July 6Jul 6 Not surprised Minions couldn't beat TS5... I've seen precisely zero hype for that film (in fact, I only found out the film existed when I saw it in the 'next week releases' bit on last week's chart posted here oops)
July 7Jul 7 I think they made a mistake releasing minions so close to Toy story 5 the local Reel cinema is literally covered in Toy story decorations atm,I think this year could be the first time there are too many huge releases Released so some of the usual big hitters sufferIts weird illumination have released 2 big films in the same year as well
Yesterday at 16:141 day Dunno what position Moana is in (I'm assuming #2, behind TS5... But will see when the box office is updated later), but ever since it was announced a few years back, I've always felt like it's far too soon for a live action remake. The original was a relative slow-burner itself, and has only really started to be considered much of a classic in the last 5 or so years I think(?).If they wanted to do a live action, they should have chosen something from the 90s really, so that they could capitalise on nostalgia... Moana needs a good 10 more years until it reaches that point!
Yesterday at 16:281 day Its at 1 but barely, Toy Story 5 was right behind it. Kinda disappointed Evil Dead Burn didn't even hit a million

This is up on the £2,214,898 (#2) that the original animated film opened to ten years ago. That film managed to gross above £20 million in the end but it was on Disney+ where it really found its audience and it was reported to be the most streamed film of all-time. However, when compared to the sequel, ‘Moana 2’ (£12,021,342, #1, 2024) released just two years ago that made £42.5 million in total, this result doesn’t look impressive. More damningly, this is about four times lower than last summer’s Disney remake ‘Lilo & Stitch’ (£9,568,923, £8 million without previews, #1) and is even under last year’s maligned ‘Snow White’ (£3,856,173, #1). Maybe this was released too soon and I’m sure that’s going to be a criticism that’s thrown around a lot in the near future but I wouldn’t completely write the film off yet. It’s never going to be on the same level as the sequel but with summer holidays starting soon and eventually some milder weather, this could still recover to be an ok hit. With kids films dominating the top three, Sony tried to provide some counter-programming with ‘Evil Dead Burn’ (£912,234, £697k without previews, #4). This is a poor opening for the long-running franchise and is a big fall from the £1,477,840 that ‘Evil Dead Rise’ put up to debut at #2 in 2023 on its way to £5.5 million and is also below the £1,375,842 that the 2013 reboot ‘Evil Dead’ debuted with in 2013 (#3). This one sees a new director, Sébastien Vaniček take charge and has a lot to live up to seeming that the previous two directors in the franchise, Fede Álvarez and Lee Cronin, have both went on to become accomplished in the genre. Even if it’s a low opening, it’s already made over $40 million worldwide against a $20 million budget so will be very profitable. The final new entry this week comes from India and is ‘Dhamaal 4’ (£116,477, #10). From the poster, this looks like a pirate film. This is down on the other two sequels: ‘Double Dhamaal’ (£117,285, #10, 2011) and ‘Total Dhamaal’ (£250,601, #9, 2019) but is still above the first film (£107,118, #13, 2007). This was a rough weekend overall with no real decent holds but ‘Toy Story 5’ will not be complaining too much with a 57% drop in week 4, even with it losing top spot. The film has climbed up to #2 in the YTD chart with £42.5 million but it’s now tracking behind ‘Toy Story 4’ for the first time which had £42,598,992 at the same time. How it holds after holidays begin will be key in deciding if will match that films final total. ‘Minions & Monsters’ doesn’t have a terrible hold (-61%, -51% without previews) and has passed £7 million but this is still less than what ‘Despicable Me 4’ opened with in 2024. It’s another film that is desperate for kids to be off school. Last week’s other big release, ‘The Invite’ isn’t doing too bad, having the best hold of the weekend (when you take out its previews): -46% or -41% without previews. With £1.8 million, it has already beaten Olivia Wilde’s first feature, ‘Booksmart’ which closed with £1.5 million. ‘Obsession’ has a similar hold in week 9 (-46%). It’s now passed £18 million and is looking to be the rare horror-hit that reached the elusive £20 million gross. ‘Supergirl’ is still DOA after losing another 66%. It has made £5 million+ which means that it has overtaken ‘Blue Beetle’ and might reach ‘Shazam! Fury Of The Gods’ but that awful 2023 slate for DC is not good company to be in. ‘Jackass: Best And Last’ shreds 71% but this was still enough for it to pass £2 million while the final holder this week, ‘Disclosure Day’ (-58%) continues it’s under the radar, unremarkable run as it ends the weekend just short of £12.5 million. There are two further new entries in the #11-15 section: ‘I, Nobody’ (#12) and 'Lenin' (#14). Next week sees the openings of ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘A Year In London’. We also get a re-release of ‘Wallace And Gromit: A Matter Of Loaf And Death & A Close Shave’. Can any of them top the charts?~Summer Box Office Top 5:1. (01) Toy Story 5 - £42,426,0392. (02) The Devil Wears Prada 2 - £34.2 million3. (03) Obsession - £18,185,9654. (04) Star Wars: The Mandalorian And Grogu - £15.8 million5. (05) Backrooms - £12,913,766No changes to the top 5 but Disclosure Day is starting to push Backrooms close and could find itself in the top 5 next week.
5 hours ago5 hr 11 minutes ago, LewisGT said:and is even under last year’s maligned ‘Snow White’ (£3,856,173, #1).Wtf I did not expect Moana to open lower than the new Minions, and barely higher than the original animation. I guess they've all been released too close together (like how often is the top 3 made up entirely of kids/family movies?) but I thought Minions would suffer the most. Will be interesting to see how they play out over the summer holidays. Having seen Moana this afternoon, I'm certainly not mad about this underwhelming opening, as poor critical reviews aren't going to stop Disney, but maybe box office figures will send them the message that they need to stop being so lazy.
2 hours ago2 hr Minions should never of been released 2 weeks after Toy story all the Toy story marketing is still dominating they should ot waited until August at least but then spiderman is out this week isnt itI think the summer release schedule is too bloated this yearMoana I think its problem is its too soon for a live action movie the original isn't even that old and moana 18 months ago
2 hours ago2 hr Haha at Disney with all their fails. They really think they can get a hit every time.
1 hour ago1 hr Glad to see Moana underperform (although I agree it could well do better with the summer holidays coming up a bit like Mufasa did), that goes to new levels of pointless as well as a shameless money-grab for Dwayne Johnson given the film's not even ten years old and had a sequel just a few years ago!Intrigued for the numbers for The Odyssey, I can't really call it, early critical responses seem to be positive (at least ahead of the embargo tomorrow) but the trailers sparked a hell of a lot of negativity (some of it the usual racist/sexist trash but some I do kind of get, I really hope it's better than that suggests).
