Posted July 6, 20232 yr Was I the only one who was not only shocked that the song debuted at 5 but actually climbed 3 places the next week? I wouldn’t have been shocked had this been 88-89 but at a time when K wasn’t super popular, the parent album becoming her first uk top 10 miss and “word is out” becoming her first top 10 singles miss… still baffles me how a fairly avg song like this peaked so high!
July 6, 20232 yr I think it showed that the GP still wanted that fun/bubble gum pop from Kylie - After ‘Word Is Out’ was at the time a distaste for a lead single charting at #16 PWL seemed to scramble to find the hits (IYWWMN and GMJALMT), and it worked - it just didn’t represent the album or the progression Kylie was aiming to achieve.
July 6, 20232 yr It showed she could still attract sales with a catchy song…it’s actually a cute vocal and she looked gorgeous in the video. Though, yes, shocked it went in at 5, matching BTDYK. I bought it on 7 inch single which I hope is still somewhere in my mother’s loft! Edited July 6, 20232 yr by aeroco
July 6, 20232 yr I did and still do like it but its not a standout Kylie single. At the time though it was a great turnaround chart wise after the complete shock underperformance of word is out. I think at many times throughout Kylies career we see when she moves away the great pop sound she does people are just like we want pop Kylie and nothing else.
July 6, 20232 yr I think at many times throughout Kylies career we see when she moves away the great pop sound she does people are just like we want pop Kylie and nothing else. This. Body Language after Fever 2 Hearts as a lead single Just 2 that come to mind. I think Give Me... was a surprise instant hit after Word didn't do so well. But it was a cover (which back then often helped as people alreasy knew the song), it was being used in a TV ad and it had a new song on the b-side (Do You Dare) which was a bit of a talking point for being "Rave Kylie". It helped that it was a big pop song... though I didn't like it much.
July 6, 20232 yr Author She did look gorgeous in the video - and I do remember it being in an advert. Agree @ Kylie going away from pop and the singles not doing well. I still think how it would've all been if she'd released "In my arms" as the 1st single from X and performed it on X factor. Would've resulted in a much higher position than the #4 debut. And those were the days when R1 was A-listing her so a nice poppy "IMA" would've done wonders.
July 6, 20232 yr I wonder if they had give me just a little more time as the lead single from Lets Get To It would the album have done any better or at the least managed a better peak, word is out at the time i was more trying to like it more than i actually did but nowadays i actually enjoy the song but it wasnt the right move for Kylie at the time, it just felt it was too much of a leap and people didnt like it not helped by the fact that Kylies popularity was in decline at the same time. With lets get to it, if word is out wasnt a single and give me just a little more time was the lead what song would you pick as a fourth single, id probably say too much of a good thing. While i guess i like it is my own fave on the album i know it probably wouldnt have worked as single.
July 12, 20231 yr It was the only single from let’s get to it which entered inside the T10 in the first week. I think it’s an ok song and it’s grown on me more as it’s aged but it’s not got the same sparkle as some of her earlier classic hits like BTDYK or hand on your heart.
July 12, 20231 yr It does miss that sparkle like you said and it's not up there with some of her other top 2 hits. I never took on board it was the only let's get to it single to debut top 10.
July 16, 20231 yr Wasn't it said the decision to release Give Me Just A Little More Time was only decided after the underperformance of Word Is Out.
July 16, 20231 yr Wasn't it said the decision to release Give Me Just A Little More Time was only decided after the underperformance of Word Is Out. I’m sure it was that’s why the LGTI campaign was a mess - it’s the first time they had experienced singles ‘underperforming’ so threw out what they thought the GP wanted (and in fairness to PWL it worked for singles success!).
July 16, 20231 yr If that's true it did work in turning her fortunes around in the singles chart but I don't think it really helped the album. I wonder if it was the lead would the album have sold better, I hate that it has such a low peak.
July 17, 20231 yr To be fair, Rhythm of Love showed a rather sharp decline in success from her two previous albums despite single success, so I'm not sure if Let's Get To It would've been more successful with a different lead single; better peak, maybe, but I think it would've struggled.
July 17, 20231 yr Rhythm of love really should have sold better on the back of such great singles, I know her audience was changing and her popularity in decline but the album deserved at least double platinum.

I think maybe it'd have done a lot better had they released it straight after 'Better The Devil You Know', I can't believe they waited months to release 'Step Back in Time' as the second single and released Rhythm of Love off the back of that! It's no wonder the interest died.

It's no wonder the interest died. Enjoy Yourself wasn't released until after Never Too Late, so it was hardly a new strategy for her to release a few singles pre-album. In hindsight, yes, they probably should've released it after Devil, but then again it'd miss out on those Christmas chart weeks and maybe ended up selling even less than it did. For whatever reason, the interest in buying a Kylie album just waned.

There was a big long gap with nothing between BTDYK and SBIT which was a significant chunk of the year, I think that must have surely played a part.
July 17, 20231 yr I don't know why they left such a gap between both singles. As great as Better The Devil You Know is, it had a relatively short chart life. That said, the public were not sold on Kylie's image at that time and the split with Jason Donovan was viewed by many as harsh and against how they previously seen Kylie. It was a transition period in her career that may have underperformed but set the wheels in motion to music longevity.
July 17, 20231 yr Rhythm of Love was an album that feels way bigger than it was, with lets get to it its the opposite you just know it didnt do well and had disaappointing sales and chart peak. Rhythm of love gave us brilliant singles that we all love but i suppose looking back it only gave Kylie 1 top 2 hit which at the time was a disappointment when her previous album had way more and also number 1's.
