What is streaming? What are the chart rules regarding streaming?

How many streams equals one download sale?

100 plays if you are on Spotify Premium, or 600 if you are using the ad-supported free tier. However you cannot simply play a song that many times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. The number changes to 200 or 1200 plays when a song moves to ACR. For more information on the rules of ACR see this thread.

 

How much does streaming contribute to the chart?

Streaming contributes over 90% to the singles chart as a whole. Spotify counts for at least half of this, with Apple Music and Amazon also big contributors. YouTube is also big however most of YouTube's streams are at the free tier so won't count for as much.

 

Why is my fave not doing well?

Is it being promoted on a major curated playlist, and/or going viral on TikTok? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists on Spotify from a UK standpoint. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist. Also, the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist. Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience, reality or campaign songs. Also keep in mind that it often takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.

 

My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping?

Not necessarily. Most songs debut relatively low as they aren't instantly well-known, and experience a sharp decline on Day 2 as they no longer have the promoted 'New Music Friday' effect. A lot of songs manage to recover through gaining popularity and additions to playlists. Exceptions to the rule of course come from massively hyped releases, such as the recent album impacts from Drake and Taylor Swift.

To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50', or click the link below. For the full top 200, use the link below to go to Spotify's website. You can also use the Kworb website which displays the data in an easier to read format and also contains additional information, however this is often out of date.

How often does the Spotify chart update?

It should update once every day, usually in the early afternoon - although on occasion there will be a delay.

 

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

Wow, that's a bumper increase in numbers for Sophie! Really hope it gets reset! Surreal seeing her in the Spotify top ten, the way she's kept her public profile up in various ways for over 20 years is so impressive to me as it's not like - beyond this song and Groovejet - she had multiple huge hits.

Some of these NYE boosted tracks are fairly obscure... Like Cooler Than Me by Mike Posner on AM :lol:

 

I guess it just showcases how the key streaming audience is millennial adults now.

I'm happy to see Padam Padam get such a great boost on Spotify! :wub: It's interesting to me that it didn't do similarly well on Apple Music though, even though they were relatively far more supportive of the song than Spotify was while it was a new hit.

It was already a classic and memorable hit, but this really takes it to a new level. I really need to watch Saltburn and see what the fuss is all about with the scene it's included in. Like gooddelta said in the previous thread, I really struggle to believe that it's 22 years old! I wish it had been able to sneak a week at #1 in January 2002 instead of Daniel Bedingfield reclaiming it. I shall manifest Sophie getting to #1 in 2024 instead... :cool:

Wow, that's a bumper increase in numbers for Sophie! Really hope it gets reset! Surreal seeing her in the Spotify top ten, the way she's kept her public profile up in various ways for over 20 years is so impressive to me as it's not like - beyond this song and Groovejet - she had multiple huge hits.

 

I saw Sophie in one of the New Years playlists so that probably helped her a bit yesterday too. Hopefully her label will get her on more playlists now.

 

As for her career, I don't find it that surprising, because yes she only had 2 massive hits really but she had a lot of normal-sized hits stretching over an entire decade. Groovejet in 2000 all the way to her last hit which I would say was Heartbreak in 2009 and that helps so much for a pop star. For example, imagine if Aloe Blacc or Iggy Azalea were getting regular hit songs every couple of years from 2014 to 2023 they would be SO much more famous now, even if none of them were as big as the ones at the beginning.

It's not that NOBODY remembers it, just cannot see it as one of the most relevant NYE party song for anyone. Choices are made by the streaming platforms every day though. AM chose Just Dance by Gaga instead of Poker Face for instance.

 

Disappointing that Mr. Brightside only managed #11 on Spotify. #6 on Apple is crazy tho, surely it has to chart top 40 this week

That boost for Mason & Princess Supeestar is the same for Sophie! I don’t think it was a NYE boost in the same way the others in the NYE list are. That is just growing in popularity due to the hype around ‘Saltburn’ currently.

I would like to see the streaming thread changed to weekly as well tbh, would make it easier to search back for where songs were charting on a given day without having to guesstimate (as much) what page that would be on, especially for Apple Music since that doesn't have an archive website.

 

Sophie in the top 10 and Mason top 100 *.* Saltburn soundtrack really popping off. Hope the momentum will still continue for a while and we see the latter re-entering the top 40. I wondered the other day if Sophie was on track to do a Kate Bush but she's not climbing quite as quickly as that and Noah does have a pretty sizeable lead so not holding my breath for that. My dad was actually watching Saltburn on the TV the other day and I didn't realise what it was until I heard 'Murder On The Dancefloor' playing so I've unwittingly heard most of the dialogue of the film :lol: may have paid more attention if I knew what it was...

 

Was highkey hoping for a new Spotify peak for 'Mr. Brightside' today tbh but alas not quite x Oops at the New Year's Eve surge throwing Zach/Kacey and J.I.D back down to the depths of the lower half of the top 100 again for a day but we do love to see 'Hey Ya!' in the top 40 x Also thank god 'Dance Monkey' seems to have been vanquished from the NYE canon this year!

Have just now found out that The Weeknd also had a Fortnite promotion recently (as well as Eminem) so that probably explains why 'Popular' and 'One Of The Girls' both had such a resurgence in December / carrying over to the new year!
