This is based purely off my last.fm stats so just counts my Spotify plays but is going to be mostly accurate. It's definitely been Taylor Swift's year with 'The Eras Tour' breaking countless records both in live concert and movie metrics. Alongside the still frequent re-releases she's able to stay at #5 here, just as she was last year. Olivia Rodrigo and Leah Kate are almost neck-to-neck here and could easily swap places in the final few days of the year. The difference so far is that I was listening to Leah's 'Alive and Unwell' EP a lot back in January which has allowed her to keep a tiny lead so far. Madison Beer was my runner-up for 2022 and it's silver for her again in 2023. Will she ever be able to get the top spot? I'm seeing all of my artists between #2-#5 live next year so expect them to stay picking up tons of streams. However, seeing Maisie Peters twice this year alongside the release of her splendid 2nd album has allowed her to romp home here with over 2,500 scrobbles. For comparison, last year's #1 (BLACKPINK) picked up just 1,095 scrobbles. Weirdly enough, they end up dropping to #12 in a year where the focus was on their solo releases, which is exactly where this year's winner, Maisie, finished last time out. I'll update this on 1st Jan as there's still time for things to change. For example, Tate is certain to overtake Kim Petras for #8 and the race for the top 10 is well and truly on.

Kicking off my countdown is Bebe Rexha with an album track from 'Bebe'. It got a little bit short-changed in my chart on release, only managing 2 weeks in my top 20. Despite a few more tracks from the album still to come, this is the one I've been going back to most over the past few months. The chorus is undeniably catchy and the key-change is really fun.

With Olivia's, Madison Beer's and Leah Kate's albums all coming out within a week, my chart was packed at the time and some of the album tracks missed out on their deserving peaks, with one such example being 'pretty isn't pretty'. In terms of lyrical content, this is the 'Jealousy, Jealousy' of 'GUTS' but the sound is something completely fresh for Olivia. This sounds much more 80s and new-wave inspired compared to the harder styles of her other rockier hits. I would love to hear her try more like this in the future.

It felt like we we're getting to a point of diminishing returns and Dove had waited too long to release her debut album but, in the end, I ended up being pleasantly surprised at the quality of the project and while it wasn't able to return her to the EOY top 100, 'God's Game' is the first of two entries in the #101-#120 section. Maybe if this was released earlier than December it could have sneaked in. Her falsetto voice paired with the dramatic instrumentation really creates a haunting atmosphere.

It's been Maisie Peters's year when it comes to my music tastes in 2023 and this is the first of 3 that he has just in the #101-#120 section. If I was judging this purely off how many plays they've had, her whole album would be in my top 20 with the least popular album tracks all being =16th. Lil Yachty decided that he wants to be seen as a serious artist in 2023. He released his experimental album 'Let's Start Here' and jumped on tracks with JID & Cole and tried to rap-rap to decent success. Look, it's obvious that he's not as lyrical nor as able to find interesting pockets and flows as the two Dreamville greats but he is able to hold his own and gets some nice bars off. The chemistry is really there on 'Van Gogh' and the transitions between the two rappers are very smooth and Yachty probably sounds the best he ever has.

Nice to see Glue Song pop up here - it never did enough to make my own chart but it was great to see her get a Top 40 hit as a solo artist!

The Good Witch was superior to Maisie's debut album for me, I liked it a lot!

The provocative title meant that this was the track from the 'Taylor's Version' of '1989' that had the most pre-release hype but, in the end, it ended up being in the middle. This applies both to in my charts, where two of tracks have made my top 100 and in the official charts where it this debuted at #5 behind two of the other tracks. This is a nice ballad-y track where I think people wanted something more upbeat and aggressive.

Summer Walker released an EP earlier in the year which was a nice release but it did feel like there were reasons none of the tracks had been included on albums. The highlight was this unexpected collab with Childish Gambino who hadn't released new music for a while. It's a very chill project on the whole with Gambino providing one of the most monotone verses of all-time that fits the track like a glove.

'Call On Me' was the final pre-release single before the 'Bebe' album and it looked promising for the track, reaching my top 10 but when the album was released it didn't end up being one of my top favourites and got a bit lost in the shuffle. This felt like a proper throwback to the type of dance track David Guetta was dominating the charts with 10 years ago. Bebe will have 3 tracks in my top 100.

Not satisfied with releasing her debut studio album this year, Kim decided to also release the scrapped album that was meant to be her debut 'Problématique'. Despite not including the brilliant 'Future Starts Now', this was probably still the stronger of the two albums with one of the highlights being this Paris Hilton assisted track. This is exactly what you'd expect a team up between the two to sound. Kim will have four appearances in my top 100.

Talking of deluxe versions, Tyler also decided to release a deluxe version of his 2021 Grammy-winning album 'CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST'. This seemed to be a lot of people's least favourite of the 8 new tracks, citing it's repetitiveness and unfinished nature but I just find it so fun. How could you not get 'You should be my boyfriend girlfriend' stuck in your head?

Call On Me is lots of fun! Bebe wasn't wrong about that being the sister song to Sacrifice.

From the songs, pretty isn’t pretty is my fave guts song! So beautiful. I also love all American bitch and watch is a highlight from tgw! Slut is also gorj!

 

Out of the handful of songs I've heard so far you have picked 2 of my highlights from the album tracks of 'GUTS', I still think the album is overall a bit of a step down from the quality of 'SOUR' but it still has its share of great songs, I feel like 'pretty isn't pretty' is a little underrated. 'Glue Song' is super cute as well and I also liked '"Slut!"' quite a bit although I see why the initial hype around it died off quickly (and 'Is It Over Now?' is definitely the better song so fair x).

Melodic Dave was so close to getting a French rap hit in the UK top 40 with Tiakola collaboration 'Meridian'. I wouldn't feel too sorry for Dave, he still has 3 tracks to come in my top 100. It took me a few listens to get used to it but once I adapted to the new sound, I found it really fun. Even if the highlight is still the verse where Dave raps.

Dove had originally teased this in October 2022 under the original title of 'Evil Woman'. I'm not quite sure why the name change occurred but it does make it more mysterious I think. It's enough unorthodox release from Dove that I could see others finding really annoying. The album release gave it a second wind and almost bagged Dove a 3rd consecutive year with a EOY top 100 but it was just not to be.

'Therapy' is a victim of the album of it's on as it would have easily been higher if released another time. There are 11 tracks from 'The Good Witch' still to come in my top 100 and some needed to miss out. Maisie slays the bridges on this album and the one here is no exception.

In the unluckiest position of the year is Lil Yahcty and J. Cole's 'The Secret Recipe'. This is the 2nd year in a row for Cole at the #101 spot with 'Stick' also landing there last year. This is the most focused I've ever heard Yachty and the 'Checkers' bar is legitimately one of the strongest of the year but he gets absolutely blown out of the water by Cole. While Lil Boat may have earned some respect this year, there's still levels to this and he's nowhere near the level of Cole who just sounds like it's coming effortlessly to him here. He keeps the same rhyme pattern throughout the whole verse. Who else does that? :o There's no Yachty in the top 100 but there is still some Cole to come.
