24 Christmas songs in last year's equivalent Monday update, 32 this year assuming number 6 is also a Christmas song.

#6 is Jack Harlow so no (full update is available to see for yourself by clicking the link in the post)

Sorry, I edited my post before you corrected me. I now count 30 Christmas songs unless You're Losing Me is some sort of a Christmas song,

You're Losing Me is not a Xmas song :D

I’m astonished the OCC haven’t done anything about the Xmas takeover as now the beloved Xmas No.1, which it still loves to hype up every year, will just be Wham! every time, short of a miracle. The public aren’t going to care about that and the one chart story that is still guaranteed column inches every year will be gone. Nobody will ever campaign for it because you’re not going to get past a song being played 7 million times a week on Spotify alone, especially as downloads continue to decline.

But I do understand it’s not an easy thing to change, as it would lead to a very unrepresentative chart if the Christmas songs weren’t visible in some way at this time of year.

Also, as much as I LOVE Sam and his song, it still feels wrong that these songs are here simply due to asking Alexa to play Christmas music and it being autoplayed. I wish there was some way to give passive plays, but particularly from Alexa, a lower weighting.

I wouldn’t class SOWK as a Christmas song. It’s not written about Christmas and has nothing to do with it. Shall we consider every non-Christmas song which has been covered for a John Lewis advert a Christmas song then? No. And also, Lily Allen’s version appeared on a numbered Now and it’s very rare in this day and age for them to include a Christmas song on a numbered Now and it also hasn’t appeared on any of their Christmas spin-offs. Saying that, I’m surprised it wasn’t included on disc 4 of last years Now Christmas

We have this every year! At the end of the day, it's only in the charts every year because it's Christmas. Therefore it makes sense to remove it in a list showing what the Top 40 might be like if it wasn't the Christmas period.

Edit: Unless I'm missing it, it's not even in the midweek update!

Why is it in the charts if people aren't relating it to Christmas, then????

(it's not charting at the moment btw)

But yes, as much as it's not inherently a Christmas song, it obviously behaves like one. Same as 'The Power Of Love' and 'Stay Another Day'.

SOWK shows up every Christmas because some people have got it in their heads that it’s a Christmas song. If people wanna think that, then let’s class Ellie Goulding, Slow Moving Millie, Tom Odell, Vaults and Bastille’s covers as Christmas songs then. We All Stand Together by Paul McCartney & Frog Chorus is more of a Christmas song than SOWK but no one refers to it as a Christmas song

If they actually returned to the charts every year then yes they would be counted as Christmas songs as well for this purpose x

I only listen to the Bastille cover of REO Speedwagon at Christmas, it's a lovely festive-sounding tune.

The "That's Christmas" TV channel does!

Also nice to see Nat King Cole in. Hope that gets a play if it stays in!

The most beautiful Xmas ballad ❤️

It has never been Christmas number 1 to date.

At the same time the high chart entry for Sam’s song for instance means radio will play it and they could become popular further Xmas hits!

Also 'Never Had a Dream Come True' and '2 Become 1'.

Agreed. Just realised that Dean Martin or Frank Sinatra's 'Let it Snow Let it Snow Let it Snow!' doesn't mention Christmas or anything related once in the lyrics. It's just about weather which hardly ever happens in the UK at Christmas but no one's going to say that isn't a Christmas song.

That is the most depressing/boring chart possible lmao. I'll check out until January I guess because I'm such a Grinch 🤭

31 Xmas songs in the Top 40, oh blimey. That is depressing. I'll check out also with Jack til January as I'm a Grinch apparently.
