Posted July 20, 20231 yr One week till the nominee list is revealed so time to make some predictions Possible candidates: Jockstrap (got a lot of critical acclaim, so they're very likely to make it) Grian Chatten Dry Cleaning Squid (Bright Green Field, alas, didn't make it in 2021, but hopefully their follow-up will) Baba Ali Benefits Black Honey Daughter Depeche Mode (they never got nominated for the prize, but if Aphex Twin and Mogwai could get noms later in their career, maybe Depeche could too) Easy Life Everything But The Girl Gold Panda Hak Baker John Cale Mahalia The Murder Capital Nothing But Thieves Oliver Sim Olivia Dean Pale Blue Eyes Rina Sawayama Sorry Another post-punk album (Courting, Gilla Band, LIFE, Lounge Society, Shame) UK rap album (Nines, Flohio, Potter Payper, Songer, Guvna B) Jazz album (London Brew, Ezra Collective, The Comet Is Coming, Alfa Mist). As much as I would love for Comet to get nominated, it would also be nice to see Ezra get it as they haven't been nominated before Other debut album At least one commercial success (RAYE, Sam Smith, Maisie Peters, Tom Grennan) Personal wishlist: Loyle Carner, PVA, Daniel Avery, Shygirl, Temples, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Alison Goldfrapp, Billy Nomates, Jessie Ware, SG Lewis Arctic Monkeys, Little Simz and Young Fathers already won the prize, so it's unsure if they would get nom'd (maybe one of them?). Slowthai put out an amazing album this year, but I don't know if it would get nominated because of the r@pe charges.
July 20, 20231 yr Yes please Daniel Avery, Shygirl or Temples from your wishlist. Would also be here for Gabe Gurnsey or Overmono from other electronic names.
July 27, 20231 yr Shortlist: Arctic Monkeys Ezra Collective Fred Again.. J Hus Jessie Ware Jockstrap Lankum Loyle Carner Olivia Dean RAYE Shygirl Young Fathers Got my Shygirl wish :cheer: her album and the Young Fathers one are my favourites from those I know on the list. Have also heard Fred Again.., Jessie Ware and RAYE's. Need to give the Jockstrap album a go as I loved '50/50' and 'Concrete Over Water'
July 27, 20231 yr Decent noms this year, It would be great to see Jessie, Jockstrap, Loyle, RAYE or Young Fathers take it. The worst case scenario is if Hus or the Arctics get it
July 27, 20231 yr 5 albums on the list that I've heard (Young Fathers, RAYE, Shygirl, Jockstrap and Arctic Monkeys, listed from the one I'd most to least like to see winning x) and 2 others that are on my list to get to eventually (Fred again.. and Jessie Ware - was kind of expecting it to be more than that as my backlog of albums I need to listen to is getting very long now oop, including a lot of the albums listed in the OP). Nice to see Lankum on the list too, really enjoyed a couple of singles off their album. Not really bothered about the rest of the list (a couple of J Hus bangers aside). I know Young Fathers have won it before so they're probably not super likely to take it again but I'd really love to see it happen, their new album was fantastic.
July 28, 20231 yr This is a great list, although I’ve not heard of Lankum before. Shame neither slowthai nor Mahalia made the list; but hopefully Mahalia will get a BRIT nomination instead after kicking up a fuss about lack of R&B representation last time.

I imagine they wanted to avoid any controversy by including Slowthai, he’s in court next year for alleged rape.

Lankum are a folk band from Ireland, if you have 9 spare minutes and don't mind being filled with doom and anxiety this song is a great intense listen x qhqpQiXnFx0 And yeah I don't think slowthai is going near any awards nominations for the foreseeable future, understandably so as much as I enjoyed his album.
July 29, 20231 yr That's actually a really great list, although I'm a bit sad that Daniel Avery missed out - I guess Fred again.. and Shygirl are repping for electronica on this shortlist, and both v much deserve to be here, but I love that album so much I'm perhaps being slightly biased. Anyway rooting for my faves Young Fathers, Shygirl, Jessie Ware, Jockstrap and Loyle Carner. I haven't heard the Ezra Collective album but I have enjoyed quite a few of their singles playlisted on 6Music over recent years, inc. the collab with Loyle (tho I don't think that's on this new album).
July 29, 20231 yr Here for Shygirl too!! Raye or Jessie would be good winners as well I think the Young Fathers album would be pretty up your street as well if you've not heard!
