That arrived with 2014’s Grammy-winning In the Midnight Hour, an exquisite meditation on unrequited love, and its followup, the heartbreak-inspired The Thrill of It All. By the run-up to album three, however, Smith was also ready to have a little more fun. The aching melancholy of love, loss, and yearning for someone to spend their days with was still present, but this time, it was all being mined for invigorating music to help dance the blues away. That third LP should have arrived in early 2020 in the form of To Die For, but, amid the global pandemic, it was delayed, reworked, and renamed with the more sensitive title Love Goes. The album, Smith said ahead of its release, allowed them to heal after their first true breakup. But it also heralded freedom. “I felt at one point that I was going to be trapped onstage wearing a suit and singing ballads for the rest of my life,” said Smith. “When I look back at Love Goes, it reminds of the courage it took. Born Mikayla Simpson in 2000, Koffee grew up in Spanish Town, Jamaica, where she sang in the church choir and taught herself guitar. She was just 17 and studying to become a pharmacist when an acoustic song she wrote in tribute to Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt became an unexpected hit after he shared it online. “I took [music] seriously after a lot of people started tuning in,” Koffee told Apple Music. Working with producers like IzyBeats and Walshy Fire of Major Lazer, the Up Next alum exudes energy and confidence on the mic, ducking and weaving through complex rhyme schemes then landing on indelible hooks. Her tracks often balance vintage reggae textures with flourishes of contemporary dancehall, and, in the style of forebears like Bob Marley, she hits on tensions that feel timeless: On “Blazin,” she conjures the image of a “fyah full of love” as she calls for marginalized youth to support each other in the face of political corruption and neglect. Like so many before her, heartbreak was the fuel to her fire after a relationship crashed into a wall. “Figures,” her 2016 breakout single, captured the sentiment and provided the perfect vehicle for her unique manner of singing; its simple acoustic guitar melody (played by Reyez, of course) contours the extraordinary qualities of her voice, a raw and soaring rasp that lingers in the mind long after it's left the ear. Mom was impressed. He’d already been making beats for a few years, pestering A&Rs on Twitter, crowbarring some connections. He’d even gotten paid a few times. By the time he graduated from high school, he and Mom were making eight-hour-long car trips from St. Louis to Atlanta so Metro could work with Gucci Mane and OJ da Juiceman—contingent, of course, on him keeping his spot on the honor roll. A few months into his freshman year at Morehouse, it became clear that the balance was too tough to keep up. Mom chewed him out. But the work—glossy, atmospheric monsters that pushed trap to cinematic extremes—had too much traction to ignore. The green folder bore out. Future (“Mask Off,” “Low Life”), Migos (“Bad and Boujee”), Post Malone (“Congratulations”), 21 Savage (“Bank Account”), Kodak Black (“Tunnel Vision”): Just a sampling of what followed is some of the most definitive rap of the 2010s, tracks that—alongside the work of collaborators and fellow Atlantans Sonny Digital, Southside, TM88, and Zaytoven—reshaped hip-hop’s sound, feel, and culture. That Metro tackled longer-form projects—full-length collaborations, executive productions—not only made him unusually well-known for a producer, but suggested a broader vision, a transcending of the day-to-day business of beatmaking in favor of building a movement. After a handful of years sharing top billing and a baker’s dozen of platinum records in the bag, he released his own album, 2018’s NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES, a couple of months past his 25th birthday. - Apple Music Future There’s a good anecdote that Future recounted in an interview—about getting into an argument with a guy who was worried about one of the Atlanta rapper’s engineers. The engineer hadn’t left the studio in a week. Had he even eaten? Don’t worry, Future said—he himself hadn’t left in a week, either, and someone was bringing in Wendy’s from up the block. Barely a season goes by without new music from the rapper born Nayvadius Wilburn (in 1983)—whether it’s a mixtape, solo album, or collaborative project (with Drake, with Gucci Mane, with the producer Zaytoven). But prolific isn’t the half of it. Druggy, raw, slick, and surreal, Future’s sound—crystallized on highlights like 2014’s Honest, 2015’s DS2, and 2017’s HNDRXX—has helped redefine 2010s street rap as something strange and almost avant-garde: trap as modern psychedelia. Not that it isn’t melodic too. Like fellow Atlantan and collaborator Young Thug, Future has a way of bending his voice (often using Auto-Tune) into soulful, often sad shapes, half-rapped and half-sung—the sound of a crooner stuck in space. “The biggest thing is just being yourself all the time,” he told Beats 1 host Zane Lowe in early 2017. “When you try and be yourself all the time, everyone’s not gonna like it. But you gotta wake up with that person. At the end of the day, you can be able to look at the person and be like, You know what, I know I’m being myself; I’m not being anyone else.
