Even the singer’s sunniest tracks (“Can’t Feel My Face”, “Starboy”) feel anchored by darkness—the sense that pleasure is pain and beauty decays and you can’t have the night without the morning after. The brainchild of Toronto singer Abel Tesfaye, the project took off in 2011 with a string of mixtapes (later collected as 2012’s Trilogy) that forged cavernous, falsetto-driven R&B with narratives drenched in drugs, sex and other regrettable decisions—a sound both sensuous and detached, featherlight and dead heavy. One of the earliest musicians to find his footing on the internet, Tesfaye originally offered his music through YouTube and free downloads, a move that felt radical then but is common now. Ethiopian by heritage (his parents immigrated to Canada in the late ’80s, just before he was born), Tesfaye—out from behind the mask of making art online—has since come to represent the changing face of Toronto, rooting himself not just in an international musical community but in a specific diasporic experience. Tesfaye’s music has become a symbol of hedonism pushed to bleak excess, with a series of albums—including 2015’s Grammy-winning Beauty Behind the Madness, 2016’s multiplatinum Starboy and 2020’s dense and atmospheric After Hours—whose narrators can’t seem to say no even if they hate themselves for it later. And though his music has gotten a little brighter over time, the prevailing mood remains heavy, even unsettling—the ride you want more of even when you’ve had too much. Speaking to Apple Music about the persona behind his songs, Tesfaye said, “I’m a chill person. That guy is who I am, but it is who I am to myself and in my writing. Sometimes you take him and then you create more, and then it becomes this beast. You add more to him, and then it’s uncontrollable—its own character. It’s like Scarface, the villain: It’s horrible, but you can’t stop looking at it.” Though he didn’t release a new album in 2021, he was a constant part of the cultural conversation, releasing a slew of singles, performing at the Super Bowl and on Saturday Night Live (think: “Ladies and gentlemen, The Weeknd”) and winning the Apple Music Award for Artist of the Year. - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History The Weeknd 2012 37 Crew Love (Drake feat. February 16, 20242 yr Congrats Noah!!!! I really thought that this album was going to have a 'SOS' type chart run but I'm happy to have been proven wrong! Me buying 4 copies in one week defo helped :kink: I hate to say it, but I do like 'BURN' from Kanye's latest album (although I do think that's because of Ty Dolla $ign tbh). I hate 'BACK TO ME', Kanye's verse is just utter garbage and the hook is pretty bad as well. The features on 'CARNIVAL' are ok but the rest is rubbish...
February 16, 20242 yr Nice to see fast car in here! Hope lil boo thang disappears now. Yay for forever making a decent debut even if it’s not one of Noah’s best. Scared to start going the wrong way tho

That same year, Ella’s debut album, ‘Chapter One,’ (Salaam Remi, Babyface, Steve Mac, TMS) spawned her first Platinum selling album, making her one of only 3 UK artists to break Platinum in 2014. A revered artist, in 2015 Ella received two prestigious BRIT Award nominations for 'Best British Female' and 'Best British Single', rounding off the year with a landmark sell-out UK headline tour, which included two shows at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire. Following a whirlwind few years, Ella returned to the studio to being work on her next project. During the process she continued to collaborate with some of the biggest names in music, appearing on hits produced by superstar DJ’s Kygo and Sigma. She also returned to the live stage, touring with the likes of Take That, James Arthur and Rudimental, the latter of whom signed her to a new record deal with their label Major Toms/Asylum. For Ella, this marked a brand new start. “I want it to be fresh,” says the 23-year-old. “The industry's changed so drastically since I last released music over four years ago. I want to embrace that. I want to treat everything like it's a clean slate.” - Spotify Top 100 Chart History Ella Henderson 2014 01 Ghost -1- MILLIONAIRE 2014 07 Glow -2- 2014 16 Yours -3- 2015 96 Mirror Man -4- 2015 04 Glitterball (Sigma feat. As she tells Apple Music, “It had this innocent positivity that comes from real-life situations and sometimes a lot of pain—but going through that and being uplifted.” Born in 1981, the West Sussex native comes by that inspirational power honestly: Among her pre-fame pursuits was writing and singing for the London branch of the Hillsong contemporary-worship empire. But with its shimmering fusion of Alanis’ edgy alt-pop and Lauryn Hill’s empowering R&B, Bedingfield’s 2004 solo debut, Unwritten, refashioned her as secular crossover star, albeit one whose catwalk-ready swagger was undercut by a self-effacing relatability. On her first UK No. 1 hit, “These Words,” she demystifies her own songwriting process in a manner that suggests you should try it too, while the album's dew-sparkled titled track is a rapturous ode to tapping your inner creativity (a message that got somewhat clouded when it became the theme song to MTV’s posh-kid hate-watch The Hills). Bedingfield continued to radiate positivity throughout the decade, via upbeat funky bops like “I Wanna Have Your Babies” and 2008’s self-explanatory “Pocketful of Sunshine.” After taking an extended hiatus—marked by one-off collaborations, TV gigs, and new motherhood—Bedingfield resurfaced with 2019’s Linda Perry-produced Roll With Me, which saw the singer coloring her motivational stories with an expanded musical palette of Caribbean rhythms and old-school ‘60s soul. “When you write a hit song, you can easily get caught in a trap where you’re trying to write songs that everyone will like,” Bedingfield tells Apple Music. “But we’re all in our own lane and we all have to evolve and grow.” - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History 2004 03 Single -1- 2004 01 These Words -2- 2004 06 Unwritten -3- MILLIONAIRE 2005 12 I Bruise Easily -4- 2007 07 I Wanna Have Your Babies -1- 2007 07 Soulmate -2- 2008 20 Love Like This (feat. February 16, 20242 yr Author 13 | 12 | 14th week Dua Lipa Houdini 1st single from forthcoming studio album Released: 10th November 2023 Label: Dua Lipa Chart Statistics NE (23/11/2023) | 2-7-10-31-31-37-52-6-9-9-10-12-12-13 Sales: 200k+ Certification: Silver Status: Standard Chart Ratio 01 Sales 05 Audio Streaming 02 Video Streaming Video suAR1PYFNYA Biography There’s purpose in Dua Lipa’s euphoric pop. “For me, it’s about championing women and putting ourselves in the position of power,” the singer told Apple Music in 2020, ahead of the release of her second album, Future Nostalgia. “I have been inspired by the female alphas that have shown me that we can do it. And that we can wear the pants, you know? We need more of that in music.” Forcing the world to get a little more comfortable with female alphas has been a mission statement for Lipa (born in London to Kosovar Albanian parents in 1995) since her 2017 self-titled debut. It housed the triumphant breakup smash “New Rules”, the self-love anthem “IDGAF” and the assured “Hotter Than Hell”—songs which made it clear that this was no ingénue, but rather an outspoken, effortlessly cool face of pop’s future. Indeed, that status was cemented a year later when Lipa made history as the first female solo artist to receive five BRIT Award nominations. She won two and, in 2019, added two Grammys to her mantelpiece. Despite the success of her debut, Lipa wasn’t interested in recreating its hits. “People always say, ‘The second album is really scary,’ but for me, it’s more scary to go back into the studio and try to create something like ‘New Rules’ or ‘IDGAF’ over and over again,” she said. “I feel like I’d end up in a vicious cycle of trying to get somewhere but never being able to mature as an artist.” And so, to move forward, she pivoted to the past, drawing on disco and funk—and filtering it through her ahead-of-its-time pop—to arrive at Future Nostalgia. Decadent and every bit as empowering as those early hits, it brought Lipa her first Mercury Prize nod, multiple Grammy nominations and a rightful place in pop’s upper echelons. And with it, too, came Lipa’s new purpose. Released just as the world went into lockdown amid the coronavirus crisis, Future Nostalgia became an urgent tonic for tough times—danced to in living rooms across the world. Yet Lipa wasn’t done there: Five months later, she unveiled Club Future Nostalgia, a thrilling remixed version on which the singer teamed up with club queen The Blessed Madonna, and guests including Madonna, Missy Elliott, Gwen Stefani and Mark Ronson, to bring lockdown-fatigued listeners another dose of escapism. “I didn’t think I’d be putting albums out during a global pandemic,” added Lipa. “But it’s just about creating experiences for everyone at home. That’s the most important thing for me now.” All of this, of course, is only just the beginning. “I really feel like I’m finding my feet,” said Lipa. “I feel so proud of Future Nostalgia as a whole and the most confident and the most myself making it. But I’m already planning the next move.” - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History 2016 15 Hotter Than Hell -2- 2016 30 Blow Your Mind (Mwah) -3- 2016 10 No Lie (Sean Paul feat. February 16, 20242 yr I really thought Unwritten was a #1 song back in the day. It was so big when it was released. It was released at Christmas after the album which had already sold a lot though in fairness.

February 16, 20242 yr I was shocked when I found out that it never charted here. Was it not released as a single here or something? Yeah, they passed on releasing it here! :( I think they stupidly missed out on a potential top 5 hit.
February 16, 20242 yr Author I was shocked when I found out that it never charted here. Was it not released as a single here or something? Yeah that's right, it was released for the US edition of her second album (N.B. became Pocketful of Sunshine with only about half the tracklist remaining). Over here we only got Love Like This from that re-arranged album, not sure why they missed the chance for the title track! :( It later surfaced on download sites on her next album, Strip Me Away (titled Strip Me in the US). The Pocketful of Sunshine album is available here digitally now though! Unwritten is probably my fave Natasha song now but big shout out to These Days and Single, what an opening run!! That whole album is so great too. And I have a soft spot for I Wanna Have Your Babies x
