January 21, 20232 yr Imagine if someone would have told you at the start of 2021 that the next 2 years would bring number 1 singles from the likes of Miley, Kate Bush, Elton John, Sam Smith and Kim Petras? Who would have believed them? Shakira back in the top 40, Rihanna, Britney & Beyonce back in the top 5, Bebe Rexha getting a #1, Metallica in the top 40, new N-Dubz material in the top 40, the fake-JLS fiasco, UK coming 2nd in Eurovision and generating a #2 hit, the previous Eurovision winner having 3 top 20 hits, a Disney soundtrack #1, a sea shanty #1, Arctic Monkeys selling 119k albums in a week... and not even getting to #1 because Taylor Swift sold 200k albums in a week, a #1 single selling more on CDs than any other format or streaming, Ed Sheeran flopping in Week 1 by not selling 100k... Despite how tedious the charts may seem in the streaming era, we have sure had some interesting stories in the decade so far.
January 21, 20232 yr So Meghan dropped over the week as expected but still ending up with a top 5 of all female lead artists (and no male vocals). Hoping the Miley song will grow on me as it's just decent for me at the moment but it's definitely a major improvement on last week's #1 at the very least and of course super impressive to see her returning to the top spot nearly a decade after her last #1 and 16 years after her first chart appearance. Excellent to see 'Creepin'' rising to #7 :heart: I had a relisten to 'I Don't Wanna Know' earlier today after the repeated takes on here about this version being lazy / a carbon copy / adding nothing to the original etc. and wondering if the original was just a more interesting song than I remembered it being... and I still completely stand by what I said before. The original is almost painfully plain production wise compared to Metro Boomin's take on it. Obviously the new version isn't completely reinventing the wheel but it's pretty much a night and day improvement on the original for me. Are people judging it on the vocals alone or something? 'Sure Thing' now the next song that we have to worry about potentially peaking at #11. Fingers crossed it can also go top 10 in the next few weeks. Happy enough to see 'Lionheart (Fearless)' at least matching the peak of 'HISTORY', it's nothing amazing but far better than that. JVKE going top 20 we very much love to see though *.* And happy to see Hotel Ugly still climbing too even if I seem to be the only person here who likes it lol ~ Shame The 1975 didn't quite make the top 40 in the end as this is the only song I particularly care for from this album (although it peaking at #41 would still be kind of funny x) - especially as it seems to have been kicked out to accommodate a re-entry for that other Metro Boomin song which is nowhere near as good as 'Creepin'' - but even so we have a pretty nice variety of genres among the top 40's new entries this week! Still loving 'People' and hoping that's headed for the top 10 (although lol really at Radio 1 censoring the word 'alcohol', that doesn't even obscure the meaning of the line in the song...) and it's quite a moment to see Bizarrap making the UK top 40, I can hope that this is the start of a new phase of the UK being a little more open to Latin hits again (get Bad Bunny and ROSALÍA more hits here ASAP at the very least pls xx) but realistically I know it's just here because of the virality around the Shakira/Gerard Piqué drama. But hey, I'll take it for the diversity.
