The Weeknd-One of the Girls was added to HH at the start of December, and after that it started charting, that's the reason I think

Popular was still bizarrely high on HH one month ago, crazy high on HH for the last 6 months actually, always in their top 20

A bit disastrous for Dua that Dance the Night is still outperforming Houdini!
  • Author

only due to the EOY/NYE effect.

Houdini is still doing rather well even if it’s clearly not going to be one of her biggest ever hits.

I don't see how it's disastrous having two big hits at the same time? Plus "Dance the Night" got a boost from NYE/year-end playlists I believe? "Houdini" is ahead of it on both Apple Music & Amazon and will likely climb a bunch on spotify with the NYE effect fading.

on Amazon, Houdini is #1

although Noah is #4+13+23 so probably #1 combined

Mr Brightside flopping only at #18

Andy Stewart - "Auld Lang Syne" currently #1 on Amazon now. Also Jack Harlow was #1 on the prime chart (currently #2). Dua is #3.

Oh yes Tomcraft could really do with a nice streaming uplift especially since I believe it's still one of the only #1s that's not certified silver iirc?

I wouldn’t call Houdini a big hit, it debuted high due to hype but has only declined since and the reactions I’ve seen have been pretty lukewarm

Houdini wouldn't have left the top 10 yet if the Christmas songs weren't a thing ( :gino: ), in fact it was the fourth highest non-festive track last week so a strong top 40 re-entry is very likely. It's definitely a big hit in my eyes, if not gigantic on the level of Dance the Night or Don't Start Now!

People in life have this weird kink where they like to build up upcoming talent or new things (music, celebrity, film etc) and then trash it once it's got too big and try and bring it down. We were all taken aback and loving the success of Future Nostalgia but there's been so much discourse in the last weeks online from people DESPERATE to brand Houdini a flop, just because it hasn't scaled the heights of Dance The Night or Don't Start Now, as if they can't wait to see her fall from the high she's just climbed to as a star.

It's just what they did to Gaga, after finding it her insanely exciting for the first few years and then once she became too big, it was like people were desperate to watch her fall. Only, due to her range of talent, she ended up bouncing back. Seems to happen to a lot of females actually, though maybe I'm just too online, and thus only noticing it for those acts in particular.

I never particularly liked Dua, and god forbid I acknowledge her new highly anticipated lead single failing to replicate the success of her recent hits eh? Also this is the first time I’ve ever mentioned Houdini anywhere so I don’t see how I’m part of this elaborate conspiracy theory to bring Dua down

I’ve also branded Ed’s new album a flop it’s not exclusive to women (for me anyway) x

That's not entirely aimed at you by the way, you're not the first on this site to post similar, I feel like the same discussion has been had numerous times at this point so you were just the latest to comment on it. I wouldn't have pointed it out if it was just one person because I think there's always merit to discussion. But, yeah, there does seem to be an odd air across social media that seems to be excited for Houdini's "underperformance" that's been going on since its first day.

on Apple:

78 NEW Lewis Capaldi - Strangers

one of the newbies from the Expanded version of the album, only this one is charting so far

All this!!

She is coming from huge success and Houdini has done well. The only "problem" with it is that DTN being a big MOVIE hit, it will get its share of attention during the awards season by default and Dua might need to prioritize it (perform it at the Oscars for instance). So, she might not be able to promote her newer singles 100%.

She is also making her name in Hollywood starring in the movie Argylle which is going to be released in theaters in February.

I think overall it’s wrong to compare a new era with the previous eras although it’s the obvious historical fall back but an artists biggest eras are so hard to replicate success wise and normally take on the phenomena of being hugely hyped upon first coke back release and if it doesn’t match then it’s a flop. Better just looking at it objectively!
Dua's Barbie song and Oscars? No way, it's gonna be Billie 1000%, Dua's shitty Barbie song won't get any awards.
Are all the requests for a weekly thread going to be acknowledged?

Houdini isn't just doing poorly when compared to her other singles but the hype/exposure it is getting too. It has been absolutely hammered by radio, it was the only song that held up next to the Christmas songs on radio and I'm sure is already back to #1. It has gotten big playlist support, the hype of Dua's name and physicals.

It is underperforming, it doesn't mean Dua is over and it also doesn't make people 'HATERSSSSZZZ!' to point this out.
