Posted May 31, 20232 yr Welcome to the next episode in our listening marathon, covering every UK Number 2 hit single ever from November 1952 to the present day! Jimwatts and I will be your hosts for this series, and the sessions will run from 16:00 to 19:00 on Sundays (19:30 including bonus tracks). The first session will take place this Sunday, 4 June and will cover the whole of the 1950s. We will be using Synctube for the sessions. If you have not joined before why not give it a go this Sunday? Feel free to join for as much or as little of the session as you like, and join in the live chat if you wish. The bonus tracks We will end each session with a number of bonus tracks in the following categories: Top 5 hits: each week we will play half a dozen or so songs from the period in question that peaked at #3, #4 or #5. You will have a chance to nominate tracks to play in the days leading up to each session. Non top 5 hits: depending on timing your hosts may select 1 or 2 of these to play from the relevant period. New #1 singles and albums: as we have already done listening marathons for both #1 singles and albums we will keep these topped up as and when there are new chart toppers! The RIP slot: whenever someone notable from the music world passes away during the week feel free to nominate a track of theirs or relating to them to play (does not have to be a chart hit). The birthday slot: if you have a birthday on the day of a session or during the week before or after, you can pm Jim or me with a random track of your choice. Obviously we probably won’t know it’s your birthday unless you tell us! The Jamelia slot: this is when somebody thinks of a random track people want to hear for no particular reason. We’ll try and limit these this series to finish as close to 19:30 as possible though. Hope you enjoy the series! :cheer: Edited May 31, 20232 yr by JulianT
May 31, 20232 yr Excited to be starting this new series! :w00t: In Sunday's first session, we'll be covering the entirety of 1950s for which the chart existed, and finish in March 1960. This will take in the first 61 #2s, one of them a double A side - future weeks will cover shorter timeframes in one go as the songs become slightly longer and the turnover of #2s picks up. What follows is a very long list of over 150 songs for you to choose from for the first bonus section. You are welcome to nominate up to five of these, from any combination of #3s, #4s and #5s. If this seems a little daunting, Julian has shortlisted 15 of them, marked in blue in the lists, as recommendations, but feel free to choose any of the songs, and we'll play the ones which get the most votes: #3s 1952 Bing Crosby - In later weeks, many of these will have already been played in the context of the albums on which they appear - I'll try to identify these, but won't necessarily rule out some of them being played again if there is sufficient demand, so we'll see how that goes. My own choices: Doris Day and Johnnie Ray - Let's Walk That-A-Way Bill Haley And His Comets - Shake, Rattle And Roll The Champs - Tequila Buddy Holly - Rave On Peggy Lee - Fever Edited May 31, 20232 yr by jimwatts
May 31, 20232 yr Hyped :cheer: Bonus trio: Bill Haley And His Comets - Shake, Rattle And Roll The Champs - Tequila Peggy Lee - Fever
May 31, 20232 yr Very few songs there that I recognise but will certainly approve the nominations for 'Shake, Rattle And Roll' and 'Tequila'. I know 'Poor Little Fool' was the first ever #1 on the US Hot 100 - not sure if it's any good but maybe that makes it notable enough to warrant a play? Looking forward to this anyways :jump:
May 31, 20232 yr Hyped *.* I've looked at the lists for this and seen programmes about these before but never marathoned them all, there's some wonderful oddities and total classics from many eras here. I don't recognise a lot there, but I'll second Fever and Shake, Rattle and Roll (I seem to recall that being played at the albums sessions, but I may be misremembering as that was ages ago x)
May 31, 20232 yr This should be the only week that I don't know most of the 3-5s. These are the five I'm going to pick out: Winifred Atwell - Let's Have A Ding Dong The Crickets - Oh Boy Bill Haley And His Comets - Shake, Rattle And Roll Winifred Atwell - Britannia Rag Peggy Lee - Fever
May 31, 20232 yr I'll second Fever and Shake, Rattle and Roll (I seem to recall that being played at the albums sessions, but I may be misremembering as that was ages ago x) It might have been a bonus track at some point (I stopped keeping track of those and my memory is quite fuzzy now x) but it's not on the main playlist. Bill Haley's only song on there is 'Choo Choo Ch'Boogie'.
May 31, 20232 yr Sorry, I meant Fever (probably should've had them the other way round with that phrasing x)
May 31, 20232 yr Crickets - Oh Boy Danny And The Juniors - At The Hop Neil Sedaka - Oh Carol The Platters - The Great Pretender / Only You - both are fabulous Bill Haley And His Comets - Shake, Rattle And Roll
May 31, 20232 yr As always, I don't think I'll be joining for the 50s - not sure I can sit through a whole session of them sorry
May 31, 20232 yr Oh I'll actually nominate 'The Great Pretender' too, overlooked that one! Sorry, I meant Fever (probably should've had them the other way round with that phrasing x) Peggy Lee doesn't even have any top 2 albums so pretty sure that wouldn't have been played  (I don't think it really matters if we have some repeats anyway)
May 31, 20232 yr Author As always, I don't think I'll be joining for the 50s - not sure I can sit through a whole session of them sorry Aww shame Dandy! You know what the 50s #2 list is pretty varied and there’s pleasingly not very much croon.
June 3, 20232 yr Songwriter Cynthia Weil died on Thursday. Among her compositio0ns (with Barry Mann) was You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' performed by, among others, The Righteous Brothers.
June 4, 20232 yr Author https://sync-tube.de/room/AwPL188C Hoping to start at 16:00 sharp so would be great if people could join a few minutes before!
June 4, 20232 yr Unfortunately I don't think I'm going to be able to make it today now :( but hopefully next week

June 4, 20232 yr Missed the first couple of songs so have just given them a listen now - 'Feet Up (Pat Him On The Po-Po)' is definitely the best of those Guy Mitchell songs, a bit of a bop. Aside from some obvious classics ('That's Amore', 'Unchained Melody' - didn't know this particular version before but it was a good one, 'Hound Dog', 'Wake Up Little Susie') the songs that stood out most for me from today in a positive way were 'Terry's Theme From 'Limelight'', 'Blue Star (The Medic Theme)' (think this was my favourite discovery overall, a warm fireplace anthem x), 'Lost John'/'Stewball' (both sides were good), 'Last Train To San Fernando' and 'Theme From 'A Summer Place''. There were more songs that I liked than I expected, thought it'd be a case of having no strong feelings either way for most of it - and there was plenty of that to be clear but yes, a good number of gems sprinkled throughout to keep things interesting. On the flipside, think I have a clear bottom 3 from this week of 'The Ballad Of Davy Crockett', 'We Will Make Love' and 'Poppa Piccolino'. 'A Wonderful Time Up There' had very eye rolling lyrics too but saved by at least having a decent tune to it. Mostly a great bunch of bonus songs too, 'At The Hop' in particular was a boppy discovery (? - think I might have heard it before but not super familiar with it) and 'Little Red Monkey' really is massively before its time! Looking forward to having slightly longer songs in future weeks to have a bit more time to form opinions / fewer songs to comment on
