As a lot of you are probably aware, Cher's new Christmas banger is on the verge of cracking the Top 40. It is currently at #42 in the latest midweeks.

If it goes Top 40 on Friday, at 77, 60(!) years into her career, Cher will be the first artist to score a new UK Top 40 hit single in 7 consecutive decades!

If you would like to help her out, iTunes has 10 different versions that are available to download: the album version, the lyric video and 8 fantastic remixes.

Remember - it's better to download each remix separately (rather than the whole remix EP at once), as each would count as one sale.

They are also available on:

Amazon - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CNV58H13/

7digital - https://uk.7digital.com/artist/cher/release...-mixes-34973911

Qobuz - https://www.qobuz.com/gb-en/album/dj-play-a...r/m89345sis9zwa

The song is being boosted this week by being on a major Spotify playlist though and we don’t know if that’ll maintain next week
sure it will, it's a xmas miracle that playlist even updates once a year

This campaign should start on Friday in my opinion

Nothing is guaranteed for next week, since all Christmas songs will likely see an increase in consumption.

Cher has climbed to #40 in the latest midweeks. She can do it this week! Needless to say, very few sales could separate the #40 & #41 positions.

Agreed it’s better to try for this week as the bar for #40 will likely be a lot higher next week!

Cher breaks all-time UK chart record with DJ Play a Christmas Song

Pop icon becomes first solo artist to score Top 40 hits with new material in seven consecutive decades and oldest female to secure a Top 40 placing on the Official Singles Chart

Pop icon Cher breaks UK Official Chart records today with DJ Play a Christmas Song.

Cher becomes the first female artist to achieve a Top 40 hit with new material on the Official Singles Chart across seven consecutive decades. While Cher's UK chart debut originally came in the form of Sonny & Cher’s chart-topping duet I Got You Babe in 1965, her debut solo single All I Really Want To Do broke the UK Top 40 the same month, and Cher has gone on to chart a solo single of new material in the Top 40 in every decade since.

At 77 years, 7 months old, Cher also becomes the oldest solo female performer to secure a Top 40 on the Official Singles Chart with the lead single from her 27th studio album Christmas DJ Play a Christmas Song breaks all the way in to the Top 20 at Number 20 this week.

This means Cher surpasses previous record-holder Shirley Bassey, the Welsh singer-songwriter being 70 years, 4 months old when The Living Tree peaked at Number 37 in 2007.

Captain Sir Tom Moore holds the record for the oldest artist to score a UK Number 1 single, being 99 years, 11 months old when Michael Ball collaboration You’ll Never Walk Alone reached Number 1 in 2020.

DJ Play a Christmas Song also becomes Cher's highest-charting single in the UK in a decade, to boot. Her last to achieve such success was I Hope You Find It, which peaked at Number 25 in 2013.

Cher also becomes the first-ever female artist to secure UK Top 40 singles spanning seven decades with original material.

Since the release of Sonny & Cher's chart-topping I Got You Babe in 1965, Cher's scored at least one Top 40 hit in each decade since.

The decade in which Cher notched-up the most UK Top 40 singles was the 1990s, with the icon amassing a staggering 23 over a 10-year period.

This, of course, includes what was arguably her career renaissance with 1998 Number 1 record Believe, which celebrated its 25th anniversary earlier this year.

Speaking on Cher's success, Martin Talbot, Chief Executive Officer, Official Charts, says:

"Cher cements her position as a living legend this week, notching up two incredible landmarks - becoming the oldest living female to secure a Top 40 single and the only female solo artist to claim an Official Top 40 single in seven consecutive decades.

"It is incredible to consider that WHAM!’s Andrew Ridgeley and George Michael were barely taking their first steps when Cher was enjoying her first UK Number 1; almost 20 years before Last Christmas was released. Cher, we salute you!"

I don't see why they've needed to include 'female' as a qualifier in that article, it only makes it sound less impressive, especially as this is probably a pretty rare case of a record of this nature being held by a woman. (I guess fair enough if they're counting Paul McCartney combined with The Beatles but why not mention it if that's the case like they did with Tom Moore...)

Also after clicking the link I see they already did a hasty rewrite after they realised this song actually charted higher than 'I Hope You Find It' :P

I don't get why they say "first ever female artist" when she is in fact the first ever solo artists... it says that in the title but then reverts back to "female artist" in the article.
Ah I didn't spot that it said 'solo artist' in the first line - but again even that's still an unnecessary qualifier because no group has done it either, unless I'm forgetting something really obvious the only other person who's done it is Paul McCartney.

Has Paul McCartney had a top 40 in the 20s decade? Is it The Beatles one recently?

Yeah 'Now And Then' is his only top 40 hit in the 20s.

The Beatles have 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 20s (they do have 10s as well if you count re-entries) and Paul solo has 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s so neither of them individually have 7 decades but Paul does if you combine them.
