March 28, 20232 yr Sean Paul could come back and get a smash again with the right collab I think. Also, I think McFly should be added. Their longevity and success as a group is wild!
March 28, 20232 yr If you're including Greatest Hits albums, then both Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson have been top 20 this year, and have been in the chart consistently for years. Plus, the 40th Anniversary edition of Thriller charted last year. If we're going down this route then Elvis is probably the biggest oversight left off this list. I'd be willing to bet that if some hypothetical from the vault track of his that nobody had ever heard before was released it would do enough to break the top 40 off downloads.
March 28, 20232 yr I feel like very recently we've been seeing a LOT more "veteran" acts back in the singles chart, so I think eventually it might become more like the 90's again. The top 3 in the midweeks at the moment are Miley Cyrus, Calvin Harris/Ellie Goulding and The Weeknd, all of which were famous 10+ years ago. And it's not just this week, it's happened so much in like the past 9 months that I think some kind of long-lasting shift has happened and it's not just a random fluke. A few years ago I was actually slightly annoyed at how it seemed like almost all the hit songs were by new artists but I have no reason to be annoyed about that anymore lol. I've been noticing this since around mid last year. I think between an aging streaming demographic, TikTok algorithms that don't produce audience retention, overweighted pure sales gimmicks that weaponise baked in fanbases, and a years long pandemic destroying the live music scene, it's incredibly difficult for new artists to make a significant mark. Genuinely I'm much more surprised to see a new artist break out with a hit than a 'shocking' comeback from major label artists like Meghan Trainor or Sam Smith.
April 30, 20232 yr from your list I think these are the only relevant ones for the singles charts if one is being strict: Eminem P!nk Coldplay Tiësto Beyoncé Guetta Chris Brown Calvin Harris OneRepublic Miley Cyrus Adele Lady Gaga Taylor Swift DrakeI'm a bit late here, but excluding Britney and leaving P!nk is certainly a choice, as just last year one debuted at #3 without lifting a finger and the other took months and a full album campaign to even reach the Top 40. April 30, 20232 yr I'm a bit late here, but excluding Britney and leaving P!nk is certainly a choice, as just last year one debuted at #3 without lifting a finger and the other took months and a full album campaign to even reach the Top 40. Britney had a hyped comeback collab reworking a well known Elton John song with the man himself that was playing off the chart success he’d recently had. She hadn’t done anything for six years. Pink has always been somewhat consistent and was actually able to launch a successful album campaign with her album holding far more steady than the majority of albums released this year. There’s only about four of the last 24 years that she hasn’t scored a top 20 hit. Add Britney if you wish, but removing Pink from that list feels like a reach.
April 30, 20232 yr Tyler, The Creator defo. Also Jonas Brothers and Jay-z (I'm not sure if these have been mentioned prior.
May 1, 20232 yr Tyler, The Creator defo. Also Jonas Brothers and Jay-z (I'm not sure if these have been mentioned prior. He may have started at the end of the 2000's, but it's quite a stretch to consider him a "pre-2010 artist" like the others in this thread. Especially with his debut album being 2011.

I mean, I know it didn't chart but I do remember a lot of publicity around 'Bast*rd' . Before and shortly after release. And tyler also regards it as his debut

May 24, 20232 yr Shania and Kylie both battling out for top 40 places this week with new recordings!!! 😱 Shania 25 years into her UK career and Kylie more than 35 years! Just wondering which other women have had top 40 hits with new recordings more than 35 years into their UK chart career!
May 24, 20232 yr Sean Paul could come back and get a smash again with the right collab I think. Get him on the Tattoo remix with Loreen B-) https://www.tiktok.com/@shaibrides/video/7236305719492955418
May 24, 20232 yr So are Elton, ABBA, and potentially Kylie, the only pre-1990 artists to reach the top 40 with brand new recordings? Elton’s are all collaborations and mostly interpolations of older hits. ABBA was 1 album released in around 40 years. Kylie’s achievements will therefore be something very special. Admittedly (although I haven’t looked at it in detail), if we look at songwriters and producers, at least one of Kylie’s team is currently at number 1 with ‘Miracle’ (I think) - but I don’t think we count this as a collaboration as such.
