The fact this is charting and it’s simply listed as a playlist on Spotify  It’s essentially a Greatest Hits - a CD and vinyl release is coming but it’s going to be a 100+ week running smash platinum ‘album’ ala Becky Hill and Mabel.

To be fair Becky & Mabel’s we’re actual bodies of work which they then tagged on the singles to the end of, 90% of Joel’s new one has already been released witt only a small handful of songs still to be released

Unhealthy sticking around nicely in the Top 20.

Summer of 69 still on the Top 100 this week.A song that deserves a much higher peak than it has achieved.

Why is Oliver Anthony referred to as “Oliver Anthony Music”?

Like “Oliver Anthony Music has debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100” - tis weird.

Sad for Birdy.

Apparently he goes by ‘Oliver Anthony Music’ as he makes music he thinks his late grandfather Oliver Anthony would have liked.

By this point, it's already bigger than Everything I Do (I Do It For You) in total chart figures [2.435M to 2M].

24 Oliver Anthony Music - Rich Men North of Richmond *

Makes me physically sick to see this racist & antisemitic song this high. This is why the internet can be the pits at times.

I can understand (but not appreciate) it’s success in the US but I honestly cannot fathom one iota why it is charting here. Like seriously why??

Agreed especially after Jason Aldean flopped. Guess it's going to be the first alt right top 40 hit here. That '17 million f***.offs' song by Dominic Frisby fell short and I wouldn't quite count the Vera Lynn 'Land of Hope and Glory' song in itself (if the reason it charted was some manufactured culture war thing)

I can sadly see many more charting..

I'm not surprised at all that this has resonated more in the UK (and holding up better in the US as well) than Jason Aldean, I think the appeal of this one is a little more widespread and nuanced than the Jason song whose appeal was pretty much completely MAGA types supporting it for a week to make a point, and I guess just regular Jason Aldean fans although prior to the controversy I think it had been on course to be one of his least successful singles ever. As I posted in the iTunes thread last week I have seen plenty of people online who actually just really like it as a song, and I think the overtly political / ugly aspects of the actual song (ignoring the discourse around it) are minimal enough that I could imagine it getting a fair number of casual streams from people who aren't right wingers at all, in fact some parts of the lyrics can easily be interpreted as left leaning if anything (certainly anti-capitalist), it's only really a couple of lines in the second verse where he goes off the rails and into MAGA mode a little. That and it's dropped at a time when country music is having a bit of a 'moment' and specifically his more 'alternative' country sound has been booming a bit (see Zach Bryan and Tyler Childers who I've seen him compared to a lot).

I think this thread is the first time I've seen someone accusing the song of being antisemitic... although on that note I did discover the other day that his YouTube channel has a public playlist titled 'videos that make your noggin bigger' which contains a couple of 'Jews did 9/11' truther type videos which is kind of throwing some major doubt into him claiming to be a political centrist lol.

(I am not in any way supporting him / the song btw, just playing devil's advocate to try and make sense of its success)

But those other examples at least make sense as they are tied to the politics/culture of this country. Had a Brexit protest song made the Billboard top 40 it would be equally mind boggling.

The only example of anything to do with US politics making the UK chart was American Idiot in response to Trump and that was specifically over him visiting the UK.

Surprised that 'Talibans' and 'How Does it Feel' are already on ACR. Seem a mite too early! Not that I'm going to miss the former.
What does MAGA stand for in Bre’s post? (Apologies for ignorance)
Make America Great Again (Trump's election slogan)

Ah ofc thank you, never seen it used as an acronym before but probably should’ve worked it out

wow really? didn't know!

Does Doja Cat have a chance at #1 this this week over Dua or is next week the week looking more likely. I know it's already 3+ days into the tracking week. It's just Doja seems to be having a viral-ish moment but (so far) more so in the US, Canada, Aus., NZ & some other places. #1 on Spotify and Apple (or close to it). What kind of #s would Doja need in the UK atp to overcome Dua (if it's even possible). Yes, well aware Dua has cassettes too lol. Thx

don't think Doja has a chance this week

Dua is ahead by quite a bit + she'll add the real cassettes on Thu

'Richmond' has a longer chart life because the "buzz" is not as manufactured as with Aldean - his song only charted after the video release. I can see 'Richmond' becoming a smaller version of Last Night by Wallen, without the massive airplay.

Its #1 position in the US is very much sales driven of course, it's not gigantic on streaming even though #1 on AM currently.

I'd argue it was totally manufactured, it's the opposite of natural and organic.

it's all being backed by conservatives with money with Jason Howerton being the mastermind behind this.
