March 9, 20232 yr It’s a pretty decent song tbf, it’s catchy fun and upbeat and I could see it doing quite well in the UK charts, it’s definitely not winning material though, I hope it’ll be good live with staging though, maybe could be top 10 with a push I dunno
March 9, 20232 yr So slow in typing it actually appears as I post 😅 On first listen I like it more than Space Man. The spoken middle 8 is absolutely dire but the verses are decent the post chorus is catchy and by the end of it the chorus is ok as well. Should do ok I think. It’s a modern Radio friendly Pop track and that above all else is what has been missing from the UK this past 20+ years. I feel better about this than I did Sam Ryder tbh. The lyrics are no more cheesy or whatever than those of space Space Man. Will come down to her vocal and how she sells it on stage I think. Good vocal and performance and I wouldn’t be shocked to see this around the lower reaches of the top 10
March 9, 20232 yr Author Okay, time to chill. This is the sort of pretty okay pop song that I imagine we always have some version of somewhere in the charts, and we would have been gagging for anything remotely close to that from 2015-2021 inclusive. Will I play it much? Probably not. But while it could finish right down the bottom it could always do midtable too with a solid performance. Probably depends on how many solo female party bops make it to the final and outside of Israel, Norway and Poland there aren't all that many of them and this definitely compares favourably to Poland if not the other two. This is really the classic host entry, not going to be a winner, Mae will still get a big profile due to being our host entrant. Not the best we could have hoped for but really tough act to follow Space Man.
March 9, 20232 yr I actually quite like it! It's stuck in my head after one listen. And she seems fun.
March 9, 20232 yr From the title I thought it was going to be some bland singer-songwriter shit. 'tis fun, but a lot will depend on the staging.
March 9, 20232 yr It’s alright. Not embarrassing, as I had feared it would be. Space Men won’t come along every year. :)
March 9, 20232 yr Another strong entry from the UK! On my 3rd listen and really enjoying it! As long as she can deliver vocally I can see this being the right side of the results table.
March 9, 20232 yr We Brits love our "Da Da Da" songs don’t we, this will be another one to add to this thread… http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=253933
March 9, 20232 yr On paper this should be right up my street, but... I'll admit that it's catchy and it certainly sounds like something that could chart in the UK in 2023 - it's contemporary to a fault, particularly in terms of production. The lyrics are... what they are. I'm not so keen on how her vocals sound in parts of this. The spoken word part is the worst bit for me, that part really isn't serving. As ever, I hope the UK can do well, and I wish her the best. I'll look forward to seeing it performed... maybe a live performance will sell the song better for me (I've never heard her sing live before, maybe I'll prefer that to her studio vocals).
March 9, 20232 yr Some early thoughts after listening to the whole track at last. Unoriginal, bland, provincial, lyrically lame, dirge. I hate it, it's like a very poor Dua Lipa, but I guess it may do well in Eastern Europe. It proves to me that Sam Ryder was a total fluke. We're co-hosting it, and we've put forward a stinker! Final thought... Mae Muller did indeed write a song, a crap one!
March 9, 20232 yr It's completely stuck in my head, it was from the clip too. My family and some friends have already texted me saying they love it, and that it's good to have us send catchy, upbeat pop. I can't help but think the 'fandom' has catastrophised this a bit because it's not (A-grade troll, but we love her) Rina, and clearly it's not another top five result no matter how it's staged. But while, yes, it could accidentally do badly, it's accessible, modern, well produced and catchy enough, with a competent enough performer that I don't think it's anything like going 'back to square one'. It's not a farting out 'will this do' like Bigger Than Us or Embers, it's just us going from a jury friendly Radio 2 pop song to a Radio 1/Capital chart sounding song, with some accomplished songwriters on board and a charasmatic performer who has already been in the charts. I'm actually glad we're not going to get stuck in a groove, like The Netherlands have done ever since Calm After The Storm - sure it's great to send songs that do well consistently but it's also good to have variety and not just try and appeal to the same market every year, because that doesn't always work either. March 9, 20232 yr As an interesing aside, I was just looking at the recent record for host entries. Since 2015 we've had two last places and another three bottom fives. Following up a smash is notoriously difficult, probably partly because there's some element of the host broadcaster not wanting to host again so soon, so deliberately sending something that isn't competitive. It sort of feels like the BBC have used this as an opportunity to field a competent chart sounding song, with a different sound to last year, but showcasing a performer whose career is going fine but needs a leg up, but where they also know it's not a winner. I still think they'll throw everything at the performance and I don't reckon the refreshed BBC team have lost it in any way shape or form, I'd rather have Mae any day over anybody we've sent since they were cycling through the hasbeens in the early 10s. I don't think winning was particularly at the top of the agenda this year, their efforts are understandably elsewhere but they certainly haven't sent a disgrace of an entry or artist. March 9, 20232 yr 'I'm actually glad we're not going to get stuck in a groove'... Do you mean a winning groove, like that of Sam Ryder? That's EXACTLY what we should have been stuck in!!! We've returned to a losing groove, and this track is very poor, right up there with Josh Dubovie and James Newman. I'm part of a Eurovision WhatsApp group with 30+ members, and nobody is loving this track - at best, somebody said it could be a grower. Just so poor.
March 9, 20232 yr Author I'm part of a Eurovision WhatsApp group with 30+ members, and nobody is loving this track - at best, somebody said it could be a grower. Just so poor. I'm looking in on a big Eurovision Discord and reddit and I'm seeing mixed to positive reactions with a few very positive. I feel like there is actually an audience for this out there and if you compare it to host entries in recent times then it actually looks pretty great.
March 9, 20232 yr My only problem is that she looks so dead in her eyes while doing some minimal dance moves in the music video and if she brings that to the stage then there will be no excitement because the song itself it's minimal anyways...

I'm part of a Eurovision WhatsApp group with 30+ members, and nobody is loving this track - at best, somebody said it could be a grower. Just so poor. Nope, I meant a middle of the road groove, like the one The Netherlands are constantly in and never move away from (to much admirable success, but you know what you're getting nearly every year). Of course Sam is fantastic, and elevated a good song into a great, almost winning one, but we constantly send middle of the road music - the original studio track is leagues below his awesome live performance - and I'm glad that we're doing something different. Eurovision has won a huge young Gen Z, TikTok audience over the last few years and while I'm not suggesting we should be playing into that, I also don't think it's any harm to one year go for a mainstream Capital/Radio 1 type pop song and see what happens, rather than staying in the same groove constantly. It could well backfire on us, but I would honestly be surprised if it's a contender for last unless the staging is completely hopeless and we're drawn 2nd. Edited March 9, 20232 yr by gooddelta
March 9, 20232 yr Maybe a grower, but on first listen I think it's so poor, generic and bland. I think we would be better off letting Sam Ryder representing us again tbh!
March 9, 20232 yr Christ... it sounds really, really boring on first few listens? It doesn't help that she's an absolute charisma vacuum (sorry Rich, not seeing this star power you're talking about!). A song chock-full of cliches... you smashed up an expensive car, ooh I'm out with the girls, da da da da da... okay? Surely the whole point is we shouldn't be sending something that sounds like a diluted version of what's in our charts which is already flat as a pancake as is? This just reminds me of James Newman all over again. I think it just speaks to us once again not really having a musical identity. I can't imagine what she's gonna do on stage to bring this to life, throw her nails about a bit like she always does?
March 9, 20232 yr It is disappointing that ever after Sam's commercial success, the British Music Industry still maintain their "Don't touch Eurovision with a bargepole" mentality and this is the best song the BBC/TaP could come up with- even with the added publicity of being the host entry!
