Posted March 25, 20241 yr I think it's clear artists are just becoming lazy now. Back in the day the video would help boost the song but nowadays there's really little added merit in having one. I do understand them not doing videos as they are expensive and bring little return most of time. Videos don’t need to be expensive to be good/memorable though. Just piggybacking off of a discussion I was reading in another thread, I thought it would be good to broadly ask if ones think that there is little reward in producing music videos to support singles anymore. How often do you search for a music video for a song you like with the intention of watching the video (as opposed to just playing the song in the background). Is it important to you that a music video is produced or is a lyric video sufficient nowadays? Also, for those who do make a music video, what are some key things you like to see in one? Is it a story being told in the background with some characters or is live footage from various large scale events as appealing? Do you like it when a creative animated music video is produced? Interested to hear what ones think on this matter.
March 25, 20241 yr I think music videos are always useful in connecting a song to the public regardless of whether they are as profitable as they once were (MTV, YouTube heydays). I find it very lazy of artists who don't bother to create at least some kind of visual for their singles.
March 25, 20241 yr They def have reduced in importance. Some real good videos barely get traction on YouTube whereas plain audio of a song on YouTube often does just as well. Nevertheless I still think artists should make them for whatever reason
March 25, 20241 yr It's a form of art, if an artist makes it just to support a song, thry might as well skip it.
March 25, 20241 yr Music videos are absolutely needed, plus me and my partner watch them like it's sport on the weekend.
March 25, 20241 yr I don't think I've watched one fully in years tbh. Jungle's 'Back on 74' was only a hit last year after the music video went viral on TikTok, so they can still have some impact - nowhere near as 10+ years ago though.
March 25, 20241 yr Definitely nowhere near as important as they used to be. I don't go out of my way to watch music videos now but I still remember all the classics from back in the day e.g. Gaga & Beyonce's 'Telephone' springs to mind. Used to enjoy sometimes just switching on MTV or those channels that used to be dedicated to music videos!
March 25, 20241 yr Well if they're not making any money and since there's financial costs involved then I'm saying not needed. Rarely do I find a music video essential nowadays.
March 25, 20241 yr It's totally important when the song is fighting for a big chart. Take an example Bling-Bang-Bang-Born by Creepy Nuts, one of the biggest worldwide Spotify song 3 months ago, peaking at #52 in Daily Spotify Worldwide Chart and making a brief appearance on iTunes UK Top 100, without any visualizers/Lyric Video/MV from Creepy Nuts. The song is now in decline, and they decided to upload 2 lyric videos, so they gotta expect less. Another example would be Peggy Gou. Had she published an MV earlier, I think she would've gotten a shot for Top 3.
March 25, 20241 yr Music videos also help when promoting on TV shows. Most TV shows don't have performance slots but will play a 30 second clip before chatting to an artist.
March 25, 20241 yr Music Video views on YouTube have nose dived since 2020, for example the Ariana Grande ‘thank you, next’ video got 55.4 million views in 24 hours in 2019, Ariana’s latest lead single ‘yes, and’ has 55 million views after 2 months. The drop off in views does seem to coincide with the launch of TikTok. However, if you look at Ariana’s latest single ‘we can’t be friends’ it’s the music video that made the song go viral and propelled it after a luke warm debut on Spotify. So music videos do still have impact. It’s easier for more established artists who have a fanbase that will always watch the videos. It’s clear music video budgets have been cut (just look at Dua’s latest videos as an example of this). I think in a few years it will become common that only a lead single will get a music video and the rest will be on a case by case basis.
March 25, 20241 yr I think its a pity nobody is doing videos like michael Jackson used to or Gaga Beyonce hasnt even bothered lately The drop in views sure is tiktok related but also the ads that make watching Yt views quite tedious But hope artists dont give up, love watching videos especially if theres a storyline or plot twist The @1 on Youtube uk gets like 150,000 views daily so people dont really care
March 25, 20241 yr I think with streaming I general , music videos are becoming less relevant to a song doing well Take Taylor swift for example LWYMMD accumulated 1 billion views between August 2017 and December 2018 Antihero hasn't even hit 200m since October 2022, Of the 2 AH is arguably the much bigger of the 2
March 25, 20241 yr Another reason why TikTok needs to die then. :kink: I never thought music videos would die out this quickly. :(
March 25, 20241 yr What are the biggest songs not to have an official music video? Cruel Summer?
March 25, 20241 yr What are the biggest songs not to have an official music video? One Dance surely
March 25, 20241 yr Yeah One Dance easily. Other top 10 hits that sprang to mind: Lady Gaga - Do What U Want Usher - I Don't Mind
March 25, 20241 yr Another reason why TikTok needs to die then. :kink: I never thought music videos would die out this quickly. :( Well TikTok is getting banned in the USA and probably UK won't follow on too far behind....
