May 15, 20232 yr I think it’s a bit unfair that the Big 5 seemingly struggle all the time (unless you’re a Italy it seems lmao) I think them plus the Auto Qualifier should have their performances in the semi’s that their country is voting in too and not just a random little clip. I always felt like that was a bit of a disadvantage personally. It’s one of the only things I’d like to see changed tbh - the semis should definitely include performances from all the auto qualifying countries.

May 15, 20232 yr Oh absolutely - by all accounts the Finnish broadcasters/hosts were telling the public not to vote for Sweden, presumably as they were their biggest rivals And that was the only time Sweden received no points
May 15, 20232 yr It’s one of the only things I’d like to see changed tbh - the semis should definitely include performances from all the auto qualifying countries. However I don't think that is the problem. The issue is the songs these countries send are often worse than the ones that NQ in the semi-finals in the first place. When they send full package entries (Spain 2022, UK 2022, Germany 2018 and France 2021) they do well with the same format. This is the first year a lot of casual fans blamed the performance instead of politics because they saw what was possible last year with Sam and his performance in the final cemented that.

Absolutely - I’m not saying it would change the final result etc., but I personally would just like all the auto qualifiers included somehow (more than the 30 seconds than they are already).

May 15, 20232 yr I say scrap the auto-qualification, other than for last year’s winner. It’s a poisoned chalice. Having a song that should have been put out of its misery in the semis in the final and then it completely bombing is just demoralising for a country.
May 15, 20232 yr why don't we have a third semifinal with all the Big 5 countries crowning the biggest crybaby saying it's unfair they automatically go to the final each year. would that be enough to finally have UK send something other than an F-tier song (except last year I guess)? the amount of comments I've seen this year about I Wrote a Song almost being in contention for the win was ridiculous. And finishing 5th or something in Buzzvision. Yeahhhhhh, all while judging the song itself, sureeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
May 15, 20232 yr Although I am still confused as to how Germany came last (this year and last!) It didn’t connect with the public and the ‘rock’ song this year was Australia who out of the two were superior. The German performance was good but a little too Lorde.

Yeahhhhhh, all while judging the song itself, sureeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee The thing is the UK were behind the song this year because it’s the type of song that’s in our charts and on the radio constantly so there was an expectation/hope that if we felt it was modern/current etc., that it would translate well at ESC. I’d much rather us believe we can do well with a song that actually does well in the UK than sending entries like Electrovision, Michael Rice, Josh Dubovie etc., that misses the charts and we don’t even want to listen to it let alone Europe.
May 15, 20232 yr then participate in the semifinals, bitchI want us to coz I think it’d constantly be the kick up the arse we need at least!
May 15, 20232 yr It's disappointing to see the most idiotic conspiracy theories social media has to offer also being posted on here.
May 15, 20232 yr @1658154492083290112  at ALL OF THIS!! THe best 4 songs being the top 4 most streamed :cheeseblock:
May 15, 20232 yr Have to say that it is painful to sit through some of the public vote reveals. It kills the vibe too much as you go from a big party atmosphere with everyone in the crowd getting behind pretty much every song to absolutely loads of the contestants just being awarded pittance for their efforts - I know there's always been acts that have scored lowly but generally they weren't live on camera when it is announced as they always used to focus on the acts getting the big points. Plus being told you got less than 20 points from all of the public vote has to be worse at the time than gradually not getting votes over the course of an evening.
May 15, 20232 yr Eurovision has gone from being a constest to a commercial show when during the competition we see songs participating in the streaming charts that influence the vote, and with rehearsals being accessed to the public when all this should only be seen live on the day of the program, and the top streaming only available after the show.

Plus being told you got less than 20 points from all of the public vote has to be worse at the time than gradually not getting votes over the course of an evening. I’m minded to agree. It makes for a more dramatic TV show but so does the original plan this year of having the Semi results announced X Factor style. It doesn’t mean it’s a better idea overall. I have no solution to offer as I do prefer countries essentially having two sets of points rather than one set which combines the jury & public votes. However, I’m minded to say the current presentation doesn’t work as so much time and focus is spent with the jury votes including a regular update as to the current results with interviews with the contestants, and then the public voting reveal is over in a flash with both an unfair focus on low scoring countries and then a lack of focus on those countries who shoot up the leaderboard due to being far more popular with the public than juries. I think many people’s perception of the success comes from the jury votes and it penalises the countries who are more popular with the public. Those topping the public vote like Finland and Keiino don’t get any form of interview to recognise that success yet the jury winners get several! I have no answer to solving it but I hope they can work on a better solution.
May 15, 20232 yr That's true actually - Finland were clear top 2 yet never really even had a moment to shine in the results process. Presumably that would have been similar for Ukraine last year had they not won as a result of the televote. I'm probably just overly tired of sensationalist media and shows - and the OTT and usually loathsome reactions they bring out on social media from people. The reactions I've seen online since Saturday definitely contribute to my view that the results turn the show from a brilliant celebration to a sea of arguments and vitriol.
May 15, 20232 yr Those two songs were opposites in every possible way, hence the arguments and strong reactions. The system itself works fine imo.
May 15, 20232 yr I've not got a problem with the reveal actually, it's not perfect but it's so much more suspenseful than the old system and the contestants all know how it works at this point. Even with Loreen's landslide win, there was still some tension as to whether she could keep it. This feels like an unfortunate year in that a very clear public favourite lost to someone that's won before and was seen as too 'obvious', and sadly the toxic and sexist online discourse that usually occurs has made it seem all the worst. I do ultimately feel the juries should be less weighted or have a more diverse makeup that can recognise quality in something traditionally 'non-jury friendly'. Something like a 60/40 split seems fair. Not sure how that could be implemented into a reveal in a way the public could follow though.
