June 22, 20232 yr The shade towards Rihanna in this thread is... a CHOICE for sure! Her impact is INSANE and she's a pop culture ICON. She rose in popularity during Buzzjack's existence, so it's clear to see why she has such a big following here on the forum. Acting like she doesn't belong up at the top of the ranks with the rest of those in the top 5... So quick to dismiss her placing when she's quite literally the 2nd biggest selling female artist of all time (behind only Madonna). I get that there are people who don't like much of her music or whatever, that's cool and it's not what I'm getting at, but to say things like she shouldn't be that high or deserving to be that high... RiRi you will ALWAYS be a legend

RiRi you will ALWAYS be a legend  100% agree… when you look at her achievements (after Madonna) she’s arguably the biggest selling female artist, and she deserves her place. For me, although not a fan, I’ve loved some of her tracks. The reason she is a true artist for me, is because she’s artistically authentic. And you cannot say that about many others on this list !!!
June 22, 20232 yr Lol. How is Rihanna "artistically authentic" but Gaga not, pray tell? (I like both, but just saying. Rihanna is almost like a puppet in comparison)

June 22, 20232 yr Gaga is way more authentic than Riri, for a start she's had much more creative input into her music from the start.
June 22, 20232 yr Lmao what!!! Rihanna is HUGE ans is a much bigger star than Gaga and Beyonce combined sales wise, bur she had very little input into her her music.
June 22, 20232 yr Rihanna had her first songwriting credit (singles-wise) on Break It Off, her sixth single. The second was Hard in 2009. For a long while she was "just" the singer, although brilliant one.
June 22, 20232 yr Yeah you can't knock Rihanna she might not be for all generations hut she's definitely the one of my generation. Even if her songs aren't that authentic they certainly have made an impact and have stuck their time. I also think the general public would prefer Rihanna to Gaga. I prefer gaga but you can't deny Rihanna has THE catalogue Edited June 22, 20232 yr by Rough_edges
June 22, 20232 yr Gaga is getting around 10 million streams on Spotify daily, Rihanna 18 million. Although she has more songs on the platform (358 vs. 314), she is still way more popular. But she caters the hip hop audience too so it's understandable.
June 22, 20232 yr I mean Rihanna is still the 5th most popular artist on Spotify with absolutely hardly any new material. I can't see the argument some people have been having it's obvious her place in the top 3 is warrant. I mean Madonnas popularity isn't being progressed into other generations whereas the like of Michael Jackson, Beatles have

I can't see the argument some people have been having it's obvious her place in the top 3 is warrant. I mean Madonnas popularity isn't being progressed into other generations whereas the like of Michael Jackson, Beatles have True, but she isn't helping herself at all with recent releases and recent um iconic moments. Also, sexism plays a part with male artists progressing into newer generarions, with femsle artists being seen as less cool. This is especially true for pop artists. Rihanna, being hip hop, is thr ONLY one who might transcend this in future. She is probably the new Madonna, or woulda been if she had released songs instead of handbags.
June 22, 20232 yr Thanks so much for this rate Gezza. Really great fun to read and certainly lead to me reconnecting with a few blasts from the past and discovering new music. Great that a lot of my fave alternative artists climbed so much (although slightly sad Kate Bush didn't make top 10). Of the top 10, Madonna was my favourite, although having nothing decent since 'Confessions of a Dancefloor' surely means that she is sure to lose her crown next time unless she pulls something amazing out of the bag!
June 23, 20232 yr I think the fact that Rihanna remains a streaming titan despite giving us crumbs in music terms for years and getting a hype top 3 with a wet fish soundtrack single speaks enough about the longevity her back catalogue holds.
June 23, 20232 yr oh my I was thinking Rihanna hasn't released anything since Anti/Work and then I remember those terrible couple ballads from Black Panther :o no wonder I forgot all about them :D
