It is definitely a puzzling choice to lead the album with this after the way he started out marketing the era. But I guess he couldn't resist the temptation to try and get one proper hit single from the album. (Of course we haven't heard anything from it yet but based on what Whoddy said I assume it's going to be quite different to the rest of the album...)

Nope! He produced I Don’t Care, Beautiful People, Remember the Name and Take Me Back to London. (As well as Ed’s feature on End Game).

I overall like Ed but 'I Don't Care' and 'Beautiful People' are basically two of the worst no.1s of all time. TMBTL was kind of ok as a song although crappy lyrics.

Yes TMBTL is passable but those other two really are naff. I remember being so disappointed with Beautiful People because I thought it must be alright at least having Khalid on it and then it was boring as shit. Best thing on the album was probably Cross Me.
It's close to the melody of Wrecking Ball too.

Yep, that's just Ed by numbers, and I noticed the 'Wrecking Ball' similarity straightaway too. He should know better after all his copyright infringement court cases!

It doesn’t necessarily sound bad it’s just that he always kind of makes out that he’s a lot more daring / risk taking than he is.

Like would this have really sounded “out of place on Equals” would anything on Equals have sounded out of place on Divide.

Besides his first album I think any Ed track could fit on any Ed album and that’s fine but he needs to stop with how he describes his music pre releases.

I’m intrigued to hear if the rest of this Subtract album as well is as safe as what this is or if he’s just went for a commercial lead and the rest of the albums more experimental.

It’s not horrible, but it does sound like it would’ve fit on Equals. Will wait to hear it in studio form though.
Yesss!! Haven't been a massive fan of his for a while but this sounds stunning.

So it doesn't sound like any great departure for him, but he just sang it with a piano as the backing so I guess it will depend what beat etc he puts over it for the real thing.

Wasn’t this being pushed as an ‘acoustic’ album, not expecting a great deal of production on any of the tracks this time.

I don't know. I was going by earlier comments in this thread and that Fred again was involved in writing it (along with Max Martin and Shellbeck). Didn't sound very acoustic on paper.

I think he's suggested the album is going to be his first "authentic" music, but he's tacked on this which apparently doesn't fit the album to ensure he gets a hit with it.

I don't think it's actually been advertised as acoustic tbf, I think a lot of people have made that assumption - I might be wrong with that though.

He's performing the album in full soon in London with a 12-piece band, so I assume it won't be fully acoustic anyway.
