LLiterallythis every cinema round me had loads of Toy story promotional stuff still up and zero minions when that was released although it is still the worst in the franchise

On 5th October, I have a feeling that Verity is gonna beat Digger to the top of the box office even though there’s more hype for the latter. Cinemas have already put up tickets for Verity but not for Digger and my local cinema is showing Verity in the big screens

Ending the Spider-Man/Odyssey monopoly after six-weeks, we have a brand-new top 3 this week led by legacy-sequel ‘Practical Magic 2’ (£2,798,771) that tops the chart 27 years after the original did the same in January 1999. That film only made about £3.3 million in total which this will beat in the week. Susanne Bier takes the directing job this time with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman returning as two witches cursed to never be able to fall in love.

 

Opening at #2 and almost getting the #1 with previews, music documentary ‘Oasis: Don’t Look Back In Anger’ (£2,656,988, £1.6 million without previews) has one of the best openings of the genre of all-time. Earning the bronze medal behind ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ (£5,729,998, #1, 2023) and ‘Michael Jackson: This Is It’ (£4,877,255, #1, 2009). This tracks last year’s historic comeback of their stadium tour and performed much stronger than their previous documentary, ‘Supersonic’ (£542,263, #5, 2016).

 

Opening at #3 is a film that ironically sounds a bit dry when you hear of its concept (discussions in the war room about if the weather will be good enough to perform the D-Day landings), ‘Pressure’ (£2,058,089, £1.5 million without previews). But this have earned rave reviews and has opened strong despite not making much impact in its summer release in the US. Andrew Scott leads the cast and it’s his biggest opener as a lead (third overall behind ‘Spectre’ and ‘1917’) and sees recent Oscar-winner Brendan Fraser in a supporting role.

 

‘Fall 2’ (subtitled ‘Deadpoint’ in the US) opens at #6 this week with £479,264 (£372k without previews). This is the sequel to the 2022 film that saw two girls get stuck up atop a 2000ft broadcasting tower. This sequel goes larger, moving the action to Thailand, and is pays off with a debut double the £220,270 that ‘Fall’ (#13, 2022) opened with. The film opened a week earlier in the US and missed their weekly top 10.

 

The final new entry this week is ‘Runner’ (£382,666, #9). Not to be confused with the Gal Gadot disaster ‘The Runner’ which released on Prime last weekend, this is instead an buddy comedy starring Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson as two people who have to transport an organ for a vital transplant. We also see a re-entry for the 45^th anniversary re-release of ‘Raiders Of The Lost Ark’ (£241,150, #9).

 

After six weeks at #1, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is finally off the top spot and falls to #5 after a 49% drop which is pretty much in line with what it’s done every week since release. It is now the 3^rd biggest film of all-time after passing the £98 million of ‘No Time To Die’. ‘The Odyssey’ finally climbs above ‘Spider-Man’ after weeks of threatening but does it a week too late as it falls to #4 (-42%). With £84.5 million, this is now also in the top 10 films of all-time.

 

The final two films holding in the top 10 this week are ‘Insidious: Out Of The Further’ (-40%) and ‘Coyote Vs. Acme’ (-52%). The former is now the second biggest film in the franchise while the later has nearly hit £2 million.

 

There are no further new entries in the top 15 but we do see ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ (#15) climb into it in its second week.

 

Next week sees the openings of ‘Resident Evil’, ‘Shaun The Sheep: The Beast Of Mossy Bottom’, ‘Bad Apples’, ‘De Gaulle: Part 2: Liberte’, ‘Premature’, ‘The Cycle Of Love’ and ‘Queen At Sea’.  We also see re-releases of ‘The Transformers: The Movie’ and ‘Whisper Of The Heart’.  Can any of them top the charts?

Obsession and Minions & Monsters are pretty much level now. I couldn't tell you which one has made more but the momentum is with Minions.

Should be an easy number 1 for Resident Evil next week with the big global projections

I wish Alejandro G Iñárritu would bring the release date of Digger at least 2 days forward so it can have a head start against Verity

Really excited to see Resident Evil’s numbers! It seems to have majorly overperformed! $60m in the US and it’s already the highest grossing RE domestically!

Maybe PM2 will be a long runner with long leg!!!! A week one flop hasn't doomed it yet!!

The year of horror continues with ‘Resident Evil’ blows past expectations with a £4,211,819 debut. This is the second-biggest horror opening of the year, just behind the £4,281,936 of ‘Backrooms’ from May. This is the eighth film in the classic horror-video game franchise and is the second attempt at rebooting after ‘Welcome To Racoon City’ (£253,199, #8) flopped in 2021. However, this time Zach Cregger, fresh off the success of ‘Weapons’ last year, was recruited to write and direct and it’s continued his hot streak. This has smashed the previous record opening for the franchise, ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ (£1,690,655, #1, 2010) which rode the 3D craze wave to earn £4.8 million. A figure which will remain the peak of the franchise for about another 2 days. ‘Weapons’ made £11.9 million last year which this will be smashing.

 

Boosted to #3 thanks to extensive previews, ‘Shaun The Sheep: The Beast Of Mossy Bottom’ (£1,494,260, £1 million) is the third entry in the ‘Wallace & Gromit’ spin-off series, all of which have opened in third position. This debut is somewhere between the other two entries. ‘Shaun The Sheep Movie’ (£2,095,061, #3, 2015) was a massive hit, making £13.8 million in total while ‘A Shaun The Sheep Movie: Farmageddon’ (£1,305,511, #3, 2019) could only hit £7.1 million. That was the last Aardman film to hit the big-screen after ‘Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget’ was released on Netflix in 2023 and ‘Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl’ was shown on BBC in 2024.

 

The final new entry this week is ‘Bad Apples’ (£486,690, £435k without previews). This is a dark dramady which stars Saoirse Ronan as a teacher that kidnaps a problem student. This is a consistent opening with Ronan’s last releases ‘The Outrun’ (£449,590, #4, 2024) and ‘Blitz’ (£163,124, #15 in limited release, £245,688, #8 in wide release). This week also sees a re-entry for the 40^th anniversary of ‘The Transformers: The Movie’ (£432,893, £272k without previews, #9).

 

Last week’s #1, ‘Practical Magic 2’ has a decent hold (-46%) and, with £5.8 million, has already outgrossed the original film. ‘Pressure’ also has a great hold (-48%, -26% without previews). Without previews, this is the best hold of the week and it feels like the sort of film that will stick around for a while. ‘Oasis: Don’t Look Back In Anger’ has a drop more typical of special event films (-82%, -70% without previews). It’s only in cinemas until Thursday but should get the less than £100k it needs to overtake ‘Epic: Elvis Presley In Concert” from earlier in the year.

 

The summer-dominating duo of ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ are still hanging around with drops of 34% and 32% respectively. ‘Spider-Man’ has now hit £99 million so our third ever £100 million hit is coming. It’s so close but I think ‘Skyfall’ (£103 million) is just going to be out of reach. ‘Insidious: Out Of The Further’ holds for a 5^th week (57%) is now about £300k away from being the franchise’s biggest hit.

 

There are two further new entries in the #11-#15 section: 'Pulp: What Do You Do For An Encore' (#13) and ‘Pradhama Drishtiya Kuttakkar’ (#15).

 

Next week sees the openings of ‘Sense And Sensibility’, ‘Heart Of The Beast’, ‘The Misanthrope: NT Live 2026’, ‘Hope’, ‘Her Private Hell’, ‘Meesaya Murukku 2’, ‘Boorman And The Devil’, ‘Shadows Of Beirut’ and ‘North Sea, Nature Untamed’. We also see re-releases of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Manhunter’.  Can any of them top the charts?
