understand all the caveats of what makes a sample useable in the contest, but I'm always gonna try my luck :teresa:
January 16, 20232 yr I’m just gonna copy my response here as I had a feeling this discussion would come up, as it did for us: Yeah, samples are a sketchy one, but I think there's factors to consider. 1) How notable is the artist sent? 2) How popular is the sample? 3) Does it use it in a different way to the original? If it ticks only one of those boxes, I'm not too fussed. A quick listen of the track, it bares little resemblance to the TATU original and Coldabank aren't particularly known. In both of the instances we've vetoed (Tensnake and Leah Kate), the former ticks two of those boxes due to Tensnake's previous entries and the latter honestly ticks all three. I'd say the same for After Like, though it's definitely close to pushing it. Obviously you guys may disagree but this was my personal take x
January 16, 20232 yr It generally depends on how the sample is being used. Is it a straight rip, is it like Leony - Faded Love where it’s the melody that’s sampled but you have totally different text. Is it using the original vocal. Is it a lyrical sample There are so so many different moving parts and we consider each on its individual merits. Samples are still a very popular way of making music, more so in some genres than others, and we do our best to take a judgement on each in turn.
January 16, 20232 yr My entry this month is very much a sample and it is credited in the song title too. Thankfully it was not deemed veto worthy despite its vintage retro vibes. I assumed it was ok because FSR Rontvia sent a sample of Super Mario Bros in a previous contest last year.
January 16, 20232 yr I won't be joining any listenthroughs this edition unless one is hosted tonight for SF1 :)

I assumed it was ok because FSR Rontvia sent a sample of Super Mario Bros in a previous contest last year. Not that it matters but just nitpicking, the 'Super Mario Bros.' entry was quite a lot longer ago than last year, it was almost 6 years ago :kink: Unless you're talking about the 'Dire, Dire Docks' sample, which was in Club Bizarre rather than BJSC (and is from Super Mario 64 not Super Mario Bros.)! (I don't think the theme your song is sampling is even 10% as recognisable as the SMB theme anyway, it was not of any concern!) Also @ Dan I actually didn't ever realise that 'Blue Hour' was so similar to 'Teardrop' somehow! Although it's not a credited sample anyway so no yours wasn't one of the ones I meant.
January 16, 20232 yr If you have to post that you're getting ready to complain, you have no right to complain xx Also would just like to reiterate this ~ Yes samples can be a grey area and not everyone will agree where to draw the line (hell, we disagreed within the mod team on several of the sample based entries this month!) but please be assured we do actually consider these things and have reasons for why some sample based songs are more or less acceptable than others. I nearly wanted to veto 'After LIKE' too but not because of the sample, I just thought Travis was slightly missing the point replacing his vetoed current global K-Pop hit with a slightly older (and actually more successful ddd) global K-Pop hit. But tbf LE SSERAFIM will probably be free game to enter when they leave the global Spotify chart too.
January 16, 20232 yr I would offer to host a SF1 listen-through tonight but alas, I would have no idea what I’m doing

I wonder if Tina Guo might be vetoed now, I was lucky to get away with that at the time as that theme is so well known, but I loved what she did with it! Dire, Dire Docks is probably a lot less well known, I'm not sure many people even picked up on it in Club Bizarre. I've just finished Semi 1, and agree there were a lot of samples or soundalikes, some very good, others not. As a side note, the lyrics of Kluminican Republic are quite something. I'm sure the neighbours enjoyed it as I was WFH today and listen through the speakers at home
January 16, 20232 yr I can be there tonight :jump: (and will be happy to host semi 2 in the next couple of days)
January 16, 20232 yr I can host tonight given tonight is the only night I could do one. :kink: Looking forward to it
January 16, 20232 yr Nosaj Thing <3 I'd agree with what Rob/Silas/Bré said about sampling- it can be a difficult one to call and on marginal ones you likely won't end up pleasing everyone unfortunately. Personally I think there is a meaningful difference between a sample that uses the melody and/or lyrical theme as a crutch, and a sample that changes or strengthens the original message/themes and transforms it into a very separate work. I think Nosaj Thing easily falls into the latter category, it just samples the drum loop from “Teardrop” - which itself is from “Sometimes I Cry” and that forms a very subtle part of “Blue Hour” - everything else: melody/structure/lyrics is unique. Some artists get a lot of unfair criticism for sampling, largely based on the worst cases, but it's really not easy to get right at all - but done well and the results can be amazing and give a great insight into that artists influences, and also help younger people discover (and just in general highlight forgotten/unknown) great tracks that they may otherwise not know of. Just dig into the samples used for any Prodigy single! Anyway, looking forward to checking the rest out later- busy week at work so it may be Friday before I can have a good listen through. Hoping I've got enough of my niche voters (and that it hits them hard enough) to get through here. Black Belt Eagle Scout was almost entirely new to the forum but then she was mentioned in a Doctor Blind post a few days ago! (Highlighting her more recent single 'Nobody', which is also great, although not quite on the same level as the one I've sent imo). That was the first single I've heard from her and I really enjoyed it, so hyped to hear your entry!
January 16, 20232 yr BJSC 151 SF1 listenthrough link, starting at 20:00: https://sync-tube.de/room/t0QviiTA
January 16, 20232 yr Elëdan and Pagasa both delivering as expected <3 but sending some slightly more unpredictable hype from the other semi to FSR Rontvia and to Suedeonia (that was an amazing closer for the semi, can confirm Levellers still have it in them, literal barn stomper *.* hoping that has the potential to do quite well?) A decent semi overall, had 11 or 12 vote worthy songs, although I think it is my least favourite bottom 3 in a semi in quite some time  Btw I think I'm gonna do a SyncTube for semi 2 same time tomorrow. Was great to see such high turnout (think we peaked at 17 people online) and some names who don't usually show up for these things today! Inb4 we're back to like 6 people for semi 2 :kink:
