May 18, 20232 yr Omg I can’t believe I forgot Aretha Franklin on my list!!! Same for Sophie Ellis Bextor she could have scraped it too!
May 18, 20232 yr Ooft that low for reigning champion of Rolling Stone's All Time Greatest Vocalist? Sacrilege :o not sure she'd have made my list granted
May 18, 20232 yr A climb and 77 points for position #77... I'll take it *.* what a legend, I think Aretha is the fifth person to fall out of my votes now. I'd check out "To Bring You My Love" album - regarded as one of her strongest especially 'Down by the Water'. If you love 'Man-Size' you'd love a lot of the rockier ones on that but it does showcase her art rock/electronica a lot too. My favourite album of hers is definitely 'Is this Desire?' - captivating and hypnotic journey into a tortured lonely soul, although it's an extremely bleak, raw album in parts so may not be the best for starters - check out the two singles 'Perfect Day Elise' (video above) and 'The Wind' though as they are fairly accessible. All of her albums are very strong though and she tends to change style for each era coming up as authentic each time. She's not really commercial (apart from maybe 'Stories from the City Stories from the Sea') but great with coming up with hooks. Thank you for these recommendations! I'll definitely get on it at some point.
May 18, 20232 yr Looking forward to Olivia's next album. Hoping she'll deliver and won't suffer the second album slump.
May 18, 20232 yr Awww shame Sophie didn't finish a bit higher. My third act to fall. Always thought Kelly Rowland was a bit over-rated so I'm actually surprised she's finished as high as she has! Aretha is a legend of course, love her voice. 'I Say A Little Prayer' remains my favourite from her but I love some of her lesser known 90s stuff too, particularly 'A Deeper Love' and 'A Rose Is Still A Rose'.
May 19, 20232 yr Love Sophie but didnt have room for her this year! Kelly and Aretha two of my favourites 🥰
